Skyrim on the PC

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 3:58 am

I'm just wondering what it would take to run it on my PC, just for reference my computer svckS for playing games, example: I buy FO3, getting all excited to mod it, download the modding tool, download the game, game starts up freezes when I try to start a new game. Yes, it's that bad. What would I need to do to it to get Skyrim(or any recent Bethesda game) to run on it?
PC specs:
Processor- subscore-4.3
Memory(RAM)-subscore-4.9
Graphics-subscore-4.2
Gaming graphics-subscore-4.0
Primary hard disc-subscore-5.9
Overall-4.0

We can't figure out your specs from your Windows Experience Index scores.

What are your actual graphics card, CPU, memory etc.?

Umm, you may have to tell me where those are, because honestly, I have no clue.

If you don't know then you might want to stick with consoles.

Use Google to find out the specs, I'm sure it will help more than anyone on this forum.

Then come back with the specs, and we can help.

hang in there and don't give up so easily - it is not too hard to figure out what you currently have.

most likely, if you bought your PC within the past few years, simply upgrading your graphics card and memory will probably result in a huge improvement.

Post a dxdiag.
XP: Go to Start->run, type “dxdiag” and hit enter. Click the Save All Information button near the bottom right. This will save a Dxdiag.txt in C:\ by default. Then open the dxdiag.txt and copy/paste the information into your post.

VISTA/Windows 7: Go to Start->Search, type “dxdiag” and hit enter, click the Save All Information button near the bottom right. This will save a Dxdiag.txt in C:\ by default. Then open the dxdiag.txt and copy/paste the information into your post.

(Thanks to Starforce9 for making it possible to simply copy/paste this procedure.)

BTW, is this a laptop or a desktop system? If it's a laptop you're out of luck as those can't be upgraded at all. And you really should get into the habit of learning what makes your computer tick. It's not like a television where one size fits all. If you don't even know what your basic specs are then you take a real risk of wasting a bunch of money on programs you can't even run.

Heres the problem. Most people that don't have any idea what there computer specs are, are not computer savy. Its like asking someone about there car, so you got a V6 turbo bla bla(I don't know beans about cars) and the person is like un its a honda I don't know. Same thing when a pc person replys with "I got a dell".

I don't mean this as a knock on the op, and I could be wrong. Have you ever upgraded your pc, put in new parts? Dealt with issues on your pc on a software or hardware level? Its good to leaan how to deal with issue on your pc, how to install stuff, keep you pc running well, etc. And its a must for a good gaming experience.

O.K., great, found it, saved it, opened it, now how much of it do you need, because there is A LOT of writing there.

You don't need to be a dike about it, or use "consoles" as subtly derogatory. Not everyone knows this [censored].

your processor and Ram seem a bit low, and it doesn't show what graphics card you have

currently the cut off point for graphics cards are the geforece 8800 so get anything higher than that and you should be good, and dont buy a double slotted card if you dont have 2 slots to put it in, I learn that the hard way

Post the bit from the display tab, there's no info about your graphics card in that part.

Although judging by what you've posted so far I'd recommend a serious upgrade is on the cards if you want to be able to play new games coming out over the next couple of years and get them to run decently - your CPU is going to struggle and you could do with more RAM for a good gaming experience - and that's before I know any details about your graphics card.

You need to get more ram, a new processor and a decent graphics card. Might cost you like $300-350 or so, not sure about current prices. And more if you want top of the line, and that assumes you pc mobo can handle it.

Yeah basically all your components are not great for modern gaming, time to look at upgrading or a new build if you can afford it. Is there a tech forum on these boards? (can't remember, but if there is go there and ask for recommendations)

Edit to add: Oh and don't give up when I use terms like "new build", you can put together a PC yourself at a much reduced cost than buying one already pre-built, even with the most basic of technical skills - if you are old enough to remember meccano kits, it's a bit like that only even more straightforward.

Is there someone I could give it to who could upgrade it? Because I know next to nothing about the internal working of a PC and even if I did get the parts, I most likely wouldn't know how to put them in.

Or

Should I just get a new one?

What is your budget for a new PC? You can build a Skyrim-capable rig for about 300-500$.

Here's a link to a guide on building computers (Which is fairly simple if you invest some time into it): http://techreport.com/articles.x/13671

And the people on this forum will help you with part selection, technical errors, ect.: http://techreport.com/forums/

Just go on the forums and post your budget and what you want to do with the computer, and someone will make you a parts list pretty quickly. Hell, it might even be me.

Good luck! I hope to see you in the wonderful world of PC gaming soon!

EDIT: Btw, I was in your boat a few years ago. I had a [censored] PC and almost no computer knowledge, but wanted to mod Bethesda games. Morrowind at the time, I think. Anyways, I found the TechReport website; the people on the forums were very supportive and helpful, and I was able to build the thing a few months later, no problems whatsoever.

No problem! Good luck with your build, mate.

EDIT: also, in the "System Builders Anonymous" section of the forum, read the Stickies before posting. They have a lot of useful information.
