Skyrim-Remastered and DirectX-11 question

Post » Thu Aug 25, 2016 7:00 pm

Hi gamers,

Past Skyrim user, anxious to return for Skyrim-Remastered.

I hope to play Skyrim-Remastered on a Virtual Machine (Mac Pro, Parallels-11, Windows 7X4).

Unfortunately the developers of Parallels do not yet support DirectX-11 in spite of heroic efforts to persuade the Parallels staff to do so.

And so, the question becomes, will Skyrim-Remastered run on DirectX 10 or DirectX9?

Thanks much, and happy gaming.

Addendum: Oops, well I screwed this up and should have posted it in the PC sub forum. Sorry.

I don't think anyone knows for 100% sure, but I am fairly certain the DX11 is a hard requirement, it will not run on anything but a DX11-enabled PC.

As of right now, the only upside known to Skyrim remaster is the DX11-driven graphical upgrades and enhanced textures. removing what DX11 gives you leaves you with very few reasons to be hopeful for that remaster.

Much like Fallout 4, DirectX 11 is hard requirement. Also for all intents and purposes DirectX 10, is 11 only a obsolete version, like Direct 8/8.1 is to DirectX 9.0c.

Not saying the engine couldn't be tweaked to run outside of DirectX 11, but it wouldn't be stable.

I strongly recommend that you use Boot Camp to re partition your system and install Windows (preferably 10 for optimal support). Virtual Machines are not recommended for demanding games.

Hi,

Thanks much, for the info. Although Final Fantasy XIV runs extremely well on Parallels-11 and Windows 7 X4 along with the Logitech G13, G400 and Dual Action controller. The arrangement supports just about anything USB I can throw at it,.

I will take your advice tomorow, and install a bootcamp partition and install Windows 10 onto it. I'll dedicate it to nothing but Skyrim and Skyrim-Remastered. I was told that Bootcamp will support DirectX11, so I should be ok.

Having tried windows 8 on parallels, and recalling what a disaster it was; I dread dealing with Windows 10, and having to put up with the lack of privacy it's known for. Maybe that won't be a big deal since I'll never use it for anything but gaming. Use of PC Magazine guide on how to reinstate some of the privacy on Win 10, along with my intent to dedicate it to gaming only, I should be ok.

The only real difficulty in all this is finding time for gaming. I don't want to end up like the Halo gamer in Atlanta, he died while gaming, from about 7 days of near nonstop Halo.

Thanks again for your replies.

Happy Gaming

One caveat, The_Mongoose: every time you update win 10 (whether manually or auto) you have to redo some of the privacy tweaks again. While overall I love win 10, that sort of thing is a royal PITA. Of course, if you never allow win 10 to access the net, you should be fine without updates....

Stuff like this is the reason I'll eventually migrate to some flavor of linux. I've just been using windows for so long (since 3.0....) that a non-similar GUI gives me the willies. I don't want to revert to win 7 though - because win 10 is so much faster and feels so much solider.
