Skyrim Screenshot anolysis #1

It's concept art buddy. Unless you can think of a better suggestion, stop criticizing mine.

Can I think of a better one? Sure, given it's size and angle it's seen from, I think it could be a bovine or minotaur horn. They are not just simple curves.

And think to adhere to it being a mammoth horn when there is no evidence in favor of, but plenty of evidence against, doesn't make much sense.

Which makes for three strikes against it.

'Strike' 1. "It's too small"
'Strike' 2. "The curvature is wrong."
'Strike' 3. "The curvature is wrong." - again?

All valid points. And clearly well thought out might I add.

Yeah, too bad I already mentioned that. Seems like you actually read my post and took this directly from it or else I really doubt you would have used the word 'bovine'.

there is no evidence in favor of, but plenty of evidence against

Name one such bit of evidence.

And after looking at some pictures of cow horns, I found http://i.ehow.co.uk/images/a06/7k/bk/anatomy-cow-horns-800X800.jpg. That looks like a pretty similar shape to me.

Lol nowhere close. I think http://www.rarebreeds.co.nz/texas3.jpg is a far better example. But I've already stated the problems with it belonging to a minotaur.

Now compare it to http://www.joshuarue.com/mammoth_skull.jpg and it looks completely off.

It's a make-believe secondary tusk. Where's your evidence now?

Seing it alone, my bet would also be in a bovine, I believe there's a species in the real world with a very similar curvature of horns. Sadly I cannot recall their name...

But knowing that mammoths are in the game... well, guess we'll have to wait and see : |

About the http://download3.zenimax.com/akqacms/files/tes/screenshots/DraugrGroup_wLegal.jpg, there seems to be some sort of trailing effect on their eyes. So if they move to the right, you'll see a blue light trailing after the eyes. The left draugr in the shot is showing it (just moved his head up), and it's also visible in the trailer at some point. Pretty cool.

A cow's horn, when viewed from the right angle, can have that exact same shallow 'S' curve as the horn in the screenshot. Some even have a slight corkscrew shape to them.

The mammoth horns, however, begin to curve back on themselves, which is something the horn in the screenshot clearly does not do.

http://www.rarebreeds.co.nz/texas3.jpg. I already mentioned that but the problem is they'd have to be protruding from the sides of the head instead of the top. An odd design for a minotaur, don't you think? It is a possibility though, as I said before.

Theres a bit of rapid water splashing up at the bottom of this Cave picture: http://videogametalk.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Skyrim-Cave01.jpg . Theres been a bunch of complaining abotu the water, but then again, the game isnt finished, and its on xbox, so im sure itll look great on PC at release. Still looks fine in this shot.

Forget the floating cheese, I'm more concerned about the size of that puny mammoth tusk.

http://i53.tinypic.com/jpylhl.jpg

You know, I never actually realized that was a mammoth. I just thought it was a hole in the ground, surrounded by some grass, with the tentacles of Cthulu attacking the player.

I am now sad that there will be no cthulu tentacle beasts in Skyrim.

valid points yes, if we were comparing that tusk to a normal mammoth's, skyrim's mammoths however seem to be a bit different if not only due to the fact that they have 4 tusks instead of 2.

the one in the bar is similar to the lesser tusk in the concept art so the "it's too small" argument is no longer watertight.
next comes the curvature, that can go both ways actually...it could be that the 3d model is different from the concept art which is a rather common occurrence or it could be that it belongs to another creature.

I was actually thinking of it not in a minotaur but in the actual cow :P But yes, there isn't a really big chance there will be cow herdes or something along that in Skyrim...

And thanks, not sure if those were the ones I was thinking of, but they sure look similar ;)

Ahh, well you never know. I'm fairly certain though it's a mammoth's 'lesser' tusk like cpreston said.

Only Skyrim's mammoths have secondary tusks. They can be shaped any which way the devs want them to be. Not that hard to accept. Get over it.

Let's see, how about some simple visual comparisons?

First, we have the small mammoth tusk http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/7879/comp2f.jpg

Second, the tusk from the shelf. http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/6070/comp1y.jpg

Third, some horns from real cows. http://i.ehow.co.uk/images/a06/7k/bk/anatomy-cow-horns-800X800.jpg http://i.ehow.co.uk/images/a07/aa/jg/mount-cow-horns-800X800.jpg http://www.hiwtc.com/photo/products/1/00/97/9746.jpg(specifically the bottom one.

Now, in each picture, they all display a similar shallow "S" curve. If we compare pic 1 and 2, we can see that pic 2 lacks the distinctive curve at the end that pic 1 has. If we compare pic 2 with pics 3, 4 and 5 we see the same basic shape. Of course, you could argue that pic 1, from the concept art, is just that, concept art. And that is true, it is concept art. However, it's also the only picture we have of a Skyrim mammoth. If the horn in pic 2 doesn't match the only mammoth tusk picture we have, then there is no basis for it to be a mammoth tusk Especially not when it bears as close a resemblance to the real cow horns that it does.

By your logic we have no reason to believe it's a minotaur horn either. I can't believe you're still on about it after I've disproved so many of your arrogant claims.

However, those are some nice comparisons.

Do we have confirmation that cows are going to be in skyrim? And if we don't then why would we assume the tusks are from an unconfirmed species, when we know that mammoths are in, just unsure of the specific looks?

In my opinion, i would rather assume that the mammoth tusks have undergone a slight change and the tusk we see in the picture is the smaller set of tusks instead of assuming that cows will be in. (if they are confirmed then correct me please) =P

This. Until I see cows or a Texas Longhorn styled Minotaur, I'm convinced it belongs to a mammoth. Sorry.

Considering how little we know about what creatures will be in, I don't think we can rule them out, yet. And the fact remains that the image does not match what we DO know, so it's more likely related to something we don't know yet.

Well we got beef meat in Skyrim: http://news.tgn.tv/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Skyrim4.jpg
Don't see why we wouldn't have some sort of cattle then.

My best guess is therefore:
1) some rather small Mammoth with a minor horn
2) a minotaur or other new creature in Skyrim
3) horn from cattle

What we know is that Mammoths have four tusks. Two are traditional long curved incisors. The others that underly the main protrusions are completely fictitious. Concept art is concept art. There is nothing definite about it. I'm sure you can fathom that sometimes developers implement different things from what they draw on paper. Need an example? Look up concept art for Leyawiin.

A fair point. Though it is still nothing but a visual illustration for what the game may have. Mammoths were confirmed. Horkers, goats, and anything with beef in it so far haven't been.
