Skyrim -The end of the modern RPG

Post » Tue Mar 29, 2011 9:11 pm

How can any RPG title built on the Xbox 360 or PS3 compete with, let alone outmatch, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim?

Skyrim marks the end of an era of gaming as we know it, as I believe it will achieve the epitome of Xbox 360 perfection.

No greater console game can be manufactured until a new console is mass produced. Nobody will buy RPG's anymore because they have Skyrim. What else is there?

This is truly a horrifying accomplishment.

My point is after they make Skyrim they are going to have to release new consoles

Dude. I got four words for you. The Elder Scrolls: VI

Of course we're talking waaaay in the future, but people will still buy RPG's. Those RPG's will be future elder scrolls games lol.

sort of true but not for that reason

The fundamental problem is that game engine developers such as Epic made it clear back in 2006 that their current generation of game engine, Unreal Engine 3.0, used for games like BioShock, Mass Effect and Unreal Tournament 3, is focused mainly on consoles: "With Unreal Engine 3, we designed it to fall in the sweet spot of next generation consoles... we've been really in tune with the next generation consoles this time around". Worse still, they've pointed out more recently that their next game engine is being built specifically for the next generation of consoles, with the PC coming in last in their considerations:
[Unreal Engine 4.0] will exclusively target the next console generation, Microsoft's successor for the Xbox 360, Sony's successor for the Playstation 3 - and if Nintendo ships a machine with similar hardware specs, then that also. PCs will follow after that.
Similarly, Crytek has recently said that CryEngine 3, the next version of what was once a high-end PC-specific gaming engine, will now be targeted for the console, specifically the PlayStation 4 due out in 2011-12.

we already have some hint that the next gen is coming soon so the

I think the OP is stating the obvious although Skyrim won't end other RPG's rather it'll be Zeus on top of Mt. Olympus.

Dark Souls
Final Fantasy Versus XIII
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
Final Fantasy XIII-2

I also still don't have my Kingdom Hearts III, yet.

Skyrim is definitely my most anticipated game, but I've still got my eye set on other future RPGs available on either/both of the two consoles mentioned.

No matter how good the game is, none could ever reach such a perfection as to cause a noticeable ripple.

This is the most confusingly wonderfuly topic I've seen. I have no idea what to make of it. The only way it could have been better is if you added "Purple Monkey Dishwasher" at the end of the rant.

No, he's right, everyone else is wrong, and I'll tell you all exactly why: the world is going to end in 2012, so it really will be the last awesome RPG in existence. Yup. Better enjoy it as much as you can right after it becomes available!

Seriously though, I can't wait for it to come out. Based on my experiences with Oblivion and Fallout, and after seeing the gameplay in motion in the trailer and semi-high-rez screenshots, I can see where this has the potential of being the best damn game I've ever played to date. Who knows what the future will bring afterwards though.. It's too much for my puny brain to comprehend!

Wait, what?

The Xbox 720 is planned for 2015, but with Wii 2 being announced for 2012, that might change.

I'm sad I'm on a console. The texture and graphic mods people will make for this game will be scary sweet. Oh...someday I'll get a really nice computer. Some day...

At any rate, I love the 360 graphics all ready. I'll easily be able to live with what they give me. Fish jumping in the river? Gah, November...it actually has more to it than just snow for me now!

Oh please! If it turns out to be as good as you think it's going to be, and there's certainly no guarantee of that, at the very least it will simply just raise the bar for other games to follow. It certainly won't stop other companies from producing new games, it will give them an incentive to make them better.

I don't think it'll make that big of a splash, but it'll certainly FSU for the competition. I don't like things being simplified for the least common denominator of hardware, but I'm personally a little exited to see what the next generation of consoles will bring, and what the next generation of TES game after Skyrim will look like on them.

It will be significant.
