Is Skyrim really better than oblivion?

I sort of think it is. Even with it's faults.

In Vanilla form? Absolutely. I'm loving it so far. I'm currently playing on PS3, but I've modded Oblivion on the PC. It can become astounding. There's definitely things I miss from that. Given enough time with the Creation Kit I'm sure Skyrim will become even more fantastic than a modded Oblivion.

Depends on if you consider a heavily-modded Oblivion or just vanila. I am going back to my Obivion game with 255+ mods after I finish Skyrim's main quest. I'll come back to Skyrim when they bring the Creation Kit out.

I love Oblivion so it would be difficult for me to say anything to diminish it in any way. I think Skyrim has made huge advances in all aspects but that's to be expected 6-8 years after Oblivion was being developed. With a much larger team developing Skyrim, it has everything going for it in more creativity too. It just has more of everything good about TES.. :)

Yes, Skyrim is better than Oblivion. Of course, this is my opinion.

I still love Oblivion, though.

Not sure if serious.

Massively improved, I liked Oblivion but honestly the level scaling was so broken it took the fun out of any playthrough. You levelled down not up, it was just dumb. I'm having a great time playing a role in Skyrim, regardless of haters this is personally one of the engrossing games I have ever played. I'm level 30 and I have only been to the holds of White Run, Markarth and Windhelm. I don't fast travel and I explore and do quests that are relevant to my character. There will be much, for me personally, to replay for.

Value for money this game is brilliant.

I'm not a fan of the new spell system. That's a pretty big deal for me, too, since all of my main characters were spell users in Morrowind and Oblivion. It's very difficult to be a decent hybrid in Skyrim since the magic system revolves entirely around gear after a certain point. The interface, too...luckily that's a big problem for a lot of folks and we're already seeing mod fixes for Bethesda's mistakes there.

Vanilla for vanilla, yeah, I'd probably take Skyrim right now. Like a user said up top, though, after I finish up with Skyrim I'll still be playing my modded Oblivion until the scene for Skyrim is healthy enough.

It just seems different as opposed to being better, to me. That's probably the best way I can put it.

If they hadn't changed the leveling system, then for me Skyrim would be better, as it is with the disappointments i have over the new game, no, it's not better for me.

Gah, my toon is level 25 and the list of things I've done is absolutely dwarfed by the list of things I haven't done.

This game mops the floor with Oblivion, even though many elements have been simplified. Sometimes less is more.

in my opinion even with the bad decisions like removing hand to hand as a skill and the glitches i think skyrim is the best game in the series.

Well, firstly, define "better"

Then well, you have to compare "vanilla' OB to 'vanilla' Skyrim. Because uh...the game developer doesn't sell the modded version

Another thing I'm not sold on and will surely be changed with mods is the perk system. Skills like Lockpicking have entire trees dedicated to them, but you can never take a single perk in the tree at all and still open master locks. There's a lot of examples like that amongst the skills. Speechcraft is another one that's basically worthless since it's almost entirely about making money (which isn't hard to do anyway).

Magic users, for instance, aren't taking perks out of choice but out of necessity. The entire point of this system was to give users a choice in what they take and that really isn't the case with all of the magic trees (providing you're a heavy magic user).

That depends on whether you are talking about during the time they released, or comparing them now.

Say F22 raptor are definitely better than B17 flying fortresses. But the usefulness of F22 nowadays is probably much less than that of the B17 back in the days of WW2.

Same goes for oblivion and skyrim.
Skyrim is definitely better than oblivion at this moment.
But in 2006 I would say oblivion is the best. While in 2011 talking about skyrim I would only say it is one of the best.

I liked Oblivion and actually preferred it to Morrowind, but yes - Skyrim is superior in every way.

At least to me.

It does what Oblivion does, but does it better ( except combat ). And it loses points for no attributes, or are they hidden attributes?

In my opinion, Skyrim is the much better game, at least compared to Oblivion without mods. When Oblivion was released, I put it on the shelf after a few hours. Skyrim I have now played 35 hours and there's still no sign of waning interest. The scaling is still not perfect, but much improved to Oblivion which was, in that regard, nearly unplayable for me without mods. The whole "feel" of Skyrim is vastly improved for me,

And for the first time, Khajiits look the way I always imagined them. :)

You're losing me on both comparisons...the F-22 is not a ten crewman strategic bomber and the B-17 hauled 8,000 lbs of bombs to the F-22's 2,000 lbs, and in 2006, Skyrim didn't exist so it's hard for me to rationalize how much better or worse Skyrim would have been compared to Oblivion had it been made 5 years ago.

My head hurts

If they had F22 Raptors in WW2, they would indeed be of far greater use; assuming they also had the same weapons technology.

Smart missiles, heat-seeking rockets, etc... It would have left much more of Europe in-tact as well as had a tremendous advantage in dog fights. :P

I sort of think it is. Even with it's faults.

Things it does right:
Lock Picking
Varied Dungeons

Things it doesn’t do right:
Level scaling
Dragons
Talking Dragons
Dialogue
Melee Combat
Magic
Main Quest
Vampires
Smiting
Levelling
User Interference
Snow
Armour Variety
Children
Perks
Dragon Shouts (Debateble)
Stealth
Opening
Writing
Boss Battles
Enchanting
Animations
Archery
Finishing Moves

...All I can think of on the spot, and yet its still an enjoyable game.
