Skyrim should return to a Morrowind-level detail

Post » Mon May 10, 2010 11:28 am

Alright, so I've recently started playing Morrowind again and well, its a fantastic game. So amazing, that I feel it makes Oblivion pale in comparison just by the sheer depth of detail (just look beyond the graphics). 9 Guilds and a main quest alone make the level of detail so much more than Oblivion's. Not to mention all of the skills, weapons, spells, and areas included in Morrowind the level of detail is stunning. The enchantment system was also extremely rewarding. The ability to have swords have defensive capabilities, amulets to shoot out fireballs, and shields to constantly summon a golden saint made the game all the more fun. Oblivion only had 4 guilds and a main quest and only a few artifacts. The enchantment system was extremely limited. Even the end reward for the main quest was disappointing. A set of armor that was most likely much worse than what could be found on a marauder in a dungeon that was already enchanted with useless effects. Maybe thats another point. Anyways, I feel that Skryim should return to at the very least a Morrowind level of choice with guilds and items. Oblivion was great, but it doesnt stand up to Morrowind. Please Bethesda bring the best of Morrowind to Skyrim.

PS I hate fast travel, it doesnt make any sense and even if there is a huge amount of detail in the world, you'll never truly appreciate it because well, you can just fast travel.

Did anybody feel as if Morrowind's interiors were more detailed than Oblivion's? Shields mounted on the walls in gracious quantities and the like? More silverware? Colorful paper lanterns and candles? Arranged displays of plants and furniture in various types of wood? Buildings that didn't have every individual floor in a separate interior cell? :stare:

Oh I see, you meant gameplay detail.

In before someone completely ignores the point of the post and starts bashing Morrowind. And not give and example of how oblivion trumphs the points detailed in the op

I never understood why they did that....

I agree morrowind had much more detail concerning the story and guilds and such; the lowest point of morrowind was it's combat and I don't even mind that much, if they had only made failure help you level skills (because lets face it it's a pain in the ass to have success based leveling when you fail so often) it would have been much better there even. I think alot of the detail may be owed to the fact that it used text dialogue which honestly I don't mind at all either, I love detail and I like reading maybe that's why morrowind was so awesome to me when I got it so many years ago. Oblivion did however have more interesting quests for their guilds. If they could combine morrowind's more detailed story lines with oblivion's interesting quests we'd be set.

AAbsolutely right, morrowind was vastly superior to oblivion in many ways.... especially the level of choice and customization. I was somewhat disappointed with oblivion, but I learned to love it for the few improvements it did bring. I have high hopes that we will get the best of both morrowind and morrowind, but considering beths history I expect twe will get the 'flaws' and 'improvement' from morrowind to oblivion magnified.

With 5 major towns; no levitation, spears, or thrown weapons... they seem to be focusing on what they think we want instead of giving us more choice. Unfortunately what they don't realize is what we really want is in fact more choice.

morrowind is better. oblivion is a little on the generic side. i still like it. but in morrowind you always had the feel of events moving around you. and people who had their own interests and designs. of which you were not central to, and even being used for. oblivion, while placing you in the role of destined hero. had a disconnect with the people and the populous of the game world.

I can choose not to use Oblivion's fast travel system, but I can't choose to use silt striders, boats, gondoliers, guild guides, propylon chambers, special teleporting items, mark/recall, almsivi/divine intervention, levitation, uncapped fortification (esp acrobatics), boots of blinding speed, or anything else that resembles those options.

Which reinforces the op.

I think theyre concentrating too much on dragons. I dont give a crap about dragons and wish they wernt in the game, So all this time wasted on making dragons an intergral part of the game is just wasteing ur time u could have better spent on making a rich and detailed experience.

I'll say it again. I dont want dragons in any TES game.

Hey thats a great idea for a mod. Take all dragons out of the random spawm list.

You don't want dragons. That's cool. I do want dragons. I'm glad they're in the game and I don't think any time spent on them is wasted because, IMO, they make the world a richer, more detailed experience. For me. So let's be careful not to speak for everyone, hey?
And also that whole post is a non-sequitur, we're not talking about dragons.

On-topic, agreed, Morrowind had a level of detail that Oblivion couldn't match. But now, with a bigger team, they might come a lot closer in Skyrim. Some of the stuff we're hearing certainly encourages that hope -- 20+ small villages of ten or more buildings without loading screens? Eight times as many dungeon designers as there were for Oblivion? Everything we hear points to much greater detail in Skyrim than there was in Oblivion.

I am pretty sure everyone will agree that Morrowind is a legendary game and we hope that Skyrim borrows a lot of what made Morrowind fun. There were some nice additions in Oblivion, like being able to join the black hand and dark brotherhood but I will hands down agree that Morrowind is superior. Todd is pretty smart though, I trust that he will make us all happy.

Speak for youself, not everyone. I think Oblivion is a better and more detailed game than Morrowind. Did I blow some people's minds?

Didn't blow my mind because I agree. Daggerfall is my favorite, then Oblivion.

I'm not even referring to favorites. I'm referring to detail. Morrowind has more factions, not more detailed ones. Morrowind has more quests, not more detailed ones (definitely not more detailed quests). People tend not to judge actual detail, but rather mistake quantities for detail. Morrowind this, Morrowind that... More blind Morrowind praise to conform to what's the cool thing, around these forums, these days. Many people don't do that, but newcomers to Morrowind who already start claiming it's better, more detailed, and far more awesome simply because other people say so (I won't name names, but I recognize at least two people in this very thread that I remember doing just that in the past). They mistake more for more detailed. They ignore quality and just demand quantity. They attempt to speak for other people. They attempt to deify Morrowind and as an inarguably supreme game. People are impressionable, and it gets very tiresome.

Quality > quantity.

Not saying Morrowind wasn't a quality game but the actual combat system was awful. There were a lot of choices, yes, but they were very shallow choices. You made the same motions and got the same end effect from most of them. Most destruction spells were essentially identical as were most weapons in everything but appearance - generic chop/slash/thrust with one being more effective than the others so really you just spammed that one. Enchanting was also ridiculously overpowered, on use enchants functioned exactly like spells without the longer animation and without needing a number of high magic skills - it made standard magic essentially obsolete.

Lame! What's up with this then? http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1181505-skyrim-info-compendium-and-faq/page__hl__faq
3. Environment
? 5 major cities: Solitude, Riften, Whiterun, Windhelm, and Markarth
? 20 Minor Cities, each Containing 10+ buildings

If that's been debunked, we should update it...

The thing about having fast-travel is theres always the option of getting around easy. All it takes is "eh, just this one time i dont feel like walking places" and then BLAM! The whole feeling is ruined. Im just saying there should be some things that shouldnt be optional, and traveling everywhere for free makes no sense and making it an option ruins the feel of the whole game.

Also a lot of people have been talking about the amount of cities and villages. I agree completely. That was definitely another one of Morrowind's strong points/Oblivion's weak points. Morrowind had a rich population while Oblivion was pretty shallow. Also the dialog in Morrowind was so much more than a greyed-out "rumors" text for NPCs that werent in charge of a guild or shop owners. Lets hope that Skyrim developers realize that more game play detail goes a lot more than "snow on branches of different weights"

I`m thinking it should but it won`t. Cool graphics, animations and dragons are what attract new players. The people who are already into Morrowind will very likely buy Skyrim anyway, so why pay so much attention to appeasing them if you already got them in the palm of your hand?
