Skyrim Is Short?

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 3:23 pm

Hi, everyone.
I don't know if it's me, or is Skyrim short compared to Oblivion? I beat the Skyrim main quest easily and it was kind of disappointing. I also beat ALL of the guild quests that I know of (Companions, Winterhold, Dark Brotherhood, Thieves). It also seems that there's less quests and more miscellaneous tasks (basically "BRING ME A TUSK FROM A MAMMOTH AND YOU GET MUNIEZ!!@!11!!").

Thoughts?

Oblivion was long, and rather boring. You had all these gates, wich were COPY & PAST, as you remember there were only couple of them, so you often cleared EXACTLY THE SAME place in the gate. After clearing few clones I gave up, and unistalled the game.

Skyrim is short as well. Nowadays theres a lot of things cut off the game, and they include less content, so developers can then sell DLC, and put the missing content in the game (where it should already be) for EXTRA MONEY. Im nearly finishing main quest line, and Im like.. already? Beside travelling & fighting that take a lot of time, its short.

The questlines are disappointingly short, yes. As with all TES games though, the game is what you make of it. If you rush through everything systematically, using fast-travel to get around, you're going to be done with the game very quickly. Whereas if you take your time, walk everywhere, and mix exploration / dungeon crawling / misc side quests in with main questline / faction questline progress, you'll be far more satisfied.

I guess you could argue that the busier, more hand-crafted gameworld kind've balances out the shorter questlines, if you make the most of it.

Also user made content can extend the game time by quite a bit if you are on PC. I know a couple mods for Oblivion that had their own quest line and were very well done.

Personally, I wasn't entirely satisfied with the Skyrim main quest. Oblivion's MQ had its problems, sure...but it still felt like you were part of this epic battle to save the world.

In Skyrim, I just didn't really get that feeling.

Oblivion was actually painful to play without mods. The quests were boring and graphics outdated.

The quest lines are short yes, but if you slowed down and explored a bit more it would last a lot longer.

Are you high? I put 172 hours into just one of my profiles and I havent even gotten halfway through the main quest. I dont think it's short at all. Not to mention there's like.. 10 thousand dungeons to explore. Sorry but I disagree.

I actually found skyrim to be of a pleasant length. I never finished Oblivion, because it was just too much running around or doing essentially the same oblivion gate over and over again; at least each different quest in Skyrim's MQ is significantly different from the last.

I just took a peek at Oblivion's MQ, and I think people were just forgetting that most of it's MQ was pretty dang boring. Here's my summarization of it:

Delivery
Delivery
Oblivion Gate
Delivery
Delivery
Fun Infiltration Quest
Delivery
Delivery
Oblivion Gate
Oblivion Gate
Oblivion Gate
Oblivion Gate
Oblivion Gate
Mildly interesting dungeon crawl
Mildly interesting dungeon crawl
Timed Oblivion Gate
Interesting Infiltration Quest
Delivery

So while it was a bit longer, it was also mostly just filler. If you count your random dragon encounters as part of the Skyrim MQ, they're really quite similar.

It's not -really- short, it's larger than Morrowind. Morrowind just felt huge because you had to walk everywhere, it didn't have more content, it just took longer to access that content.
Oblivion had the exactly same problem, fast travel was always a bad addition to the Elder Scrolls series in my opinion, and frankly it's addictive.
You use it once or twice when you just plain don't feel like walking a million billion miles from Riften to Markarth and then bam, you're using it for every quest before you know it.

Hey....I saw a press release where one of the testers did the main quest in 2 hours. now that is something to aspire too!

Like I know everyone wants to bag something for what it's not but I'm finding Skyrim is a good enough game! Sure I miss the number crunching stats but I'm starting to like the perk system. Sure I'd like to see what they could do with a pc version but I'm like 70 hours in ( started again after 40 ) and having a grand old time!

Like no drama. See how quick you can do the main quest and post that......gives you some replay value one thinks?

It took me 110 hours to complete all the main factions and get all throphies/achievements for Skyrim. Was my adventure over by then? No, not even close.

A misc task to get something for someone, or it being part of a quest.. What's the difference? You seem to count misc tasks as not-actual content and stuff to do, but if the same objective is called a side-quest, it suddenly counts as actual content. :/

I just got done telling someone my main impression of Skyrim's questlines is that they're too short.

Short? I've been playing for 80 hours, my character is level 38, and there are a couple of major cities I haven't even been to yet... mostly because I'm trying to clear some quests and miscellaneous tasks out of my quest log first. The only major quest line I've actually finished is the College of Winterhold arc — an arc that spans two huge dungeons, three medium-sized dungeons, several big fights, numerous expository scenes, quite a bit of dialogue, and even a few relevant books to read. A lot of people cite it as being a short arc, and while the rise to archmage does seem amazingly abrupt, this is a video game and that's true of most accomplishments the player can achieve. Aside from the main College of Winterhold arc, there are a ton of side quests in and around the College, a secret or two to discover, and so on.

I actually listen to dialogue (carefully) and exhaust the available options, read various books, investigate the cities and dungeons carefully, use fast travel sparingly, experiment with Alchemy, and just generally take my time. Games like Skyrim are meant to be savored like a tray of assorted fine cheeses, not gulped down like a cup of Kool Aid. If you feel this game is short, then you're simply not the type of player who can fully appreciate it. That's fine, but the game itself is in fact packed with content; you're just skipping and rushing through a lot of it. I'm not even talking about finishing every single dungeon on the map, nor stealing everything from every building, nor even collecting every book or interesting decorate trinket.

I've been playing Elder Scrolls games since Morrowind in 2002, and since then I also finished Daggerfall. I love Morrowind (and hated Oblivion; that's a tale for another time, though), but Skyrim definitely has more content, even though certain things have been simplified and pared down in the sequels that followed.

Quite a bit? a modded oblivion is endless, I had poured 2000+ hours on it and still had stuff to do.

Regarding Skyrim, I've played for 130 hours and I'm still halfway through the MQ and only done the companions QL, not to mention the civil war. I reached Riften only 10 hours ago. It's short if you fast travel, kill, skip conversation and only do quest lines systematically. And even that way, It's still longer than most games.

I've played for 27 hours and I'm on the MQ part where I have to go up the mountain to the Greybeards (I think) and I've just started all the guilds. As in the farthest I've been in any of them is 2 quests in.

So...no., it's not short. I explored which is what this game was meant for.

You don't play pong for the freedom and you don't play an Elder Scrolls game for the arcade challenge.

You must be roleplaying with every chicken you come across. I have 144 hours and counting and I'm level 76. I've also beat pretty much every main quest except for the companions and the windhelm murder.

Yes the main quest is short. The only quest that impressed me is Diplomatic Immunity. Other than that, other quests are lackluster.

Guild quests are short and lame as well. I'd rather prefer 15 good meaningful quests than 5 meaningful quests plus unlimited amount of meaningless and boring "radiant" quests. They are not that "radiant" after all.

People have put like 100 hours into this game already. I don't think it can be called short.
