Skyrim Races- Do they matter?

Post » Wed Jun 05, 2013 7:59 pm

I wonder why people act like the differences between the races was so much more relevant in previous games. The only lasting differences were the same as they are now; the racial abilities and powers. I wouldn't mind if they expanded upon them a little bit though.

People in previous games did actually react to what race you were in passing comments. Notably, in Oblivion, you had disposition modifiers based on your race.

Plus, "greetings, fellow Breton!" and "what do you want, Breton trash?"

No need to be facetious. Race has absolutely no real bearing outside of the personal domain.

You don't have to take my word for it. Read over the thread. That way I can stop quoting from three posts up.

Although that has been possible since Arena. In TES games, your race choice usually affected only the first few hours of the game. As you grew stronger it became increasingly irrelevant what race or class you were.

I wasn't kidding, it was a mistake I must of misread your post as 'vote' wasn't clear to me. I have read what everybody has posted and I disagree with most of them. The question was Skyrim races- do they matter? I think they do. I think they matter a lot for several reasons including race bonuses. I only read your responses to me as I was replying to someone with differing viewpoints as mine- UnrivaledAssault. You chimed in with your opinion and so I thought you would respond your opinions to me and not to other people. This only happened because I'm busy doing something else. Sorry for the confusion.

Well if you are a beast race, you do not get much respect, but each race has it's own skill.

I don't think they matter any more or less than they did in other Elder Scrolls games.

Elder Scrolls has never been about race / skill / class restrictions.

I have to completely disagree with this.

The difference in races due to Attributes was minimal at best, and overcome within a matter of a few levels.

Hell, in some cases, it was overcome in a matter of minutes.

A Bosmer could equal a Breton in Intelligence by simply selected Intelligence as a preferred Attribute (+10), and getting Mentor's Ring (+10 Intelligence).

The Attribute differences were so negligible, that like Skyrim, the racial differences only impact the early game.

Being the one that your little discussion originally spawned from, I'll say this.

Refer to Cinco's points (Good stuff by the way Cinco). They will pretty much mirror mine. If you really want me to say it, I will.

1.) Five levels is hardly a reason to choose a race if you ask me. Late game I'd much rather have a character I connect with, than say "Remember how much that +50 Magicka helped for the first 5 levels?".

2.) Indeed, that is exactly what it means. However, like before this is hardly a reason for race to matter. I'll disagree on the part about compensating is boring. It really doesn't take much time.

3.) This is the one instance my answer will differ a lot from Cinco's. Well, by about 5 levels. It completely stops mattering to me at about level 10. But then again, Cinco is more experienced.

4.) Yeah, I just clumped them together as passive race powers.

I think they only matter if their particlar racial ability will be useful to you in the specific build you are going for. Other than that, I dont think it matters.

If building a mage, maybe the Altmer racial ability would play into a person choosing them, or, a person could very well choose and Orc for a "pure mage" build and use their berserker rage ability for those times when they run out of magica and need to melee. It really just depends on the build you are going for.

Races do matter, not only do they form the based of your build but it is also essential to RPing.

I think race only really becomes a major factor if you're Rping.

Not unless you play Altmer as they start with +50 Magika, has quite an effect on the game

If you go to the options, there's a setting to take the difficulty off of Novice. Just saying...

If he doesn't know how to change the difficulty, which I'm sure he does, wouldn't it be on adept?

While your professionalism is duly note, it does beg the question... What does that have to do with what I posted?

I believe he is referring to you saying your race selection doesn't affect you past level 5. They think that is only because you aren't on a high enough difficulty.

Hopefully that makes sense. It does in my head.

The previous member stated that the skill difference becomes obsolete around level 30. I noted that that difference is made up after 5 levels of gameplay. ( technically closer to level 7 )

Difficulty has nothing to do with that.

Oh, I wasn't really arguing. I was just clarifying, although it seems I misread your post.

I took it as "What do you mean?" instead of "What does that matter?".

You and I are basically on the same page as far as this topic is concerned.

No, in game, it doesn't matter. Some nord might call you elf and you are able to go into an orc stronghold. And the party. It's not really noticeable. Personally I think that each race should have a specific dialogue choice that would match the chosen race. Like if I make a khajiit there should be an option to say most of his lines in 3rd person.
