Is Skyrim Scary?

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 8:39 pm

You never played fallout 3 did you?

Cheers

At night, lights off, surround sound on...underground in the subways. Yah...Fallout scared the living crap out of me at times. Haven't experienced that yet in Skyrim.

Nah, not really. Closest thing to "scary" was the early part of "House of Horrors", but in the end, it didn't live up to the name.

Agreed. I was actually recommended to go there by someone.. at first it was great then in minutes it quickly died.

And to add to my previous comment I think they could have done more with cannibals and Hagravens as well.

I was actually hoping it would have some more creepy moments like Fallout 3 did. They made TES more bleak and gritty this time around yet didnt really use it for much horror. They could have easily done this if they brought back zombies or made Draugr creepier because they already have dark gloomy environments. I know I'm not the first to say this on these forums but the draugr just feel like skeletons with clothes.

I really cant even begin to understand why zombies werent included in Skyrim.. they are one of the top "monsters" gamers love and its not like they dont exist in TES already. Add zombies, some of those bloody bones/limbs here and there, some extra fog would be creepy. Dev kit cant get here soon enough. :banghead:

they had zombies in oblivion..........loads(in dungeons).

different land=different enemies

There was ALOT Of Fog Plus THERE Were zombies!

Yeah there are places where there is plenty of fog but I meant in combination with zombies. There are no zombies though, I looked in the strategy guide. :( In Oblivion they looked pretty badass for those graphics so I thought Skyrim zombies would blow them away, but they werent even included. siiiiiiiiiiigh.

Yes but zombies are generic, I watched in a documentary on Discovery that zombies can survive anywhere where there are humans. As long as there are humans there can be zombies.

Doing Mzulft as a level 7 destro Mage is pretty scary since pretty much anything in there can kill you toe-to-toe. I don't use any armor and put all level ups towards Magicka, so my guys are always very squishy. It makes such a huge difference in the tension because there is no margin for error even at the default difficulty.

Too bad the undead and standard frost spiders are not remotely as scary as the creatures of Mzulft.

The blood on the ice quest in Windhelm is pretty creepy if you go about gaining the quest by buying the house (I hope that isn't too spoilery)... creeping around in an empty house with a bunch of frankly weird stuff.

House of Horrors really didn't creep me out until a moment I am walking through and see a disembodied skeletal arm holding a beer mug sitting on a column downstairs.

Honestly though, TES has the ability to get creepy as hell because of lighting, sounds, and liberal use of skeletons... if things are built up to properly. There was a mod in Oblivion... Shadowcrest winery, I think. Creepy as all hell.

I just installed a darker dungeons mod - removes the ambient light so all you get is the little bit that torches and fires can put out, making handheld torches, light spells, and night vision totally necessary. It's awesome, the game probably does darkness better than Doom 3 - but, draugr are too slow and predictable to really be scary. What's needed are some things that rush up at you out of the darkness before you have time to react (other than skeevers.) Had an awesome moment where I was battling a pair of draugr deathlords in a dungeon in almost complete darkness, then stumbled onto a trapdoor in the floor and fell down a level. Had to fight my way back up through a bunch of spiders, all the while hearing Jordis's ongoing fight with the draugrs. Never would have happened if I could see.

there are very creepy moments like the dark brotherhood, but there are only a few scary ones like that house in markarth and the dwemer ruin you have to go through to reach blackreach

Not scary, but Draugrs in the Alduins temple were quite fearsome, there was probably some advantage in them via level scaling at the time I entered in the temple. And in the early levels I scared frost trolls - I almost forget that one.

Not as scary as those 6th house bases in Morrowind but maybe that's because I'm 10 years older now.

Scary? Pfft, no. Disturbing at times? Sure. Disturbing isn't scary.

And what the heck is so special about this Sapphire person..?

I thought I was going to be the only one. Falmer scare the hell out of me. They remind me of the mole people from the movie 'The Descent'.

I don't know about scary but it has a certain intensity in some places especially if you are trying to sneak around undetected. I have had a couple of jump scares that surprisingly got me. One of the best was when I was sneaking through a crypt being very quiet. It was in a dark location and Lydia was right behind me. I stopped to look around and turned to look behind me for some reason and some undead creature had stalked up right behind Lydia and was just standing there probably about to attack but it hadn't made a move yet or uttered even a sound. Yea that made me jump. Then I laughed at how awesome it was that he snuck up quietly like that. It was pretty cool.

Depends really. Some of the Daedra lords can be down right spine-chilling like Namira.

The lighthouse scenario freaked me out, and I get spooked when I have to go through an ancient dwemer ruin, and the Blackreach. But mostly it has an epic feeling.
