Skyrim - too good to be true?

Post » Tue Jul 19, 2011 3:22 pm

I just realized: what we've heard so far makes this sound almost, well, too good to be true.

It sounds flat out amszing, but do you think Skyrim will live up to the hype?

I doubt there will be fires burning down houses, the environment so dynamic, and an economy even existing at all. Everything else I believe. The AI's have been possible for many years. See The Sims games for example.

I just had to break it to my mate in the pub tonight that skyrim will not be multi-player, it was like telling a five year old there is no such thing as Santa Claus. Personally I don't really play on-line that much anyway so I don't care but he seemed quite bothered.

it might fall victim to the duke nukem game disease that came out it just couldn't live up to the hype but bethesda hasn't let down before so it could be as good as its being made out to be we just have to wait and see for our selves and come up with our own conclusions

Regarding the hype, I of course felt that there was "too much awesomeness" in store for Skyrim.
As far as delivery goes, it would have to feel significantly improved over Oblivion to hit anywhere near that mark.

There IS a lot of hype, but even If I was given a game that only had the confirmed features I'd be happy. The finished package will be nothing short of groundbreaking I'm sure.

Yes all the features they've shown are all in fact, flat out lies. I mean its like they promised trees to grow in real ti- Oh wait that's another game.

I've seen nothing said that wasn't 100% achievable and most likely going to be true.

You know, at this point I would be happy with Oblivion 2. But a lot of the stuff sounds much better, but hearing about something and seeing it for yourself are two different things entirely. We'll just have to wait until 11/11/11.

The game doesn't sound too good to be true. Something that's too good to be true has no flaws... and Skyrim has a lot of flaws.

Will it live upto the hype of being a great game and probably the best game of the year? Most likely.
Will it live upto the hype of being the best TES game yet? Probably not for a lot of fans.
Will it live upto the hype of being the best RPG of all time? Very unlikely. In fact, there's no chance.

Come to think of it there really isn't all that much hype. Sure it came out of E3 with tons of accolades but I've yet to see a commercial for it on tv.

Best RPG of all Time? There never has, or ever will be, such a thing.

Will it be the beat morrowwind the perfect TES game? I mean it was perfect wasn't it? What it wasn't? /sadface-nostalgic

Will it win game of the year? Most likely. Does it mean that it was the best game of this year? No that's an award and as such is just an opinion on a pedestal.

Will it be loved as a fantastic game by many people, and hated by people who were never going to buy it anyway? Yes.

Why all the Morrowind overlove? A lot of what I wish was in Oblivion was in Morrowind but Morrowind was no where near a perfect game lmao it had its fair share of flaws.

It's what we call a flawed gem (there are too many of those out there).

Best RPG of all Time? There never has, or ever will be, such a thing.

Maybe I should've phrased that differently...

Will it live upto the hype of being one of the best RPGs of all time? Very unlikey.

Will it be the beat morrowwind the perfect TES game? I mean it was perfect wasn't it? What it wasn't? /sadface-nostalgic

Noone said Morrowind was perfect. Far from it. Skyrim is clearly improving upon some of the flaws of both Morrowind and Oblivion, but it's also cutting out some important things that made those games great, while adding gimmicky features that would be more at home in the Fable series than the TES series. In general, it's going down that dark road known as 'streamlining and accessibility'. At the end of that road aren't any great RPGs - just corpses. Failures of games that made the same mistake.

Will it be loved as a fantastic game by many people, and hated by people who were never going to buy it anyway? Yes.

That's the way it should be.

Better to be absolutely loved by fans, and hated by everyone else who wouldn't buy it anyway because they don't like open-world RPGs, than to be bought by everyone and thought of as being 'pretty good' by everyone.

I don't think anything that we've heard about the game so far seems to good to be true. That Spanish article thats being discussed at the moment, well, thats another matter, but nothing I've heard from Bethesda so far doesn't sound completely achievable. Bethesda has learnt there lessons from the promotion of Oblivion quite well.

As for whether its going to be the best RPG game ever/best TES game ever, thats purely a matter of opinion on the behalf of the player.

I think I've got a pretty good idea of what it's going to be and more importantly, what it's NOT going to be.
So, it's definitely not over-hyped.

Bethesda has this reputation of being over-ambitious and then not being able to deliver what they wanted to, in the end releasing an innovative but a half-assed product.

But so far they did a very good job presenting the game because what they did to improve it sounds all very down to earth and achievable.
Nothing Tod said so far has made me think *yeah right, and your mother is the pope*.

I hope it won't be another Fable, with plenty of hype but devoid of depth or content.

I've seen Morrowind being referred to as perfect or "nearly perfect" countless times. Morrowind was as flawed a game as oblivion was.

And as for Skyrim being one of the best RPGs of all time, that has yet to be seen so a comment one way or the other is pointless. I think it will, as for me, oblivion is one of the best RPGs of all time, and morrowind the same. I think people will still be playing Skyrim when the next TES game comes out, and thus by nature its success, is as good as any other RPG. Most RPGs don't get a years worth of play.

I edited my post as you were replying to include:

"Skyrim is clearly improving upon some of the flaws of both Morrowind and Oblivion, but it's also cutting out some important things that made those games great, while adding gimmicky features that would be more at home in the Fable series than the TES series. I want to believe Skyrim will be the best TES game yet, but it's been one thing after another that's made me go: " :nope:" or ""

Regardless, Skyrim is easily my most anticipated game of 2011, and i'm certain i'll really enjoy it for what it is.

Will I enjoy Skyrim? Yes.

They could "Streamline" all they want, I would still love it. Some streamlining is actually a good thing. The problem is where you do it so much, that you basically water the game down. We'll see if Beth has crossed that line. So far, from what I've seen, I would say they have not.

If the new Spanish article is even half correct, then Beth is heading in the right direction.

I mean, the stuff mentioned in the article about AI, they've had super smart AI for years now. They actually had to tone down the AI for Oblivion, because they were "too" smart. (Why beth? Why?)

Overall, I will enjoy Skyrim for years. I know this for a fact. A few years after Skyrim is released, probably when we're all hyped up about Fallout 4, THAT's when I'm gonna judge Skyrim as a whole, and compare it to Morrowind/Oblivion.

Why do you feel that way?

I think my expectations were way too high, and now they've sunk down to reality.

I loved Morrowind and Oblivion so much despite their flaws, and really thought Skyrim was going to be better than both - taking all the great features of both, improving upon the flaws of both, and making a new game in a new and interesting setting that was going to be the best open-world RPG to date. What I didn't forsee was all the additions I don't like, such as children, finisher moves, the 3D map, marriages, perks, etc. and all the changes and removals of things that were important to me in past TES games. It also didn't cross my mind that Bethesda would even think to go down the streamlining and accessibility route, given the extremely negative reaction other games have received recently for doing the same.

Whatever though. I'm looking forward to Skyrim, and i'm just going to enjoy it for what it is. If I expect it to be better than past TES games, i'll probably be disappointed. If I expect it not to be, I can only be right or pleasantly surprised.
