Is Skyrim really better than oblivion?

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 10:05 pm

Far better. Oblivion was tons of fun, and Skyrim is too - but now I don't worry about leveling properly and I don't get frustrated with the combat system. I like the grittier Nordic style. I appreciate the streamlining, probably more than most people, possibly to the point of fanboyism - I am glad that acrobatics/athletics/attributes are gone. The issues I have with Skyrim? Crafting can be abused, and I've heard that the guild quests go by very quickly, but I haven't even gotten to the guilds much yet.

I like killing dragons more than closing Oblivion gates. Quicker, occasionally challenging (depending on dragon type and terrain), and more satisfying.

Not sure why, since a lot of people regard Oblivion as having a very ungenerous difficulty curve as well, but I never would just walk through the forest and die in Oblivion. In Skyrim (as well as the Fallouts), I did/do...

I don't think anyone in their right mind is going to say vanilla Oblivion is better then Skyrim. XD Vanilla Oblivion was so disappointing to me I lost interest in 2 months, where as Morrowind I played 4 years straight. Skyrim is a fantastic game so far, despite some of the questlines being a little too short for my tastes.

Even though I always played a mage in Oblivon and loved it, and the magic system has taken a lot of hits here (Enchanting is a magical art; not a craft and it's been gutted; I've lost spells I loved, etc) Skyrim is still better in so many ways. It's a fuller, richer environment than Oblivion ever was. And although I've heard a lot of complaining about the guilds in Oblivion being so much more, I always thought they were primarily a bunch of fetch quests and I was never all that enamored with them. My first introduction to the Mages University here was stellar; I love that series of scenes and it won my heart. I would say the MQ is just as lackluster as the one there, although I loved Jauffre and miss him and loved hating on Martin. There were more characters that I took notice of in Oblivion, and I found fewer here to like so far, but I've played hundreds of hours of Oblivion and only 25 or so hours of Skyrim. I'm also very happy to have a proper follower in the game with me. He can use some improvement, but it's so much better than always being alone, and he has idle pvssyr and can be given some instructions.

Oh, and the races! The orcs, khajit and argonians are so much better done and not cartoonish. And the elves too, imo. And the voice acting is better, although not enough Wes Johnson yet, although I've run into him once so far. But it's turning into a stellar Beth romp for me. I see a lot of replayability.

This is not funny. Skyrim tops all. Still has flaws, but what game is going to be perfect. Mostly when it's been out little more than a week. Patches will fix rough spots.

Oblivion with mods like FCOM, is best TES game.

If you are on pc, i bet u never tried FCOM.

Oblivion got brilliant graphics, Oblivion got brilliant lore, jokes, story, npcs, quests.

Oblivion got alot haters in Morrowind and Skyrim forums.

Oblivion got thousand of brilliant mods like MMM,OOO,FCOM.

Oblivion impressed me more then any book or movie ever will...

I'm not going to consider the modded game. And I won't; even though I'm a modder. The mods don't mean much to me in this comparison because modders aren't the original creators of the game. We just add to it.

So: comparing vanilla to vanilla.

I think Skyrim has a lot going for it that Oblivion neglected and not because I'm in the Skyrim forum, but because I think Beth learned a lot from what they did wrong in Oblivion and what they did right in FO3.

Skyrim is the best Elder Scrolls game since Morrowind in my opinion, Oblivion was a watered down filler game.

bout 10-12 hours onteh clock and I cant tell I vastly prefer Skyrim.

One point I really, really like : Skyrim gets back to the genuinely filled bookshelves that were present in Morrowind, where Oblivion had what felt like purely decorative 'meters of books' ones. (shelves filled with multiple of the same books - so it looks like the imrpresive library of a man of taste while in fact it's a decor with about three different - nad basic - books in it).

Skyrim is the best Elder Scrolls game right up there with Morrowind. Sure it has a few flaws but its high points certainly make up for that.

Skyrim as an extremely detailed world unmatched in terms of how immersive the wilderness is. It is truly a living breathing world.

Yes vanilla Skyrim is a lot better than vanilla Oblivion any day. I cannot wait to see the epic mods that are created for this game...

Yes, and it's not close.

Oblivion was my 2nd favorite game of all time. With the release of Skyrim, Oblivion is now #3.

Skyrim is much more better than Oblivion. I love Morrowind, but Oblivion don't make great effect to me. And Skyrim is wonderful, at the level of Morrowind.
I again believe in Bethesda ability to create worlds, in which you can live.

(IMHO, when comparing vanillas w/most up-to-date patch...)

1. TES V - Skyrim, 9/10
2. TES III - Morrowind, 9/10
3. TES II - Daggerfall, 8/10
4. TES IV - Oblivion, 7/10

5. TES I - Arena (I've never played Arena) ?/10

I loved Oblivion to bits and played up until the release of Skyrim, but yes, I too feel Skyrim is much better in practically every way.
I never played Arena, but Daggerfall was disappointing to me back in the day. I bought it, excited by the idea of a wide open fantasy world to explore, only to find that the world consisted only of ugly towns and dungeons. Morrowind was a lot better for me but I still couldn't really get into it... It felt cold and distant and I hated the conversation system. Felt like I was reading a Wikipedia page instead of talking to a person. Oblivion was the first Elder Scrolls game I really fell in love with. As I'm into audio drama, voice acting makes a world of difference to me, even if it's the same voices over and over again.
Skyrim fixes Oblivion's faults and adds more personality to the world, much more content, more diversity and more atmosphere. I couldn't be happier.

Well, I've played Oblivion for like 15/20 hours, then I deleted.

So far I got 70 hours in Skyrim. To each its own I guess.

Skyrim is a five year old game. It has to run on the same hardware Oblivion ran on.
FIVE YEARS. To say its better than Oblivion is truth, but to say it delivers five year worth of better is nonsense.
Skyrim is just an official Oblivion mod. A good one. But the core gameplay and technical limitations are the same old pudding.

We urgently need new hardware, only then will TES actually discernably improve.
