Skyrim Is Trying to Kill Me

Post » Tue Sep 01, 2015 12:45 am

I have not enjoyed Skyrim as much as I did Oblivion, but just when I finally have the game modded to where it could approach the love affair I carried on for 5 years with Oblivion, Skyrim is trying to frustrate me to death with constant crashes and screen lockups. I have attempted to capture the main issues below, along with pertinent background and diagnostic information:

1. When it crashes to desktop, I can sometimes restart from my last save and move past the location where the crash occurred, but other times the crash just keeps replicating at or about the same point. Crashes, however, are merely annoying and not the main issue.

2. My real frustration comes when the game just freezes. When that happens, I have to restart the computer - nothing else works, to include using task manager to kill the game. Game freezes repeat themselves almost 100% of the time; i.e., if I restart my game and go back to where the screen froze up before, it will freeze up again, and again, and again.....

3. Most of the issues occur when I am wandering around above ground, outside the city cells - I sometimes encounter problems in dungeons, but rarely inside city walls.

4. That said, It is very hard for me to approach cities without causing the game to crash. I have the same problem with some crypts and towns, but have not had an issue approaching any caves. I was able to walk to and through Riverwood, but my game crashes whenever I approach Solitude or Riften.

5. All of my mods are loaded using either Wrye Bash or a subscription through Steam.

6. I have used the latest version for TES5 Edit to clean all of my mods.

7. I am using the latest version of LOOT to set my load order and it confirms that all of my mods are clean.

8. I am using the latest version of SKSE to launch my game via the SKSE button at the bottom of my wrye bash screen.

9. Before starting my current game, I deleted all of my other saved games and started a new one with my new mod build. I noticed my initial save game in Helgen file size was 7.5MB jafter just 4 mins and 27 secs of game play. At 60 hrs, it has jumped up to 13.3MB.

10. I think the majority of the problems are tied to scripts associated with the mod "Sands of Time". I am running version 14.5b of that mod using the Spartan preset. It will sometimes provide alert messages letting you know that you are about to get attacked by a mob of bandits, or draugr or whatever. As those messages start popping up on the screen, I can use the COC command to get away and continue playing elsewhere, I have also been able to run out of the area very quickly and sometimes get away before the screen freezes, but it is rare - normally only the console command can get me far enough away fast enough to avoid the game freezing.

11. Active mod list follows:

I didn't go through the mod list but if the CTDs are not especially mod related then one possibility to reduce the amount of crashes is to add these lines into the skse.ini (found in data/skse):

[General]
ClearInvalidRegistrations=1
[Memory]
DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB=512
ScrapHeapSizeMB=256
Also using ENBoost could help.

It seems like about 99% of the people who complain of chronic crashing, freezing, etc have lots and lots of mods that increase spawns. Obviously, you're no exception. That puts a lot of pressure on the game....you have Immersive Creatures & the Monster Mod, and I don't think I've ever run into someone trying to run both of those at once. Add Immersive Patrols, Sands of Time (which personally I don't trust very much....just get a not-terribly-polished vibe from it), Prides of Skyrim, whatever those "extra people" esps are....to me, you're basically begging your game to crash.

I'd pick ONE monster mod and ditch Sands of Time, see how that works for you and go from there.

You seem to have severe save bloat, so I would dump the mod that is causing it, especially if that mod has not been updated more recently than the latest unofficial patches.

I also completely agree with the "Spawn Points Theory". Crashing at the same place every single time you approach strongly suggests that there are more spawn points there than the system can handle. You have to wonder why Bethesda themselves removed so much Civil War content and other content, while mods that add spawn points can cause crashes.

I was unable to use War Zones as well as Realistic Animals and Predators, for example, as every time I approached a certain point across the river from Whiterun, the vanilla spawn points clashed with a Realistic Animal spawn point and a War Zones spawn point and the game would just dump me to desktop in protest.

Also, using ferocious ini tweaks can work well, but can also cause problems like random CTDs, crashes when opening containers or looting animal corpses etc, and these also seem to occur at the same place. With one set of saves I always had to skirt around a certain point outside one town to avoid crashing.

Where do the CTDs/freezes occur? Someone might be able to tell you something with that information.

