Skyrim : Special Edition Cost V2

Post » Thu Jul 07, 2016 6:15 pm

So, to continue on from the last http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1604148-skryim-special-edition-cost/, this is to discuss the general issues surrounding the pricing disparity of the SSE between PC and consoles.

Consoles pay $60/£40 for a remastered game with currently no save file transfers from last gen, restricted Mod capabilities and nicer graphics. Mods also disable all Achievements and Trophies from the moment they are activated.

PC gamers (mostly) get it for free (if they bought all the DLC too) and have little incentive to upgrade, according to current feedback.

Personally, I believe that there's multiple better ways to go about this, but all of them revolve around the general concept of fair treatment.

Everyone pays $60/£40 (not popular and highly unlikely), everyone pays $30/£20 (seems a lot better imo) or everyone who purchased all of the content last time get it for free (though raises obvious issues due to proof of purchase for non-digital console games).

There may be other options too, but I'll wait to see what happens there.

The last thread got pretty heated, but eventually started to settle down.

Well, that's my opening post. I'm interested to hear any developments in this matter from either side or Bethesda or Microsoft/Sony. Let's try to reach a consensus.

I'm a console player.I played elderscrolls since oblivion on PS3.I also bought Skyrim twice for PS3.I also purchased Skyrim on pc aswell. As a current ps4 owner I feel the price is justified if the game is 1080 and 60fps.Why?Why 60 fps you say?Because a medium range cpu can run Skyrim at 60fps and because while mods are nice.there not a guarantee because mod authors can lock their work or the mods can simply be too big to run on a console. In my opinion a remaster or special edition at full aaa price needs to have a graphical reason 1080p and a performance reason 60fps to warrant full price. As such because of the lack of transparency of performance.I believe the quote is we're doing our best in all areas of performance for current consoles.Which to me transfers to 1080 and 30fps take it or leave it lol.Without the 60fps I feel it's not worth the full asking price.just my personal opinion.

Get a free trial Amazon Prime account, buy the game with free release day delivery for $47.99.

 It's not much, but it's something. For what you're getting though, still overpriced.

Yeah, not worth it imo.

Besides, I have TONS of games to get through. I'm going to be super-busy for months.

Then, I'm also awaiting news of the NX. It's allegedly being revealed at TGS.

The SSE is a footnote on my list, and it'll stay that way until it's price is less than £20 and we get cross-saves.

Thanks for trying though.

It would be interesting to see the statistics, how many of the Pc Skyrim players have purchased and currently own all the dlc (either separately or via legendary edition). Steamspy doesn't have access to such numbers, but I suppose Bethesda has. Maybe Bethesda knows more than we know (ie 80% of vanilla Skyrim players don't own currently all the dlc's) so the free upgrade may not affect the Pc sales so much. I know irl 3 other guys who played Skyrim intensively and out of us 4, only one has bought the legendary edition, and one has bought Dragonborn and Dawnguard but not Hearthfire.

East Midlands. Leicester to be precise.

Don't live there anymore though.

@Redguard Hashishin : Yeah, I must admit, I have heard that a lot of people skipped on Hearthfire. Of course, they still have 3 months to pay the £4 or whatever it is and get the full $60/£40 SSE in October.

They might've been better off to announce this free deal in September, so they only give people 30 days to make the DLC purchases. I mean, better for them profits-wise. Terrible for the people that miss it though, unless the "free" upgrade period extends past the initial release (and potentially forever). If the latter is true, then that's pretty bad imo. It means almost no PC users will pay the $60/£40 as anyone could just pick up the original Legendary Edition for a fraction of the price and get the SSE completely free at any time.

I mean, that's just terrible business sense, and console users are getting a really harsh deal if that's the case.

I can't see too many PC players opting to go the SSE route (even though it's free). It looks like it's going to be a giant headache switching SKSE to 64-bit (and all of the mods that entails) so I'll just continue to play my heavily modded 32-bit Skyrim which looks beautiful.

One thing you're overlooking. The console edition can be purchased by people who never had the original. To them it's a new game, so full price.

PC users only get the upgrade if they purchased the 32-bit version. Initially, it will do less than the one they have, until mods get ported across, so it will be a downgrade to start with. You want us to pay for a downgrade?

