Skyrim Is Short?

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 4:42 am

This is the longest game I've played since Fallout: New Vegas. Lack of content is the last thing to be concerned about in Skyrim.

I don't know if it was short or long. I found it a bit boring, I mean it was okay.. idk. It seemed about as long as Oblivion though.

I think its huge there are loads of side quest and stuff to explore BUT yes the main quest is crap its short and not very engaging.

I have done over 250 hours and I am no where near clearing all the content, so its not tiny.

Skyrim too short?

You're doing it wrong.

EDIT: Hmm, should put some content in;

Tester completed in 2 hours.. with fast travel, carriages, sure why not. Oblivion only took longer because they overdid the gates.. they didn't even feel like a threat.. just an extra copy/paste cave from time to time.

Can't comment on epic'ness, still haven't gotten halfway in main quest on any character, but so far I've found the quests mostly interesting, although obviously drawn out to make you run across the world so far, but I actually enjoyed that.

Spoiler
I had a genuinely fun time running from Riverwood to Kyrngrove with the last blade, the NPC would chat with fairly interesting things.. and when I saw her in combat with a katana.. my jaw dropped a little as I figured out who she was

Seriously thou, if you find Skyrim too short, its because you've skipped the content. The quests and factions are only a small part of the whole experience

i've played for 50 hours now, I'm lvl 33 and only completed the DB questline, so I still have tons of stuff to do, definitely not short for me!

Doesn't feel short to me. About 50-60 hours in and only completed the Imperials/Stormcloacks questline, only did about 2 of the main quest, 2 of the DBH and 1 of the companions. Ofcourse, if you follow up on every quest once you get them, use fasttravel and move on to the next: everything would feel short.

Buddy has played about 20 hrs and is still fooling around in the Whiterun area. If you wander and explore - the essence of all TES - games, you won't get bored so fast. Of course you have to set wandering and exploring as a personal goal to begin with.

112hrs without doing the mages and dark brotherhood questlines suggests to me that this game is anything but short.

thats twice the length i played oblivion and saw everything.

need to explore more, and rush less.

I'm 100 hours in and just came across a bug that won't let me progress any further in the companions quest line... too short... I hardly think so. superbly irritating... that sounds more like it! I'm sorry but am I the only one in this world who believes that you shouldn't always have to spend more money on DLC or wait months for a patch to properly play a game? I can deal with minor bugs like not being able to put armor on the stands in my solitude home but to not be able to complete a quest because I've already been to a certain dungeon before I got a quest to go there or to complete half of a quest line only to be stopped because the [censored] npc won't even mention continuing on? This is ridiculous people and this is coming from someone that actually loves this game... I guess that's why its so doggone frustratin TO NOT BE ABLE TO COMPLETE IT ALL! Let's worry about fixing the quests asap bethesda... especially b4 worrying about some useless (for console players anyway) creation kit... real fans of bethesda should all be outraged by this whole load of crap!

Don't rush the game.

I have 81 hours and I haven't finished any of the quest lines.

Hell I've just found out there's a whole new underground section that is as big as a Hold (Skyrim's state for those who don't know) with its own dungeons and stuff!!

I only get the chance to play an hour or two a day so the game certainly doesn't feel short to me. I look forward to every evening so I can explore a bit more. For me it isn't about completing the game so much as absolute escapism. Wandering around, exploring and picking up odd quests, reading books, doing up my home, etc etc. are keeping me completely busy. I did about a quarter of the main quest but have now become a vampire and joined the Dark Brotherhood. Each day I get to do a couple of jobs, drink a bit of blood, explore the odd dungeon but then have to return to the real world. Currently I'm a bit lost in the Rat Tunnels but will have to wait until tonight to sort it out. If you have a lot of time on your hands/just want to complete the main quest it could understandably seem short, but I certainly don't feel that way.

Hi, everyone.
I don't know if it's me, or is Skyrim short compared to Oblivion? I beat the Skyrim main quest easily and it was kind of disappointing. I also beat ALL of the guild quests that I know of (Companions, Winterhold, Dark Brotherhood, Thieves). It also seems that there's less quests and more miscellaneous tasks (basically "BRING ME A TUSK FROM A MAMMOTH AND YOU GET MUNIEZ!!@!11!!").

Thoughts?

im 210 hrs in and i think its really short.

Personally, I wasn't entirely satisfied with the Skyrim main quest. Oblivion's MQ had its problems, sure...but it still felt like you were part of this epic battle to save the world.

In Skyrim, I just didn't really get that feeling.

Sorry not to me. OBs main quest I felt like nothing but an idiot errand boy in the end. Then that little twirp Martin takes all the credit for all the work I put into it IMO. Atleast in Skyrim I feel like I am part of some destiny. People only think the game is short because they only run through the main quest and factions and forget all the side quests and misc and exploring. Then complain it is too small or short. If people wanted a quick fix linear game I wouldn't suggest TES.

