Skyrim Trail

Could this be the way to win over anti-Fast Travel hardcoe? Sound off below!

Travel distance could be measured with a progress bar. As it moves along you could get little notifications, and options on how to respond. Examples:

[Enemy type] nearby: Engage (exits Fast Travel), Sneak By, Go Around
[Ingredient type] nearby: Explore (exits Fast Travel), Ignore
[Dungeon type] nearby: Explore, Ignore
[NPC name / profession] nearby: Greet (exits Fast Travel), Ignore, Sneak Up (exits Fast Travel)
[Village/Farm/Estate name] nearby: Explore, Ignore
Interesting landmark: Explore, Ignore
Blizzard approaching: Seek Shelter (exits fast travel), Continue (50% weakness to disease for two days)

NOTES:

- You have to watch a loading screen when you Fast Travel anyway! Why not make it a little more fun?

- Using Morrowind style travel such as a ship, or wagon would bypass the mini-game.

- A travel system like this would enable Skyrim to be hundreds of miles across! Travel between cities could be measured in days and weeks! The thousands of square miles of wilderness would have to be randomly generated of course.

Can someone please explain what an Oregon Trail-style minigame would be like?

This is similar to the random encounter feature Bioware did with Dragon Age. To this day, that's the only part of the game I dislike. If I'm fast travelling somewhere it's because I want to get to my destination unhindered. If I wanted a challenge, I would walk.

You could have option to sneak by or go around.

Okay, voted that it might be fun.
I still prefer the Morrowind-way of fast travel though. <_<

I wouldn't mind this. I chose "might be fun." It should be optional though for those who just want instantaneous fast travel (regardless of how immersion breaking that is for me personally; but then, I don't have to use it. :)) In addition to this, I still want some form of transit. A carriage. A rickshaw. Something. Not mandatory. Just as an option for those who won't want their fast travel to be clicking on a map.

I suppose; but if they did this I would at least ask them to amend the name from fast travel.

I believe a feature like this would boil the essence of Skyrim into an unneccissary mini-game. All of these things I can do in the main game by exploring. I fast travel to get away from those things. It adds a step that didn't need to exist (in my mind at least).

I would rather them add different mounts as an alternative to fast travel. Such as riding a dragon. Something inutitive that I couldn't get from the main game experience. Most importantly, something that I wouldn't simply ignore.

*edited for clarity.

Sounds like it might be fun the first few times, I agree with Vamphaery: carriage, rickshaw, giant bug--something.

Morrowind style travel such as a ship, or wagon could bypass the mini-game. Costs $$$ though.

Oregon Trail FTW.

Not only does Oregon generally kick ass, but the game is one of my all time favorites from elementary school.

I thought the system of travel in Dragon Age was quite good. I wouldn't mind something like it in Skyrim, although I'm not really sure how well that system would fit into an Elder Scrolls game.

I didn't mind it, but I would much prefer points like that to be fixed on the map instead of random encounters. If I'm fast travelling somewhere, I'd rather not be interrupted. Dragon Age didn't call it fast travel, but that's basically what it was. I guess in the long run; I still love that game to death and the details don't really matter as much as the overall product.

I like the three ways of travel; on foot, on a horse (mount), or fast travel. I would say leave the random encounters to the foot and horse methods, and leave the quick travel the way it was intended: fast.

I would love a large map, and my preference would be to travel using public transportation, like a ship or wagon. Another option is to give us different types of mounts, and maybe there is a large bird that you can use to fly. I know some people are not crazy about a dragon mount, so a large dinosour type bird. Of course, this assuming that we are talking about a large map, like Just Cuase.

I also like an idea I read of Fast Travel just being used to go from city to city.

I don't like the idea presented in this post since like a previous poster said, it was my least favorite part of Dragon Origins.

I mentioned that you could just choose to ignore or evade everything, or bypass the mini-game by using other travel methods.

Oregon Trail was fun in school, but it would be way more bad-ass to describe this as a Fallout 2 means of fast travel.

As you moved across the map you would see the progress of times and run into random encounters with people or places which you could deal with as you chose depending on various skill levels.

I would be open to the idea, but I also really like how they implemented OB and FO3's fast travel. I think mounts or a carriage/ stilt stryder system would be a much more intuitive feature.

I think I would have to see something like this in action to be sold on it.
