Is Skyrim Scary?

There are times when I feel so immersed that I actually feel a slight fear when coming across a powerful draugr/dragon/dragon priest/troll.

The lighthouse scenario freaked me out, and I get spooked when I have to go through an ancient dwemer ruin, and the Blackreach. But mostly it has an epic feeling.

Ya, Blackreach was freakin awesome

Sometimes when i'm unaware and wolf jumps on me out of nowhere i jump but the game isn't scary otherwise.

Sabre tooths are pretty terrifying when you're at a low level - they'll just about one shot kill you, plus, unlike wolves, they don't howl and snarl before they attack, they're just suddenly on top of you mauling you to death.

Scary over all, no. Do some of the encounters have the ability to surprise the heck out of you? Yup!

Took the words right out of my.....fingers? But yeah....I damn near fell backwards when a Sabre Cat jumped me at the end of a bridge.

I got attacked from behind from another one, that I had no clue was there and I quite literally yelled "holy [censored]!" as I jumped up off my chair. It's the sudden impact sound that gets me. I play it fairly loud, apparently not loud enough to hear the SOBs sneaking up on me though.

Not to be confused with the normal physical 'jump' reaction to a sudden shock (which actually has nothing to do with the sensation of fear and is very simple to initiate), no video game, movie, story, book or anything fictional has ever scared me - and never will. I think these kind of things only really cause a sense of fear in people of a nervous disposition or children.

Absolutley love the game though. But scary? No of course not.

Scary? Not in the traditional sense I guess.
Daggerfall was pretty scary at times, mostly due sounds and even music. Skeleton at starter dungeon freaked me out. Ancient Vampires scared me, and I'd still be scared of them compared to Skyrim ones. Arriving at Daggerfall hearing Lysandus' Ghost didn't help :D However I didn't look at Daggerfall as a "scary game".
Morrowind was more freaky and earie than scary, with its 6th house thing going. Then again, too alien to me so I couldn't really develop any kinds of feelings for it. I know that's just me though and few others :P
Oblivions only scare was "how long is this fight gonna last" once detected, on highest difficulty.
My only "scares" in Skyrim is more like "will it crash" or "will I survive this encounter".

That being said, I don't play these games to be scared. In fact I don't play games that base the whole experience on the scare factor at all. Most fail, and those that doesn't still doesn't really get to me, gameplay wise.

Edit: Note that I love being on constant edge though. Even through easy dungeons I play like my life depended on it. Constantly sneaking, trying not to get spotted etc. Guess I'm simply incapable of playing a charging warrior :P

The game is not scary because there is nothing crazy in the water.

Spiders, Chaurus, Dwemer-made spiders, traps I weren't aware of and probably a buncha other things scare the heck outta me.

Darn spiders should learn to stay away from Draugr dungeons. :(

The monsters and people are all like old friends.
Old friends that I bludgeon to death on occasion.
I do miss the wild boars and cliff runners.
Whom used to bludgeon me to death on occasion.

Surprised yes, but never scared. If I were facing most of these beasts in real life, I'd probably crap my pants... but the game just doesn't evoke feelings of dread the way a good horror game or movie would. That's fine, as it's not intended to be a horror game.

This reminds me, though: I don't quite understand arachnophobes. There are mods to remove spiders from the game for those who are arachnophobic. Why? They're in a video game. I assure you I'm dragonophobic in real life (haven't seen one and hope I never do), but in a game, they're fun. I don't have any phobias that I know of, though, so obviously I have no way of "getting it".

Honestly, I have terrible arachnophobia in real life, and I don't understand it, either. The only time a spider in-game has made me jump is once when I was in a dungeon I had run through a room to loot a chest, and when I turned around this huge frostbite spider dropped down from the ceiling on top of my companion. I almost jumped out of my chair!

I don't find the game that scary, but occasionally something will startle me. I also tend to get really creeped out if I'm in a dungeon for too long; the same thing used to happen when I stayed underground a long time mining in minecraft.

Depends on where i am and what creatures are there..

I find it really scary when i'm on a Dwemer Ruin and those Dwemer Spiders sneak on me..
Falmers scary the hell of me sometimes too..

Hmm.. what more ?

- Draugrs that sneak on my back, and then when i look behind there is this thing staring at me.

- The Giant Spiders, not the normal ones, the ones that is HUGE, really HUGE... It's like 4 of myself.

- Hagravens

- Frost Trolls used to scare me.. Not anymore..

Guess it's just it.

That black demon beast in the dwarven ruins...

oh wait that was in another game. :P

I don't find the spiders as creepy as I thought they were going to be. I actually think they should be much harder than what they are. Plus I always use life detect in spidery areas to make sure I know where the ceiling hidden ones are lurking. In one cave / ruin place there was 3 of those big ones on the ceiling. Glad I noticed that before getting them on my head... haha.
