Is skyrim the right choice?

Post » Sun Oct 24, 2010 9:10 pm

Hi first of all let me say i am a big elderscrolls fan. Ever since i first installed arena i have been hooked on all of bethsdas RPGs.

My first impression of oblivion (like many others) was the entire lack of style and culture, say compared to morrowind. The more i played oblivion i soon come realized why.
Unlike morrowind Cyrodiil is a hub of many nation's, built upon a dead civilization, but inhabited by race's from many corners of tamriel. I do think bethsda had this in mind when they where creating oblivion and actually ended up making it look correct. I do understand many people felt the capital should have more style but this very rarely happens (in real life any way) in societys due to so many diffrent cultures. Better to have none then to favour a pariculer race or culture. And iam pritty sure the imperial nation prefares to absorb culture rather than force theres' upon it. I mean come on this is a nation that made peace with the orcs and now holds them so highly in the Emperor's Legions.

I do believe just by moving outside of Cyrodiil towards the blackmarsh, valenwood or highrock you should see so much more culture and style then you ever would in cyrodiil.
I iam very hopefull that skyrim will be very aesthetically pleasing due to the nordic culture and wind swept frozen tundra. And iam quietly hopefull that bethesda will be giving us something along the lines on bloodmoon.

Bloodmoon is probally my favorite game (expansion pack) ever made and just by moving to skyrim you have sealed the deal for me.

I wouldve liked to see Elsweyr or Black Marsh

Especially Elsweyr, ecause of the different castes of Khajitt, and Black Marsh because of the Hist

I'm very interested in the Nordic culture and I'm looking forward to seeing how Bethesda handle it.

Judging by just the appearance of the armor alone, I am guessing a lot more thought was put into the design of the game.

I had my doubts, since I find Norse style a bit dull, but from the concept art it looks like it's going to be very cool, so I'm happy with it.

It is the right choice in my opinion. Felt more home in Bruman than anywhere else in Cyrodiil.

If Bethesda had designed Cyrodiil according to how it was described in the lore, I'm confident it would have been much more interesting, just read what the pre-Oblivion Pocket Guide to the Empire said about it. While you might justify it not looking the same as the guide describes it, within lore, as being due to things changing since the book was described and because the book was intentionally written to make Cyrodiil sound more impressive than it really is as a source of propaganda. There's even a hand-wave to explain why Cyrodiil isn't jungle anymore, but that doesn't change that if Bethesda had adhered to older lore, Cyrodiil could have been a much more interesting place, and in any case, I'd expect being the capital of a continent spanning Empire to make the culture in Cyrodiil more diverse because cultures from all over the continent are represented but it really isn't reflected in the game. Only two cities in the game are stated to have influences from other provinces in their culture, Bruma is said to show Nordic influences, which I can buy from looking at its archetecture, and if you listen to some of the dialog, they even talk about conflicts between Imperial and Nordic cultures, but I'd say that it really wasn't utilized as well as it could have been, and then there's Cheydinhall, whose archetecture is supposed to show Dunmer influences, but it certainly doesn't look like anything I remember seeing in Morrowind, and while you might argue this is because it's influenced by some style present in mainland Morrowind that isn't represented on Vvardenfell, it's still too similar to the generic psuedo-Medieval look of everything else in the game to really feel like it's representative of any Dunmer culture, considering what we saw of them in Morrowind, and really, the city seems to me like a missed oportunity to appeal to the fan-base's Morrowind nostalgia.

But on Skyrim, it wouldn't have been my first choice of province to set the game in, because Nords have never interested me very much. I'd have rather it be set in Argonia or Elsweyr myself, but this far in development, Bethesda isn't going to suddenly change the province the game is set in, so complaining about it won't change anything, and I'm sure Bethesda can still craft an interesting world out of Skyrm if they put enough creative thought into it, and even if they fail to do so, the genericness of the world didn't stop me from playing Oblivion, so there's no reason I'd let it start with Skyrim.

Slyrim would have been my second, with my first being Black Marsh. Skyrim is still a great choice and can't wait to explore the land.

I was hoping TES 5 would have been the Summerset Isles or Elsweyr, but, oh well :) ... Skyrim will probably be like Solstheim, only a lot more populated and a little livelier (like Bruma in OB).

I disagree OP. The reason people liked Oblivion less than other TES games wasn't because Cyrodill was too similar to historical civilizations. The reason is because the overall feel of the game seemed shallow and lacking. I don't need the entire environment to look alien and different for me to appreciate the game like Morrowind. I just need a fulfilling experience, knowing I can do whatever I want, and that mentality can last me hundreds of hours just exploring the game. I got that with Morrowind because of how unpredicitable and fun it was. The longevity for Oblivion wasn't the same due to extensive level scaling (creatures and weapons), cookie cutter dungeons with no adventuring incentive, lack of diverse quests (obviously VO had a part in this), redundant Oblivion gates with no reward, and overall lack of the feeling of a living, breathing world. Aside from the main quest, factions, Knights of the Nine, and Shivering Isles, there just really wasn't anything worth doing in Oblivion in my opinion. This was obviously different with Morrowind as there was just a lot more choice and options players could choose to do. Now we also have to consider how much was probably cut from Oblivion since BGS only had 6 months to work with the hardware. This would explain why it felt so shallow, and I am expecting Skyrim to definitely be a much more fulfilling game since BGS won't have issues with next gen and this game has been in development on their new engine for years and looks great. The culture of Skyrim will definitely add an interesting flare to the game as well, especially with the mix of dragons.

I loved Morrowind but i loved the bloodmoon expansion much more! . The mainquest was like morrowind epic!! I really liked Hircine, even better than Dagoth Ur. And Thirsk was a so nice place!! I loved every tomb, every quest and every creature on solstheim, new weapons, raven rock and the list goes on and on. And bring back blizzards, not so annoying like ashstorms. hehe. The point is Skyrim will be perfect!!! atleast for me. The setting I think will be much darker and dangerous than Oblivion. All the new stuff their new engine can handle, realistic snow that covers the ground, rock's and trees when it falls... well epic! add werewolves and everything will be perfect!!

It's not even the snow that gets me, it's the probable lack of fantastic structures. Look at the cantons of Vivec, or the glorious hallowed halls of the Dwemer. I hope I'm proven wrong, and Beth implements buildings truly worthy of a high fantasy game, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

It is. However, the Orcs are from the Wrothgarian and Dragon Tail mountains. The former being in High Rock and the latter being in Hammerfell.

Edit* I forgot to answer the question. YES, I think Skyrim was the right choice. Morrowind was great because the Dunmer are my favorite race and now with Skyrim we get to visit my second favorite race's homeland. I couldn't be happier. :celebration:
