Skyrim region block in Russia (Steam)

Post » Tue Sep 20, 2011 3:11 am

It's probably a matter of they don't want 10,000 idiots ordering the English version by accident and then wanting to return it for a Russian version. It's doing damage control.

Steam games are automatically localized according to the Steam language setting regardless of the language version on the dvd, hence this shouldn't be an issue at all for anyone.

I'm sorry but where exactly do Bethesda policies state that I should use half-assed borderline illegal ways that can get my steam account banned to get the game because I don't live in the US of A?

Using a proxy server is easy and I don't know what's illegal about it. Your account would be no more likely to get banned than if you had someone in the US gift it to you, you could have been visiting the US at the time you bought it, Valve isn't going to know the difference. Hell, you could make a second Steam account just to buy the game and gift it to your main account, so it looks like someone in the US gifted it to you.

According to Steam regional policy using a proxy or getting the game through somebody else as a gift to bypass a region block can get your account in steam banned (Don't confuse with VAC ban which only stops you from playing on Valve Anti Cheat protected servers), which means all games you have on it are lost. I have 70 on mine. I'd rather not try my luck.

There is a steam group called http://steamcommunity.com/groups/restofworld that petitions to cancel this regional B.S. But they only have 12k members while, for example, Counter-Strike group has more than 300.000.

What if you changed you IP address to an "American" one? There is such a program that will do so for you, and people do it who can't watch American vids in Germany, and other places where it is restriced. I dunno. That's an option. Maybe then Steam would let you buy it.

I know, but I'd rather not do that. It can get my steam account banned, see above.

I figured. I am NOT a PC gamer, and know nothing about Steam, only some basic networking stuff. So I'm guessing, you change, buy and download, then change back. No harm done?

Lack of evidence that this is safe and sound is a problem. I don't like the 50/50 odds of getting Skyrim or losing $850 USD worth of games.

If you knew someone from the states "in real life" or on any forum well enough, you could ask them to make you an account, then you have a Made in the U.S.A. Steam account, just change the password to something strong.

Then buy it off of Amazon and install to your Made in the U.S.A. Steam account.

1. Steam account sharing is illegal.
2. It doesn't matter where account was created, it's where it's signed in from, that's the point of having region protection: if your IP does not belong to a certain region database of adresses you can't play games restricted to that region. http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/3505/steamregionallimitation.png is an example.

Fly to America and buy the game.

Or he could just take a train to their neighbor...here to Finland. We use English versions in games.

But Steam likely still changes his version to his local version...Or bans his account for using wrong version or something...

It svcks if the only legal version you can get is a dumb localized version...Stupid things like this increase piracy.

A train ticket from Irkutsk to Saint-Petersburg costs 8k rubles, which is $260 USD + another ticket to get to Helsinki.

1-It's not sharing, he's making your account. It's like when I make an email account for PC illiterate relatives. [Edit, I have made Steam accounts for PC illiterate relatives too actually, then I gifted them some games]

2-Proxy wouldn't get around this? From a brief browsing of google results it seems like there is some workarounds.

As I said, why should I bother with this half-assed Rube Goldberg style solution that violates EULA that can cost me $800 when I'm supposed to get the same treatment as any other user?

you should tweet Pete Hines about that or just keep sending Steam support tickets until they reply back.

I am not funny. Skyrim buy you!

But on a more serious side-note, you should tweet Pete Hines about that.

I kind of felt bad for this guy right up until he started brushing off the help people went out of their way to give him. I'm glad you aren't getting Skyrim since you can't even at least thank people who have tried helping you and give them sarcasm in return. Maybe you should learn the age old life lesson of: Life svcks so be a man and svck it up.

OH MY GOD! I wear ushanka, drink vodka from samovar, eat caviar, play balalaika, paint khohloma, ride a T-34-76 to work and walk my bear on unicycle on a regular basis.

Can we be more on-topic from now on?

None of the solutions were acceptable, I can't go to another country, I can't risk getting banned in steam for bypassing regional block and I don't want to resort to other means of getting the game. I'm still waiting for a reply from mods.

Have you ever tried saying that in a different, less whiny tone maybe "thanks for the help but {insert here is why i can't use your advice]" instead of being a little baby and just giving people who are ONLY TRYING TO HELP sarcasm. Do all people in Russia act like this or is it only you? If it were me in your shoes I'd try to find an online shop that doesn't care what region you are from.

Why not just make a new account under another name that only has that game on it (figure if you are using a proxy server you might as well also use another E-mail address and new Steam account ) -- that way if they do ban it all you lose is that one game and all your others are still intact.
