Skyrim's Soundtrack (Just for fun, nothing serious.)

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 11:21 pm

Hey everybody,

I know that I spend a lot of time talking about what I consider to be serious business concerning Skyrim's content and gameplay, so I decided to share something a little more light-hearted. I created a song in GarageBand from scratch (using software instruments and my voice, but no pre-loaded loops) to showcase what I think the soundtrack of Skyrim may be like. I hope you enjoy it, it's really just something I did for fun and fandom.

Hey, feel free to geek out and share your art/writing/music/video-related Skyrim goodies. After all, you only get better at what you use.

Here's a link to the video on YouTube: snip Skyrim Unofficial Soundtrack[/url] (YouTube made me gather pictures from around the net to use as a background to the music, but none of them are there for the purpose of spoilers or whatnot. Feel free to just enjoy the music and ignore the images if need be.)

I should note that I tried to make the song in three parts to represent the types of music most occurring in TES games: exploration music, interior music (houses and shops) and battle/dungeon music. I know battle and dungeon are quite distinct, but since 'dungeon' usually describes more ambient noise than actual songs, I'm considering the "fading out" at the end to be dungeon music.

What do you think guys? Oh, and how do you like my Colovian Fur Helm? :D

I MAED THIS FOR YOUUU

Well, I like the idea, since I compose, write and do cgi. Decent piece there Ereptor.

Here's a link to a piece I did that isn't specifically related to Skyrim, but definitely along the fantasy vein of orchestral music. Composed in Sonar, used EWQLSO, Sam Horns, and the old Tobias Church Town
percussion samples. No choir though, sorry.

Oh wow, this seems much more advanced than GarageBand. The instruments are quite convincing. I didn't really take this project on because I have a particular interest in composing musical scores (though it is pretty cool, actually), but rather because I really badly want to hear what Skyrim sounds like. So badly that I was willing to take a stab at it myself.

I don't think I accomplished what I intended to, though. The drums available to me in all of my GarageBand kits (trust me, I really looked) were not heavy or dry enough for the sound I wanted to create. I mostly used timpani because the tribal drum sound I was looking for is completely missing from my library. I suppose my version of GarageBand is fairly limited (and I know that trying to impose a drum loop in an orchestral piece would not go well, no matter how many drums I needed).

The only sound I feel I got right is the nordic-esque chanting at the end, which I actually did myself. Ha, it was fun. I'm really tempted to do more now. :D

I love your soundtrack, awesome! Got any for TES?

OH WOW! By the way, the one you called North Wold... How ridiculously amazing! I had no idea I was talking to a professional at this sort of thing. :foodndrink:

Heh, thanks. I'm not a professional, just a hobbyist. I've made some music for a friend of mine, but nothing really on a professional level.

Your piece is pretty good considering how limited your tools are. Very ambient, and yeah that chanting is pretty bad ass!

Check out http://www.soundsonline.com/home.php and http://www.vsl.co.at/ Expensive stuff, but if you can swing it . . . most of which I can't, heh. Which is why I have the Silver WEQLSO and not gold or platinum or the expansions. :P Stupid layoffs.

As much as I admire your efforts and creativity, unfortunately you have used GI scans in the video that you have linked. This is illegal and thus not permited on this forum. :nono:

Just thought i'd give you fair warning before a moderator brings down the ban hammer :)

I considered that someone might think that to be the case, but there is nothing that can be gleaned from these images in terms of content. I'm fairly certain that as a low-quality image it is acceptable, especially since I am not in any way referencing the material of the articles. The only detailed images are maps and screenshots from around the web (source: Google) and wallpapers from here on Bethesda. No worries. :D

I actually attempted to put just the music up first, but YouTube insisted I found images. Considering the length of this audio clip, there were barely enough images available on Skyrim at the moment to fill the empty space. :|

At least I'm in the right series, I'll take that! This is the first time I've done something of the sort on GarageBand. I only ever use the loops to make generic indie-ish bgm or silly parodies. :D

I'm really tempted to see if I can do a better one now, something that really reflects stone, ice and snow. Something rough and dark with just enough Nordic flesh in there to make it endearing. Speaking of which, doing a Viking grunt/chant is actually easier than it seems. :D

Your video contained images of scanned magazines, which is not tolerated on these forums.
