Skyrim should have...

Post » Sun Sep 05, 2010 3:45 am

Well, I've been seeing all these great posts that suggest that Skyrim should have guns, and cannons, and primitive rockets and bombs. I completely agree! Alchemists could make nitroglycerin and gunpowder, sneaks could use flashbombs to blind their opponents, warriors could be saboteurs and use fire to their advantage. Afterall, not everyone can be a mage and fire explosions from their fingertips!

^ [censored] that noise. Stop threads that even have mention of the things listed above. This isn't Assassin's Creed. This isn't Thief. This isn't CoD. This. Is. Skyrim. And yes, I realize that even saying any of this is hypocritical.

Now for the real post:

The Elder Scrolls caught my attention with Morrowind. I've loved all the interaction that the game offered; the sidequests, the guilds, the freedom, the combat, even the smaller details. Personally, Oblivion was my favorite in the series. Sure, it's plot and story were a little 'meh,' but the overall gameplay (for me) was fantastic. I have not played through very much of Morrowind, because I was distracted from that when I got Oblivion from Walmart in 2009, and never got back to Morrowind - so my opinion on the series is a little biast.

Cyrodiil was practically my playground, and I loved all of the small things about it. Arrows sticking into bodies, the dialogue, being able to pick up/steal everything, the ragdoll physics (though the falling speed of bodies was a bit off). The game had room for lots of change and growth and improvement (*Cough* Combat *Cough*), but so does everything else, and I trust that Bethesda will do right with Skyrim.

This is just general discussion of what you want(ed)/liked/disliked about Oblivion, and what you want/like (so far)/dislike (so far) about Skyrim.
I know there's (probably) lots of threads like this, but I started my own so that it was much easier to see people posts that -I- was interested in, rather than doing lots of thread jumping.

Discuss.

The funny thing is that black pouder and cannons already exist in the wonderful TES world. Also...I believe there are magical cannons as well. The irony.

It's great if they exist, but they're few and far between, and something that a random character like yours would probably never hope to obtain. Then again, this is coming from someone who enjoys playing characters that start you off as an average joe with nothing at the beginning but the cowsh*t on his boot.

What I disliked in Oblivion? Too long list, lazy to type. But I can tell what I disliked in Oblivion and seems to come back in Skyrim: walled cities.

Someone should make an edited version of the 300 "THIS... IS... SPAR TAAA" video for Skyrim.

But on topic, I hated how in Oblivion clothing was so cheap. You shouldn't be able to dress like a noble for 10 coins. I hope there are extravagant clothing options that cost a significant amount of money, while clothing options that cost only a few coins would all be commoner clothes. Maybe they could balance this by making expensive clothing much better at enchanting, on the level of high tier armor.

about skyrim so far - very much looking forward to see how the new combat goes with the bodies reacting to the physical blows etc with the new shield blocking and shield bashing in particular, as well as the random finishing moves that happen(although we havent really seen many i have a picture in my head of age of conanish style fatalities which would be awesome but probably wont end up that way.)

Excited to see how elemental magic will affect the environment around where youre using it, i think todd said somewhere that fire spells could melt the snow or singe the trees in the area it was used or something of that nature either way sounds really cool and cant wait to see how it looks. Along with the environment in general seems extremely detailed with water rippling based on the wind etc.

Radiant story in theory sounds great, could help to further peoples exploration by taking them to places/in directions they havent traveled yet. Hopefully will make the game a different playthrough for everyone in a way, which also would increase its replayability which is probably difficult for a lot of people concerning TES games because you put so much time into them and repeating the exact same quest lines could be frustrating(not to me really, i enjoy replaying.)

Also, one of the cooler sounding aspects of the game is the perk system, it sounds great. Apparently each character is limited to a specific number of perks, so this sounds like it will greatly increase the uniqueness of each character far past the earlier TES games where i found i was almost scared to pick a certain path and stick to it, so you could just do everything and be the best at everything with no negative effects. Soooo the perk system seems to be sort of forcing you away from that which imo is great, youre either mediocre at all the things you want or you can be great at one or a few as your number of perks allow.