I don't understand these complaints. I'm 120 hours in, still haven't finished the main quest. Granted, I'm playing with my 3rd character, but still, I feel the amount of unique content of the MQ, the guild quests and the civil war quests, combined, is outstanding!

I've only finished the companion's quests, ever.

Of course, if you rush through these, you may find them short but I think this takes away most of the fun of the game.

I'm on my second (legit) character, with my first already having done the main questline and started the Companions. He's also level 50 through the use of cheats.

My second character is the Listener of the Dark Brotherhood and is working on becoming a Nightingale in the Thieves Guild. I've only done the main quest line up to fighting the Kynesgrove dragon. It's my third day playing this character.

The game isn't short. It's got way too much content for that.

Skyrim is anything but short, what I don't get is how people can be only level 38 after 80 hours. I would like to level that slow too (because I think thats a good thing for character progression). But my character is 28 after 18 hours. Without smithing and enchanting.

I think, personally, in terms of the main plot it does feel quite short-- if you are not using Fast Travel and Carriages, a number of the Quests can feel like 'padding' simply due to how far away the locations are from each other (this is assuming you are literally just following the Main Quest, and not doing any exploring)-- and I think that really makes it feel a lot shorter, because you wander for so long, do a 'short' dungeon in comparison, and then on to the next long walk. In that style of play, the Main Quest is, I would say, something like 80% padding; if you play it more like most people on here seem to (i.e., exploring, wandering around, doing side-quests) then the Main Quest can feel a lot more substantial, because you have that lengthening of time between plot-events.

There is a lot to do, but I think the pacing of some questlines is a bit off in places, which can also impact the overall feeling of length-- but there are other threads that discuss that, so no need to really go into it here.

This reminds me that I need to get back to the MQ sometime. 80-90 hours, level 48, and I've just found out about the special shout.

(Only done the Companion's guild questline, too. Now, that could have been longer. Of course, if it had actually required several of the random quests in between each stage of the main questline, it would have been a bit longer. I think that's a bug.)

Mostly I explore alot. And get distracted by dungeon runs. And sidequests.

Skyrim is anything but short, what I don't get is how people can be only level 38 after 80 hours. I would like to level that slow too (because I think thats a good thing for character progression). But my character is 28 after 18 hours. Without smithing and enchanting.

Leveling speed slows down a good bit. Also, it probably depends on what mix of skills you're using.

Too short? Sure, maybe, if you tunnel-vision the main quests, and ignore the extraordinary amount of distractions available at almost every turn. Take some time to slow down and appreciate the game, instead of just trying to "beat it".

It's a role-playing game, meaning you play the role you choose. The game is 100% what you make it.

I played 65 hours on my first character, and about 30 on my second, and neither is close to "beating" the game. Maybe it's just me, but I OFTEN just stop and stare at the scenery for minutes at a time, I "walk" or "jog" instead of sprint when I'm exploring. I try to listen to and read most of the conversations. The world still looks spectacular to me every time I enter it. I use fast travel only when I end up having to travel the entire continent for a quest, and most of the time ENJOY running through unexplored areas. Every few feet it seems like there is a camp/cave/fort/clearing/pond/etc. to discover. The world is so vast and full of cool and interesting life. To everyone saying "game short, beaten on master in 20 hours": you're full of poo, the game is pretty difficult on adept.

I've waited for how many years for this game to release? I'm in no hurry to finish it. In fact, I don't care if I finish it, I just want to keep on going as long as it remains interesting and fun, and at this rate, that will be a long time.

FANTASTIC JOB BETHESDA.

p.s.

I play on PC and have encountered minimal bugs, definitely none of the "game-breaking" bugs. It runs beautifully, and my only hitch so far has been a few 'crash to desktops', maybe 8 total in over 90 hours of play.

I've only seen "kind of" misspelled this way once before in my lifetime, and never thought I'd see it again... law of averages?

There's no such thing as correct English, only standard. I'm well aware that "kind've" isn't standard English, and would always use use "kind of" in a formal context (such as an essay or a letter). However, in informal speech it's a perfectly acceptable pronunciation spelling to reflect my regional accent, and is certainly more befitting than something like 'kinda' - which would make me sound American.

But...kind've = "kind have" not "kind of"

If you are implying that you just created that word to suit your accent...well then you sure are the first person I've ever come across who does that :P

Like everyone has said, Elder Scrolls titles really are what the player introduces as well as what the game provides. Try exploring, never fast travelling (including carriages), and getting off the road. It's certainly not short. I've done about 40 hours total between a trial and a main quest runs. I've done three hours on my new "main" character and have already found 20+ things I didn't know existed. I haven't even gone to Riverwood yet!
