Skyrim Remaster... Not just a reboot please.

Post » Mon Jun 20, 2016 1:43 am

While I'm glad to be able to play Skyrim with a new coat of paint and with the introduction of console mods im more excited than ever to play. Still, I'm hoping that's not all Bethesda is planning on adding.

I really want to see some new official content for Skyrim. Even if its just some new armour/weapon sets, some gameplay tweaks or even a few small side questlines. I don't want to see Bethesda use the game as an advantage to sell Skyrims non-profit-making modding community to console users. And just selling Skyrim with new graphics is a cheap way of getting us to buy the same game.

So please Bethesda add something new. With the new hardware it would be a shame not to use it for something other than graphics. It would mean alot to fans like me who buy nearly every game you make.

they aren't adding anything new, its just a simple remaster, not a remake or anything..

and I don't want to be "that guy", but you used the word "reboot" wrong in your title.. a reboot would be restarting the entire franchise from scratch, as in if the first 5 games (Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim.. skyrim wasn't the first :) ) never happened and restarted from the very beginning.. a "remaster" is what this is (as you stated "same game with new paint"), and a "remake" is remaking the specific game from the ground up.. the three are not synonyms for each other :)

anyways, welcome to the forums, hope you enjoy your stay :)

Oh right thanks, I didn't actually know there was a difference. Still you have to admit a remaster of a game that only came out recently isn't going to be hard for them. If they expect us to pay for a full price I just expect something different.

My wild guess would be you don't know what a reboot is. :P

Anyhow:

They aren't giving us any new "hardware", and the upgrade we'll be getting is there pretty much exclusively for the graphical benefits. Support for the latest directx and bit system won't give them any improvements on what gameplay elements they could add that they couldn't add in the original. So if they do add something new in the game, like quests or gameplay elements, and I hope they do although I don't have high hopes for that at all, it will have absolutely no relation to software upgrades.

see, I personally think games from only last gen don't need remasters, they still usually hold up pretty well and are still easy to get ahold of.. now older games, say 6th gen or older I could see deserving a remaster since they can be very hard to get ahold of these days (since digital downloads weren't a thing back then) and could use a simple resolution upscale..

still, lots of people seem happy for the skyrim remaster, so each their own i guess..

Has a MSRP for the console versions been set yet? PC players who already have the original game and all three paid DLCs are getting it for free.

I don't think this is entirely correct. The 64 bit Dx11 engine should allow mods with larger landmasses, more npcs, better FPS, more stability, etc. The modding potential of 64 bit Dx11 is lot more than just graphics.

Potential is there, but people hardly pushed the old version to it's maximum, so I don't think we'll see anything revolutionary now. FPS and stability was already there with the old version, at least for me, now it will just be more stable with better graphics.

My goodness. You've finally got yourself a shiner-looking game and the ability to add mods, and now you're already wanting more? :ermm:

Maybe I run more mods than you, or maybe we have different definitions of FPS and stability. My game is stable enough most of the time, yet still crashes occasionally. Sometimes I can play for hours and hours without a crash and then it will crash inexplicably and completely randomly a couple times in a row for no apparent reason.

I get good frame rates most of the time but not in certain areas affected by mods. Game slows to 25 -35 FPS in heavily modded areas such as Towns (ETaC) and Cities (JK Skyrim) and occasionally lags on cell load in bad weather. I have a moderately heavy load, with JK Skyrim (main cities), ETaC (complete), Skyrim HD (lite version), SMIM (lite version), SFO (basic version), Wet and Cold, Frostfall, Convenient Horses, aMidianBorn, DynDoLOD, WATER, and Requiem. I've got maybe 50 other mods.

I am pretty sure that a modernized 64 bit/Dx11 engine would give me better performance on my 4670k CPU/780ti GPU with increased stability, and I might be able to add a few more mods/move up to full versions of Skyrim HD/SMIM/SFO, etc.

Around 130 mods with only a couple of crashes a month is stable for me. I only get bellow 30 fps in the center of Riften. The point is moot though, stability is a must regardless of the game version, not something that should come as an upgrade (nor are engines built with 50 mods running at once in mind). Not that completely vanilla games were ever stable when it comes to Bethesda studios. :P