Oh and a better 3rd person mode is DEFinitely something i cant wait to see, if they manage to make the 3rd person view flow well with the reactive attacking and the finishers etc...could be great, this isnt a huge deal for me really but could make it a lot more fun.(ie some spartacus style dual sword wielding decapitations, anything would be good though really.)

Should have mounted combat, destructible environments, branched main quest, seasons, factions at war, really different consequences for our choices, larger scale battles, superior writing, npc's being arrested instead of slaughtered, rare non scaled loot, management options for guildmasters, werebeasts...

The sense of culture and politics that Morrowind had, an original story (yeah, right) and proper rewards for exploration and thievery.

I'll finish that title:

Skyrim should have more in common with Nehrim: At Fate's Edge than either Oblivion or Morrowind.

How great would that be? :hubbahubba:

Que the Oblivion hate in 3, 2, 1...

Uhm yea? So? THe thread is directly asking what people disliked about oblivion, so what is your point?

On topic, I'll list the biggest things I disliked in OB:

Too few gear/armor equip slots - HOPEFULLY fixed for skyrim

Horrible level scaling - Fixed

Boring world - Most likely Fixed

Boring beastrace design - Partly Fixed

No unique items placed around the world - Hopefully Fixed

Boring main quest - Hopefully Fixed

Scores of unkillable NPC's - Hopefully Fixed

Terrible UI - Looks even worse unless we get a PC ui

Fast travel. - Somewhat Fixed

No more long/short blade skills - Somewhat Fixed

Walled in Cities - Remains

What I liked:

Improved combat from MW

Physics (somewhat)

Way more interesting sidequest design overall

voice acting (even if it did svck in some areas)

Slightly better sneak system imo

no cliff racers

What Im hoping from Sykrim:

A return to a more unique sense of world, along with actual character progression aka unique items and no terrible level scaling.

Agree.

I do not want guns in TES5, i think it's one of the worst ideas i've heard if you want my opinion on it. I'm not saying you are trying to bring something in from Fable, but i HATE Fable, i do not want to be reminded of it by looking at some old fashioned gun.

EDIT: The most worst idea i've heard yet is the romance ones, if i've been more than sick of seeing a suggestion thread, it's these kinds. I do not like virtual girlfriends, wives, etc. or having to save your distressed girlfriend from the galactic empire (Star wars force unleashed 2's mistake, which is why i chose the dark side).

@Ontopic Discussion:
Why are people hating on Oblivion? I liked it better than Morrowind tbh, alot of stuff isn't perfect about it but i still think it's the best TES game until skyrim.

The stealth system was clearly better but unfortunately the loot scaling defeated the whole fun of being a thief.

Yep, they never should have made it so you can't sell stolen items except at fences who will give you low prices. The idea was that if you could sell stolen items anywhere, stealth characters would be overpowered. So they introduced an artificial limitation on the stealth system basically letting every merchant know if an item is stolen.

What they should have done instead is look at the root of the problem: stealing expensive items was too easy. They should have made it quite difficult to be a thief. It should require some real thought, patience, and skill (both character and player skill). One way that I think could help: make it so many people in the game have dogs in their houses, that will bark at intruders and alert guards. Some commoner houses and many lower class merchants would have guard dogs, while the aristocracy and higher class merchants could afford to hire guards to protect their stuff at least 22-23 hours a day. Also lockpicking should happen in real time, whether it's a minigame or not.

Oblivion is great and totally epic but I think there should of been the dwarves so maybe there will be some that come back in Skyrim. Also I think dragons but there already in the game so I guess that doesn't count lol.

They don't exist any more. The Dwemer, or "Dwarves" are an extinct race of Mer.