One thing to mention is, that all of your unofficial patches are outdated, so downloading the newest versions would be a start (and that said, have also a look at this thread: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1527952-unofficial-skyrim-legendary-edition-patch-usleep/)

1. I absolutely appreciate your taking the time to respond and I understand your comments.

2. I have been running the Immersive Creatures and Monster Mod together for a couple of years. I used a bashed patch, of course, and they do not seem to be the source of the problem, although I think the increased number of spawning scripts with those two plus SOT and a few others is definitely factoring into the problem. (BTW - there are several threads about running the two together and, generally speaking, it does not seem to be a problem, provided you are using a bashed patch. Even the mods twoo authors seem to agree on this point.)

3, I do tend to think that Sands of Time is the culprit and I am trying several of the SOT Optimization tips they recommend. Unfortunately, it is the SOT ambushes and waves of attacks that I enjoy most about the game and the only reason it is starting to approach Oblivion level satisfaction levels with me - apart from that whole trying to frustrate me to death thing.

4. Again, though, I really appreciate your taking the time to post a well-reasoned response.

Cheers

The crashes occur randomly across the world space, but particularly when I approach populated areas.

I have updated and cleaned all of my unofficial patches - thanks for the heads up.

I agree with you on the severe save bloat, but do not know how to tell which mod(s) is/are causing it. I miss the fix that Wrye had for the Oblivion Save Game bloat.

Thanks for the response - I will chase down ideas now (through research) for the save bloat issue.

Don't forget these settings should go into SKSE.ini, not Skyrim's inis.

Right - I actually have these entries in my SKSE.ini file. Did not remember doing it until I opened the file up and saw them in there, along with this one:

On a related note, since the main point of the OP seems to have been addressed: what is "save bloat," how does one identify, fix, prevent, and generally deal with it? Any links to a really good "article" on it?

Save Bloat is when your saved games get filled with enormous amounts of crap and the size of the files gets ridiculously huge.

When you start a new game, the first save at Helgen can be a few MB.

After a few levels and dozens of saves it can be 10 MB.

After playing for many, many hours and saving hundreds or thousands of times, it can be 20 MB.

This is normal as you have explored more of the game, opened more maps, quests and containers, killed things and left clutter lying around.

But if you save goes from 4 MB to 12 MB to 25 MB to 45 MB to 75 MB in just a few hours, you have severe save bloat. I forget the precise technical details, actually, but it can be things like infinitely looping script calls, items not being cleared up when a cell respawns etc.

I know people who still collect every little piece of clutter that drops so they can sell it or dump it in a respawning barrel so it gets deleted, just in case.

That sounds super un-fun and tedious, not to mention unnecessary. I didn't spy any of the usual save bloat suspects (Airborne Birds, etc.) in the OP's mod list, but there must be something.

Of course, I tend to start new characters so often that even if I had a save bloat problem (I don't), it probably wouldn't have long enough to affect me.

I did a little research and found the following link for the Skyrim Save Cleaner file: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/31724/? which I used to reduce my Save Game file size from 13.3 MB down to 12.2 MB. If your game file seems too big, you might want to give that a try.

You don't have to do it. Neither did I, but some people enjoy different play styles and hoarding all clutter is one of them.

I never had any trouble with that at all. There was one particular script in one particular version that was alleged to cause save bloat, but it never affected me.

So your input into this thread is of rather limited value?

Interesting stuff. My "Clean Save" that I sometimes use to start a new game (generated with an uber clean version of vanilla and with Helgen completed) is at about 4.6MB. That jumps up to 4.8 after loading with my full load list (about 80 mods) but without doing much at all and staying in the vicinity of Helgen. Then after using RaceMenu to make a new toon, 5.8.

The original "clean save" was at #308 . . . not sure why; I think about a year ago before my old machine croaked I had followed the Mod Organizer developers guide to create a perfectly clean and patched vanilla Skyrim install and I must have had other saves in the folder when I created that one.

I'm presently up to save 415 and it is up to 7.8MB. Interestingly though, in the interim of those ~100 saves, it went to ~9.1MB (at a save #385) but has since hovered in the 7.8 range, generally going up between each save but occasionally going down.

What I take from this is: I must not be having save bloat!

I finally seem to have arrived at a very nice and stable load list that suits my tastes *knock on wood*

ADDIT: and btw, why would clutter bloat a save file? My understanding was that after a certain time period (10 days for vanilla??) everything in a cell resets (if it is not a town or owned cell). So all those non MQ locations, the landscape, etc., they just go back to their default configurations after a certain period of time right?

This is partly why I decided it was perfectly legit to use the "Fast Respawn (well, middling fast at 144 hours)" mod = any partially cleared areas that do not have active quest or ownership status to prevent them from resetting will reset sooner rather than later.
