Skyrim is rewarding?! How so?

What things do you find rewarding in a game? Do you need to get something valuable at the end of a quest for it to feel worthwhile? The daedric quests are good for that.

I find a nice glass of scotch rewarding. I find my goddaughter rewarding. I find old muscle cars rewarding even if I don't actively participate in the hobby these days. I find sportscars rewarding. I find collecting vintage firearms rewarding. I find quiet time rewarding. I find many books rewarding. I find Skyrim to be interesting and therefore, rewarding

See, what I do is: I find something I like, and then I do it. I don't try to hammer on things that aren't for me until "I like them". If I don't like them, if they aren't rewarding, I stop doing that thing or participating in it. Just because somebody else finds their bowling league rewarding doesn't mean bowling is for me.

Maybe this is secret you could try to learn from, Nyde.

Well said. :tops:

Its fun, no video game is rewarding in any other way. Unless you're a gold farmer for an MMO.

u say that its the same loot.........its not.u get different armours and weapons for exploring caves/dungeons aswell.

BUT IF YOU DONT FIND IT REWARDING THEN TAKE WHAT YOU CAN AND SELL/CRAFT TO MAKE IT MORE REWARDING FOR YOUR OWN STYLE/TASTE

The game itself is fun to play but havent found alot to be rewarding myself, i complete the main quest and it takes 3 trips back to whiterun dropping off loot etc for a gaurd to realise what i had done, the jarl still didnt have a clue.

Exploring was fun in the begining then you quickly realise that nothing changes its all the same, over that next hill your gonna find ruins a cave or a building somewhere and its got monsters in and no loot better than what you can make yourself, i accept that most games are going to have a lot of recycling etc but when everything practically looks identical it gets a bit much.

Then theres the sudden realization that you actually have a lot more freedom in saints row the third even down to leveling up and picking perks/weapon upgrades and its not even an rpg by definition.

And finally theres the immortals, i love destroying cities in this game but theres nothing worse than having people that wont die following you around non stop, svcks the fun right out.

Honestly i dont regret buying it because it is good fun, but thats about the only reward your going to get.

The definition of reward is subjective as are the requirements to meet it, especially when discussed in the medium of gaming.

Obviously Skyrims definition differs from yours.

He is talking about in game rewards though, there arent any i have found that could be classed as rewarding, hell half the time most of the people dont acknowledge anything you have done so its not even a sense of achievement type of reward.

You missed my point.

You don't find it rewarding, others do. I'm not saying either opinion or experience is right or wrong...just different. That's how the concept of reward works, everyone has an individual definition.

I'm not into hours of grind to attain high-end loot hence I avoid many MMO's who's reward mechanic is structured that way.

That doesn't dictate the game not being rewarding for others.

Just me.

Most adventuring games (oh wait, "medieval fantasy RPGs"...) make you an adventurer, and yet all you end up doing is: getting gear 10% better to kill enemies 10% tougher

In TES, you are an adventurer, and the game emphasizes on THE ADVENTURE

On the most basic level, for me at least, a game (or movie or book or comic) is rewarding if it entertaining/enjoyable/engaging. If I am enjoying, or being entertained or engaged then the entertainment is rewarding me. Guess what - Skyrim is entertaining/engaging/enjoyable for me, so it is rewarding to play.

Then you get on to other rewards these mediums can provide (some of which Skyrim also provides) but that most basic level should really be present.

But as to the point you are getting at - in game rewards: Exploring - you're subjective view. XP/Gold - why yes, we stopped the evil reign of Hercanth the Big Jaw, our reward is freeing the land from his tyranny and some numbers we can add to our numbers so we can swing our swords harder! HUZZAH! Again, your subjective view. The only thing more I want in relation to completing some quests is the game to recognise the achievement more and any advance I make to feel suitable to what I have done.

There is satisfaction and reward from playing and completing and RPing.

As for loot - obviously there is loot otherwise you would still be dressed in your peasant pants at level 60 and there wouldn't be all these pictures of characters in many different suits of armor/robs wielding lots of different weapons. Quanity though does not equal quality. I like lots of good, well thought out treasures and things like that, but not just for the sake of having something with a different name so I feel I have to go searching the corpse of everything I kill from bandit scum up to Stormcloak nobility. If I was a knight a questing in ye old days I wouldn't expect the body of the starving brigand I just killed to have Excalibur on him (unless I was on a quest to retrieve it from a Brigand or he was in a location where it might make sense for him to have it - ancient ruins or tombs the bandits have looted for example), so I don't know why I should expect it on a guy in a game on the same level as that.

The reward is not what you get from the quest, it is the quest itself....

No more or less than it's detractors.

The thread was posed as a question to supporters. If it was titled "Why I find Skyrim unrewarding" I'm sure none would have responded and it could have been 100% QQ.

The only thing I don't find rewarding in this game are the dragon battles. Seriously, I have a surplus of like seven dragon souls! When a dragon comes, I'm like "Ok, cool, it's going to be a difficult fight, but I don't see why I should even bother". I do collect dragon bones and leather but it seems like a waste of time since making dragon armor will probably only cost perhaps two leather/bones or so (I've no idea, just a guess). To make the dragon fights worth it, the dragon armor would better require 30 of each, for each piece!

If you're not having fun, then find something you'll enjoy doing. Life's too short and time's too limited to spend your leisure hours doing something you don't enjoy doing. Personally, I'm enjoying the game because for me, it's fun--that's my reward.

Wrong game for you.

This.

Its a skill based leveling system, not an XP based system. Skyrim must be your first TES game. As DM stated this game/series isnt for you if you dont find exploring rewarding.
