Skyrim Theme voted into Classic FM's Hall Of Fame

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 12:25 am

Hello all,
So sorry to crash the forum, but I thought I'd let you know that Classic FM's Hall Of Fame - the world's biggest poll of classical music - has a brand new entry at number 238. Yes, it's Jeremy Soule's theme to Skyrim, and we've just played it on air (in case some of you don't know, Classic FM is the UK's only classical music radio station, broadcasting to 5.3million people a week).

It's fantastic news, and it's nice to welcome the world of video games to Classic FM and the Hall Of Fame. The full chart is still being counted down, but the top 300 (with the Skyrim theme!) as it stands is on our website now (classicfm dot com)

Best wishes,

Owen

Morrowind theme song deserves to be there instead of Skyrim's. Oblivion and Skyrim theme song is recycled variations of MW masterpiece.

True. Although I like the choir in the Skyrim theme, MW's is a masterpiece among all game music.

It's a shame that Skyrim's resounding success overshadowed Bethesda's previous games, masterpieces as they may be. First-time TES players have no idea that the magnificient Skyrim theme was based on a song written years ago, one that indeed deserves a place in the Hall of Fame.

It's nice to see Henryk Górecki up there, though :) Should be higher!

Well, Morrowind's music is also in Skyrim, so new TES players are still hearing the same themes that were originally praised a decade ago. If you watch the "Making of Skyrim," there are some nice details about how the Skyrim theme was adapted/created from the original themes.

Don't get me wrong, Skyrim's soundtrack is great, as is the main theme. It's just weird to put it in the Hall of Fame instead of the original piece. Then again, the new version has a very different feel to it, so maybe they thought it's more "classical" or something.

I think it cheapens it to say "recycled". It's a theme that is used repeatedly to create a sense of unity in the series but is expanded and altered to create a unique identity for the original title. The way you put it you make it sound like a cheap knockoff, when that's certainly not the case any more than Daggerfall is a cheap knockoff of Arena.

And one from Morrowind

Anyways, Skyrim compounds on the previous games like Oblivion did. Oblivion has bits of Morrowind's theme in it, and Skyrim has bits of both, with its own original bits (the dovahkiin bit) as well. Morrowind's theme is now pretty much accepted as the TES theme now though.
