I quit reading after he made an assumption on what the combat would be like based on what other people said instead of playing it

He mentioned that the graphics look terrible on consoles. They have ONLY shown us the console version and it looks spectacular. In fact, most of the comments that I've read from people is that they couldn't believe it was running on current gen.

Sounds like someone's getting out of his pram because he was only given 10 mins of playtime when most of the other journo's had way longer.

Oh well, never mind. :banghead:

I think it's because they give actual journalists more hands-on time. This kid was clearly just attending the expo with the press passes that anyone with a website can get.

Graphics are "horrible"? What? Not a single other preview has said that. Some have mentioned some low res textures, but that it still looks very good overall. But to flat out say it's "horrible"? What?

Game "journalism" as a whole is a joke.

Personally, it sounds like his mind was made up well before Skyrim was announced, which I guess I can't fault, since my mind was made up too!

Still though, it's hard to really take anyone seriously when they say "Move backwards and swing", in not so harsh words, isn't that just "Dodge and attack"?

Moving backwards will be slow and make you fall over it was alpha build or beta or whatever idk

I left a comment on his writing style, or lack thereof. Just because someone has access to a computer does NOT make them qualified to write editorials. I'm sick of companies hiring people like this when there are thousands of people with actual writing talent who would love to do this instead.

This.

Every-time I re-watch the Todd Howard play through on 360 I go "oooo... ahhh" then I read completely opposite reviews on graphics.

Most people: Looks AMAZING on console.

PC Elitists: Looks AWFUL on console.

Not worried about graphics for console for those of us who aren't complete graphics hores.

I don't know anything about this guy or if he has some kind of vendetta against TES, but I won't begrudge him his opinion. I've played Skyrim for exactly zero minutes, he's spent 10 minutes playing it. I tend to believe him that combat hasn't changed much since Oblivion - I don't remember reading any previews that said how new and revolutionary it was.

I'm sure the added dimension of dual-wielding and flamethrower attacks helps, but I would bet aside from that combat isn't the best it could be.

I've read many pro combat articles. Would you like a link?

He's 19 and not a proper journalist.
Of course Bethesda/Zenimax wouldn't bribe him.

Well, I'm not a graphics snob, but I definitely agree with some of the more critical points against Skyrims Graphics that are founded on the actual meaning of the word Graphics. The Rendering technology of Skyrim is of average quality, but incredibly powerful in quanitity (Able to render everything in the world and stream details in as needed is something few engines can do). But this Quantity at the cost of quality does show.

That said, the Strength of the art far surpasses those weaknesses. Skyrim is an amazing looking game, but it's technology is rather unimpressive if we're dealing with the cold-hard facts. If you can't appriciate the art, then Skyrim probably does look terrible, and I'm sure the same is true with Fallout 3 and even Bioshock.

So have I and most commented how natural it felt, such as the warhammer feeling like it had weight when it hit an NPC.

No. No offense but 19 is not old enough to do the job well. The reason I say this is because it takes years of college to become a journalist. You don't just grab a keyboard and jump online and say you are a journalist. So no offense but no.

edit: I would like to also iterate that I myself do not qualify. I may be very intelligent and articulate but I have not had the college education to do it either. I would love to be a video game journalist though.

I'd be so bold as to declare he's trying to pull a "Me against the world" Troll as well. Since the press is so overwhelmingly stacked on one side in Favor of Skyrim's play. It's a tactic a lot of "Up and coming" bloggers/amateur writers use to gain more hits, and thus more attention from talent prospectors. If I remember correctly, that's how Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw got picked up by the escapist. Vehemently bashing one of the single-most acclaimed Xbox games. Granted, he actually has talent as a writer.

:P I enjoy listening to that guy. I'm looking forward to his SK review.

Anyway, this article is meh. Nothing new. Just some guy talking about a game without really saying anything.

I'm not trying to being combative or difficult, I just said I didn't remember any previews saying it was way better than Oblivion. Then again, I have almost no short-term memory, so someone might have said it was amazingly better. I'll take a link, but because I'd like to read up on it, not because I doubt your sources.

This guy is so logical and i agree 100%, here is my review. :shakehead:

Review of a Guy who Reviewed a Game that he played for 10 minutes:
Spoiler
Today i read a review of a guy who was a complete fail at life. This guy claimed to be a journalist, but judged a game harshly even tho he never got to really play it. He believes Skyrim should be like every game out there, a lock on skill spamming crap load. In fact he is wrong, as the combat is distinct and appreciated. I don't want another Dragon Age combat style that many games use, its pointless and utterly boring. I like have complete control of my character (Heck imagine combat for the Wii, Kinect, or Move) these aspects are what make the combat. Whats more important than the combat tho, is the story and AI.

The Story and AI have always been a strong suit in every RPG game Bethesda has made. Now we are getting off track, lets just say don't read the Nerdiest Review, he is a PC enthusiast that thinks every game should be the same, that not a single game should have uniqueness. He played 10 min (So he Claims) and suddenly cause all he fought was a chicken so that sooo shows the game play, he judged the game poorly.

I say the only way you can come out with any judging is if you at least play 20 min, but to be really taken seriously a review needs to be from 5-10 hours of game play.

I think it read more like the very personal (and quick) notes on the guy's short experience at Eurogamer.

He clearly stated that what negative stuff he mentioned were mere doubts and fears, and that he couldn't really tell if those were justified, since he got so little time; not once did I read anything remotely resembling "bashing Skyrim". Time and again he explicitly states that he can't make any final judgement because of the time he had at the expo and, concerning combat, he only watched and not experienced for himself.

The only thing that might get some people's knickers in a twist is his remark about how Skyrim's ambitious graphics took a lot of effort to make functional on a console.
Nothing more that I can find. And it certainly wasn't "illegible" :S

Isn't all this rather explosive hate simply because people get a bit touchy, just because it's not a glowing preview full of skygasms and rambling superlatives? Not trying to start anything here, just wondering...

I dont really have much comment to him....
He doesnt talk about those three little "nigglings" that he had doubt about ( i think combat was one of them though) and just persists that he fears that he is right.

Nigglings? That can't be politically correct..

Yeah, I like Jim Sterling too, though that's mostly because he loops "Jesters of the Moon" during this bits on The Escapist.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if Yahtzee enjoys Skyrim, though (legitimately) bashes Oblivion for "Trying too hard", if you read the Post-credits, he apparently enjoyed Morrowind a great deal. I get that vibe from Skyrim now, that instead of trying so hard to "push the envelope" they're simply creating a brilliant game world that's fun to inhabit.
