Skyrim open ended?

Post » Sat Sep 10, 2011 10:59 am

I was wondering whether there could be multiple endings for the skyrim main quest line. Oblivion was completely close ended, F3 was semi open ended and FNV was very open ended which will it be.

There will most likely be one ending, as it should be. It makes more sense for a series with continuous lore. Daggerfall's "Dragon Break" was kind of cool, but shouldn't happen again.

They have already confirmed that it has 1 ending, the lore would be wack if it didn't.

^ This.

If the lore from game to game is going to be contiguous, then they need a definitive ending. It's really the only way to keep the world flowing smoothly.

But... there is no need for the world to keep flowing smoothly... there are ways to "undo" some PC actions... such as with a timeskip: The PC's actions lead to an era of prosperity for some time, and then it goes back to the status quo.

Game-play experience > Inter-game continuity. Let the devs resolve any inconsistencies that arise when they want to make a sequel... Apparently, despite Daggerfall's extremely open-ended storyline, it's sequel is "The Greatest Elder Scrolls Game of All Time"

After all, was or wasn't the Imperial City flooded with over a million watermelons at the end of the third Era?

as if having multiple endings but maintaining a single canon ending established by literally a Beth blog-post, press release, written in an accompanying book/comic, or even quoted by the lead developer is going to shatter the Lore.

move on.

This is the Elder Scrolls we are talking about, if it had multiple endings we may as well chuck the lore they have worked hard on in the Recycling bin

This is your opinion not everyone's for an example to this, I think that Oblivion is the best Elder Scrolls Game but again that is my opinion. Not fact :poke:

It'll be closed.

The idea of the devs having to use a Dragonbreak to explain the endings to each game isn't appealing.
It was cool the first time, but it would get old (and really confusing) multiple times.

While it is the culmination of everything there should only be one major ending, but I still hope there are details that may vary depending on your choices. These details won't be written about in future installations' in-game books anyway.

You mean the lore that is different for every single player?

I've always envisioned TES to be a series that puts the player's experience and wishes above its own pretentions... Mods are canon for the people who use them.

Tamriel and Nirn are just scribblings on an old piece of paper anyway... anyone can write or read what they want off them

Can't you join the rebels or the empire, though?Whichever one you choose has no affect on the ending? How's that work?

But it is because of protecting this continuity that the protagonist of each game disappears after every game and there is a period of time between games. They do this to set the depth and scope of each chapter of the series.

If they left it open-ended, with all of those variables, then you'd be reading Lore in a future game about your past protagonist and his/her actions and pointing out the discrepancies as in "But my character didn't do that... He/She did this other thing instead. Why didn't they choose the ending that I played through?"

It's much better to have a fixed, closed ending.

I'd appreciate multiple endings to the MQ. It would make starting TES VI unique and dependant upon how TES V ended. This would be Golden if they take a que from the way Mass Effect did it.

Funny, when I think 'open ended' I tend to define it in terms of play after the main quest, so to me Oblivion was the open ended game and New Vegas had the hard (closed) ending because it was over when it was over.