Not only that, for some reason the Legendary Edition isn't available anymore on steam and the expansions are still at full price. Buying everything individually costs 60$ now on steam. Each expansion is now literally more expensive than the base game...

Hey, what's that got to do with it? I'm British and I have no problem with the costing of either edition. I have a problem with the bugginess of many of Bethesda's releases, but not the business model.

The PC version can be purchased by people who never owned the original either. So to them, it would be a new game too. (and they have had a few years now to take advantage of the numerous steam sales to get it even cheaper).

And generally, no. The main point is that they're offering nothing to people who purchased everything on console already. I get the whole reason why PC is getting it for free if they already own the full game and DLC. And we all know the primary reason behind it is because of mods, essentially the main selling point of SSE. Why is it the main selling point? Well, outside of the potential for mods Skyrim has no new content except for the graphical upgrades on a 5 year old game (and for most games that are Remastered, for them to be full price again they are never that old....use GTA V all you want, but that game was 14 months old when the next-gen version was released....TLOU was only a year old. EDIT: Just to expand on the GTA V and TLOU...A LOT of those copies that were sold for those two titles came in the PS4 bundle that released in the Late-Summer/Early Fall of 2014.)

So what are we really paying for? Mod content. User-created mod-content. Paying full price for a game when the only new content is based on potential, and content that wasn't created by Bethesda.

Bethesda got their paid mods.

Yeah, that's true. It may take a while for SkyUI to get ported over to SSE as well. And A lot of mods rely on that for the MCM.

In the short term, SSE will be a huge downgrade for PC users who have a modded game. In the long term it will be an upgrade but only if enough people start modding on the new engine and we get SKSE/SkyUI support. I believe that will happen eventually but it may take some time.

I plan to keep playing my 32 bit version while experimenting with the new version but lots of people may not even bother, at least not in the beginning.

The consensus is, nothing is changing. Bethesda rarely even stalks these forums let alone posts here. Nothing is going to change. This is also more than likely not just a Bethesda issue, Microsoft more than likely has a play in why it cost so much as well.

I was pretty much just about to say all of this.

Thank you for posting this.

@Rick. : Anonymity can help to bridge gaps as well as burn them down. Personally, I don't advertise my nationality so that I can relate to everyone. Very useful when trying to bring people together, I find.

@Imbatman..InSkyrim : "Microsoft more than likely has a play in why it cost so much as well."

Not according to Pete Hines.

Separate issue....I don't want to light a fuse....but I have to raise this real 'pricing' concern I have....

My gut tells me this.......regardless of whats being done now......M$ and almost certainly Sony too.....will.....like it or not.....have us paying for each mod soon enough, and we are being manoeuvred into position to make that become a reality.

It will be like.....you want horse armour mod......ok, thats a buck 50

You want a new riverside house fully loaded.........4 bucks

You want a top custom follower like Inigo...............7 bucks

A whole new area with quests built in.....................15 bucks

Or some such pricing structure......we will see!

Now I don't know if you currently have to pay for FO4 mods.....shrug

But my gut tells me that THIS is their intended golden egg......because over a couple of years the keen gamer who has spent 60 bucks on the initial game might spend another 60 adding and trying new mods.

What money motivated corporation could resist an opportunity like that!

THEN.....the pc mod users will be targeted next.....valve ( I think it was )tried to introduce paid for modding and got kicked off by the mod community at the time didn't they! but once console users are all paying first.....it will be the leverage they need.

This does not have to become a discussion.....but guys, I just had to voice it.....

I fear for all of us

I think this part is unlikely to happen. PC gamers can download mods for free on sites that are not affiliated with one of these companies. In order to make this work Sony or Microsoft would probably have to shut every one of these free sites down first, and I don't see that happening.

For me the mods(why did my spellchecker change mods to kids?) are just a bonus. I'm buying the disc so I continue to play Skyrim. I've wanted this for a long time. If PC players getting a free upgrade means me getting mods for my console version then all that means it's icing on the cake.

One thing that bothers me is that mods are advertised so heavily, but mods can't be guaranteed.mod authors can pull their work or other issues can arise.cough see fallout 4 mods for ps4?Just my op.

Quite honestly I think this and Fallout 4 are tests to set up paid mods for TES VI. Console and PC. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping it won't happen but there's no way in Oblivion I'll hold my breath.
