Skyrim Size Compared to the Real World

Post » Wed May 22, 2013 2:14 pm

I was just messing around in google earth earlier today, and remembered seeing something about Skyrim's world-size be around 16 miles2. I made some measurements in Google Earth, and got this...

Skyrim is http://i.imgur.com/ElxJbDw.jpg!

Note, the measurement shown is the perimeter, the area is still the same though.

Just thought it was interesting to see how big or small it'd be in relation to our world.

Daggerfall was the size of Spain or something like that. Big ass map.

I recall that someone made calculations this one time, and concluded that in lore Skyrim is about the size of Germany if we take Daggerfall as a life-size game. Sounds reasonable to me.

That's a bit bigger than the base I live on. Riverwood to Whiterun is probably around the same distance to my school from my house.

That makes the map about the same size as the city of El Cajon in San Diego.

I took up a challenge once, to survive form Markarth to Windhelm. I ran, not sprint form gate to gate and it seems like it took 22 minutes, IIRC. That roughly translates to what... about 5 miles, from the info of the quoted post?

EDIT : Yep... http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1396575-marathon-challenge-markarth-to-windhelm-optional-find-a-flawless-ruby-along-the-path-for-10-minutes/#entry21229134. However, he did sprint when in danger.

As I understand it the land area is a little smaller than the land area in Oblivion.

The often quoted number is 16 square miles (the equivalent of a square with 4 miles per side). I've seen the number 14.5 square miles for Skyrim. Morrowind is also a bit smaller than Oblivion.

But that number is not quite right I think. I once counted the major cells. It came out to much less than 16 square miles (which doesn't take into account slopes).

Of course that does not count dungeon areas, or any other non map areas.

As I understand it Daggerfall is huge because it's landscapes are computer generated, where as Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim are hand crafted.

I remember adding the landmasses to Oblivion from the "World Map" of Tamriel and just walking from coast to coast, it was surprising how small the entire landmass was. If only it had been populated and was not just empty land.

I had posted the dream I had about possibly having a fleshed out Tamriel in TES VI, but I will not hold my breath, and seeing a crater where Vivec City used to be would be upsetting.

Compared to a 'real world' scenario I think you should multiply by 250 in the X and Y dimension (bringing the landmass close to 1 million square km) and by a factor of 20-25 in the Y dimension (if you want the Throat of the World to realistically be in the 5000-6000 meters range)

But realistically, skyrim should be huge if nirn was the size of earth. I reckon skyrim is around france + germany + italy or similar. Cyrodiil is probably 3/4 of russia.

How do you know how much Tamriel makes of Nirn. Most of the planet seems to be water.

And I'd hardly put Nirn anywhere close to the same size as Earth. About the size of Luna maybe.

Not to mention that there are at least two other continents out there: Atmora and Akavir.

Tamriel could be the size of Australia and that would make the individual regions smaller than some people say. If you search on Google Images, there are countless rapresentation of Nirn, each different from another, the works of many dedicated fan of the series.

Here's one:

It seems a lot bigger to me though and that what counts. I wouldn't say I wouldn't enjoy a little more size but it works for me.

I saw a map that had all the landmasses of Nirn overlayed with earth.

Here it is: http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/z362/Nihtantuel/World_Map_FIVB.jpg

It's mostly just estimation, the person who posted it used the Lewis and Clark expedition to figure out the size, somehow.

I had to think for a split second to figure out what "Luna" was.

Im fine with the size though. Wouldnt want it too big, considering i dont use fast travel. So when some quest tells me to go from markath to winterhold (if any)....*GROANS*. Though sometimes i just cave in and use the damn carriage.

This thread and others like it make me feel jipped. Its like we are just getting a sample version of Tamriel. If Tamriel was a real place the scale would be way different each city and settlement would be massive. I rather something like Daggefall but with some places hand made but the rest procedurally generated.

I want TES6 to be the size of the main landmass in Just Cause 2, that'd be great. Lots of places completely hand made, other places done with a generator then tweaked a bit by hand, etc. :)
