Skyrim on PSP2

Yeah, if they can fit the necessary hardware into a tiny case, power it with a tiny little battery, and output little enough heat to not be a hazard, I'll eat my hat.

Well, that's evolving technology I guess. That guy who made IBM was pretty shocked that there were more than 5 computers in the world I bet.

No, technology can evolve all you like, 5 years is not long enough to power that sort of thing with a small rechargeable battery and produce almost no heat. Maybe you could fit it in the case, but you're not getting it to run without external help.

I say again: Bring me specs, and proof it will not melt my hands, and I will eat my hat. Until then, I wear it and say "No."

Well, I guess we'll just have to wait. I doubt they would release it if it were hot enough to cause a hazard though.

First listed spec is the processor (weaker than the PS3), and none of the other specs tell me anything about how powerful it is. My hat remains glued, sir.

But it's not going to output 1080p, the resolution will be much smaller. And I repeat, it already ran a PS3 game.

The resolution is pretty impressive, actually, I was surprised at that. As for the latter argument, the PS3 can play a game that's also playable on a $10,000 PC, does that mean the PS3 is as powerful? Uncharted isn't particularly technically impressive.

And neither is Skyrim and that is what we are talking about here, lest we forget. If the PSP2 can run Uncharted then the chances are good it can run Skyrim if not at a slightly lower setting.

You can't say it's weaker, PS3's processor was powerful 5 years ago, but it was 5 years ago, so the quad-core Cortex-A9 (the most powerful ARM tech btw) might be even more powerful (at least for native resolution)

So maybe you don't have to eat your hat now, but you definitely have to be prepared to eat it in the closest future

Low, really. While I have yet to see any decent specs it seems highly unlikely to me that the PSP2 will have more or greater RAM than the PS3, and RAM is the major limiting factor here. Perhaps a stripped down version, but if we're going to strip down an open-world RPG what's left?

@Vokun; True, I really don't know enough about either architecture to make that call, but I can guess from the power draw.

Yes, Uncharted may not be as impressive as games like Crysis that can be run on higher end PC hardware, but it pushes the limits of PS3 more than most games, and I doubt Skyrim will push them more. Naughty Dog chose the PS3 for making the games because the PS3 was the most pwoerful console available and they wouldn't be able to do it on 360 (from interview with game disk) and since Skyrim is also on 360, they should probably be able to run it.

@Phyoshi - RAM isn't hard to come by these days. Why would it really be any difficulty to get more of it than the PS3? The average computer has 4GB or so.

But it's still a PS3 game :D.

The PSP2 isn't trying to beat the PS3, just match it.

Well, what I meant was that you don't need all the power of something to run something that doesn't use all the power of it.

I know, but you still need the minimum power, which the PSP2 clearly has.

Sure, it's clearly significantly more powerful than the first one and people should be able to do nifty things with it.

There were rumours of the specs for PSP2 before it was revealed all the other specs were correct so it goes to reason that they would be right about the memory as well. In that case it has 512MB with 128MB dedicated VRAM.

It doesn't use a hard drive. It uses memory cards. As for a fan, I guess it's just better technology since it WAS made about 5 years later. Technology just evolves. At the time I guess the space was probably needed. The PSP is about as powerful as PS2 but it was made later and is much smaller.

I doubt you can have something that powerful without some way to cool it.

I know, I was just saying that because of the evolving technology they probably would have a very compact cooling system.

But active cooling systems require power, and that's the major limiting factor here. Powerful technology is power hungry.

It's not actually called the PSP2 yet, the going name so far is NGP (Next Generation Portable). That being said, the specs are out, and I hear it's comparable in performance to the PS3. Skyrim will be for th PS3. It'd be interesting, to say the least, if Skyrim was for a portable system.

But it will be using small flash memory to store its games. I doubt that Skyrim would be able to fit on it, much less some of the other games for PS3 that require BluRay disks just to fit them.

When the whole thing was in rumour overdrive a few months ago a software dev said they were desperately trying to get the cooling sorted before they could show it. So it was clearly an issue.

You can fit as much information on flash as you can on blu-rays. And with all the games being released on flash it will also drive the price of whatever format they choose down.

Edit: Indeed you can fit a lot more onto flash than blu-rays;

Never mind the fact the games won't be that big, but it just proves the memory isn't limited.

Depending on how much time/money is involved in a project, many things are able to be ported and scaled down quite a great deal. Given what I have seen of the PSP 2 or NGP whatever anyone wants to call it. With what little I know of Skyrim, as Bethesda has shown.. I would say it probably could be scaled back and ported over. (Then again know almost nothing of Skyrim, as we have been shown almost squat when it comes to it's technology. One can kinda assume though given they are limited by current consoles hardware)

The true problem here is cost. From my understanding Sony is really striving to try and provide certain tool sets to help with porting, but it really comes down to money. A great deal of visuals can be replicated in many different forms, some cheaper and easier to render than others. The thing is how much man power are you going to invest to reproduce certain visuals on a select platform vs sales. I have no doubt from what I have seen that many visuals from most modern games could probably be reproduced on the psp2. The real question is how hard is it going to be to do it. If you have to dedicate a great deal of man power to rebuilding everything for it, then it's going to drive up costs.

I personally would kill to have a portable Elder Scrolls on a system with actual buttons and controls. I can say I will be buying the pc version day one, and would also buy a portable version. The thing is would they sell enough copies to justify the expenses of doing it? I would love such a thing, but I'm not holding my breath for it.

Then I guess they'll just have to make some powerful batteries then.
