Is Skyrim still Sandbox?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 2:52 am

Yeah I know, however it still isnt wise to assume that because it was handled one way in the previous game that it will be handled the same in the next, expect nothing.

Ok, then all the info out on the game should assure you its open world.

The fear of the author are completely unfounded, but the fact it is sliding from a more open character linear development to a more knee jerk development is probably what may have waken the worries.

im starting to get irritated by all this crap, first of all... when im not seeing topics requesting cars and guns, its another topic like this...

do you honestly think bethesda would make a linear TES game?

they''re going for a different feel, and atmosphere, yeah... but thats likely just what we need, do you want to be playing the elder scrolls 20: akaviri adventures... and have it be EXACTLY like morrowind, or daggerfall, in graphics and gameplay, down to every detail?

if they dont experiment, the games will likely get dull.

so far, im very happy with the way skyrim sounds.

also, dragon shouts have always existed, being called "thu'um", its been in the lore, i doubt they came up with it on the spot as a forced gimmick...

...just nevermind, if you wanna believe skyrim is gonna be closed, linear, and crappy, go ahead.

It means that you can travel to any part of the game world yourself via control - i.e. no trailers or cinematic doing it for you.

Seriously people, are we losing our comprehension of basic English terminology now in our skepticism? Get a grip.

This would be like the Fallout 3 expansions who required that you entered a simulation, took a train, boat or was beamed up to a spaceship. SI would probably qualify to.
Bloodmoon for Morrowind would not as you could swim where but Tribunal would.

Yes the numbers of trolls here is far lower than in the pre launch Morrowind forum.

The only linier thing that could ever hold The Elder Scrolls title would be a movie. And I don't see that happening any time soon.

...maybe a board game too, but I could see that being pretty sandboxy as well. Anyway, why is there suddenly two topics basically about this? Are people starting to enter lemming mode due to words such as finishers and perks? And here I thought we'd gotten past that...

I don't see where all of you people are grabbing this whole "the game world wont be open" info from. Nothing points to that, at all.

Indeed. Quite the opposite. I believe there was a quote where a dev (or Todd, can't remember) says something to the effect that they're trying to make it where the player doesn't feel as forced into the main quest as with Oblivion.

There's been a lot of emphasis on being your character in Skyrim. Remember how big a step up for roleplaying Oblivion was from Morrowind? I imagine Skyrim will be another big step up.

I don't see how Oblivion was a step up in regards of roleplaying.
I'm not going to make this an Morrowind vs. Oblivion thread, but I seriously don't see how Oblivion improved Morrowind's roleplaying at all.

Dragon Age had finishing moves, and it was basically an open world (Slightly linear) RPG.

I don't know how you can call Dragon Age an open world. It wasn't really very open at all.

Emn here you're not right, Battlespire actually was quite linear. But of course the main series will never be.

Seriously? This is a joke right?

Why would Bethesda make such a radical change to the very foundation of their franchise? There is no possible reason to believe that to be the case based on any information we've gotten, none.
Finishing moves, dragons etc. Generally more action, how does that in any possible way tell you that the open world will dissapear? They are not mutually exclusive, you know that right?

Ok now I'm concerned. The front page has two threads talking about the loss of an open world. Please can someone tell me what is going on?

Redguard! was linear as well...

But I can sort of see where the OP's coming from... If the devs felt like keeping control of the story, they could make Radiant Story into a system for Railshroding, so even if you try going off the main quest, the main quest still comes to you! But... that would be just stupid when they can instead keep it a sandbox as it was in the past.

I did, right above your post. Assuming the world will be linear based on the fact that the game has finishing moves, dragons and generally more action in it is...I don't even know how to word that without the moderators showing up at my door with sharp objects. There is no rational way to make that connection, this thread is pointless and so are the others like it, all they do is spread worry and rage based on assumptions and ignorance.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I was worried there for a minute. Why are these threads even allowed to remain open when all they do is spread worry?

Ah, it was? My bad, never played that one. :P Anyway, I can't see them making anything now a days that would be linear. It would be...rather strange of them to break off of that.

Don't mention Battlespire, or people will use it for justification of multiplayer.
