Skyrim's Spell Creation

Post » Fri Aug 20, 2010 2:52 pm

I know that enchantment is back.

But I didn't see anything about one of my favorite features, spell creation. Has anything definitive been said? Conspicuous in it's absence?

Pete Hines mentioned it on his Twitter, that the 85 spells mentioned in the GI article are spell effects. Don't see why they'd leave individual effects in but remove spell creation.

And don't forget the sort of "intuitive" spell creator of having a spell in each hand.

The only thing that doesn't scare me about it not being mentioned is that they didn't mention torches specifically either. I'm pretty sure torches will be in the game.

How much did Oblivion/Morrowind have?

not that it matters if some get axed. I could see some spell effects going bye bye, like Turn Undead.

Seriously, who used that?

I'm sure there will be more spells.
As I am sure there will be Spell creation

According to what I've found on http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Magical_Effects Oblivion had 82, so pretty much the same amount.Morrowind had more I believe (levitation and teleportation spells).

Oblivion had less spell effects and technically Morrowind had "more" spell effects but many of them weren't unique so Skyrim basically has more spell effects than Oblivion and Morrowind.

do we even know you can combine two different spells? from what i understood from the article, you could combine 2 of the SAME spell to make it more powerful, or have two different spells "equipped" and use them apart.
like how would that combine system work really? what if you combined telekinesis with water walking? lol.. maybe just some effects can be combined though..

Oblivion had 111 (if you count all the summons X and bound armor separately, otherwise it goes down to 81). Morrowind had more then Oblivion (lots of single spell effects were lost for game mechanic reason like Levitation).

We don't know if Skyrim 85 spell effects including separated summons and bound armor effect or not. If it does, well we lost a lots of thing, if it doesn't we actually might have more spell effects then in Oblivion.

As for Turn Undead, it was the same thing as the Demoralize effect (but demoralize doesn't work on undead...).

I understood it to be same type of spell. Hence, you could mix two destruction spells, for example.

Me for one. All the AI based spells are fun. I like to command things, terrorize them, etc. I can only imagine that these types of spells will be more sophisticated.

yes that would make more sense. but its not very interesting if we, say, combine a fireball with an ice bolt, and all we can is a new spell with both effects. i hope they come up with some new nice effects or whatever.
and.. maybe im not thinking clearly, but i cant imagine alot of spell types that could be combined at all

edit: read the article again, and it really says "or put the same spell in both hands, to combine the spells for extraordinary effect". so the same spell sounds alot like the same spell, not just only the same type of spell

81.

But people, don't forget, in the GI issue, it mentions that a single "fire effect" spell can become a flamethrower like spell and more. So, I expect that each of those 85 spells will have multiple branches and different instances.

Erm to have more than 85 premade spells?

Anyways, someone should ask Pete Hines if it's 85 player accessible spell effects or 85 total.

I'd rather spells scale with you so you don't have to worry about making spells.
