Skyrim turned out to be shallow...

But... that's where depth comes in. You know, the world...

Not really. Not enough to make up for the pitfalls of the rest of the game.

But people don't have to quantify "11/10 BEST GAME OF ALL TIME NO CONTEST". He shouldn't have to, either.

I agree with him, though. How people think that this game has any more depth than Oblivion is beyond me.

The world is freaking fantastic, though. I wish they had the same type of quality in every other facet of the game. Luckily, I think the world is the hardest part for modders to fix. :)

When you praise a game it's really obvious that you is praising the whole thing or the thing as a whole. But when you is complaining about a specific subject (Shallowness in this case) you need arguments or examples to proof your point, if you don't provide neither arguments or examples, your "complain" seems shallow and bland.

And this is a Discussion Forum, without arguments or examples, how are we supposed to discuss? The way that it is this is just a random complain-thread.
I can agree that some main quest-lines are very shallow, but you know what? I don't have any clue if the OP is talking about this or the lack of spears.

I don't agree, trough, that the game as a whole is shallow. I loved the way that the Lore was used, the way that we are introduced to the Daedric Princes and the amazing dungeons with backgrounds and whole quest-lines.

Playing this ( and the past ES games ) on a PC, i expected more. Expected an RPG and not a new age conzolized rpg. Feels too DA2 ish. Almost unfinished in a sense.
Its almost like the way WOW went with cataclysm. They dumbed it down.

Do some people like this? I am sure most the console players do. This is not what i expected for an ES game though. Not what i expected for a game in 2011 either.

I feel like Bethesda could've spent another year on this game to make the faction quest lines as deep as Oblivion or have a sense of progression and accomplishment like Morrowind.

They must've been so fixated on making that 11.11.11 marketing date, that they had to make some cut backs in the depth department.

Quests and writing are shallow, many game mechanics are weak (marriage system, lack of spelltypes, no ability to lock doors, combat is still floaty, etc.), and NPCs are still lacking in depth and personality.

It's shallow because of the breadth of the world, though, so I forgive many of the trespasses. Really needed another 6 months of development time though.

Agreed.

I love them, but sometimes I wish we hadn't mods. Maybe that way some people would be less arrogant and won't mislead their opinions as facts.

This is what I was looking for. There is a lack of progression. A lack of meaning in the game for my character. I fully expected guilds with the guild ranks again. Being recognized for what guild I was in, how high or low a member of the guild, etc.

Combat system seems 1990ish to me. With NPC models taken full damage regardless of where they are hit. When fighting in melee, it just feels like I am swinging my sword around. If there was no enemy health bar, half the time i wouldn't have any clue i was actually hitting my target. Of if there are multiples its even hard to pin point 1 target. Seems very floatish i guess. Like my guy is just swinging at air.

Even fallout had that system. Why didnt this game have anything like that?

Would that Bioware could come in and give Bethesda about 20-30 NPCs for flavour in Skyrim, to add to the 100s of generic ones. In a perfect world. Bioware does much wrong especially in DA2, but generally their NPCs are fascinating and fun to learn about (eg, not shallow).

Well, I see plenty of depth, far more than Oblivion had. I'm not alone, based on the posts on the forums.

Perhaps it's just a matter of experiences? For example, people brought up the civil war. Well, I have run into squads of Legionnaires and Stormcloaks, as well as groups of both who have been killed and are being scavenged. Never saw stuff like that in prior TES games. Much more dynamic.

I tend to focus on exploration rather than pursuing specific factions. I care about the world, not the factions. The factions are backdrop, just like reading a summary of the Oblivion Crisis. Playing through the MQ for Oblivion is not any more enjoyable for me than simply reading the summary. Exploring Cyrodiil is enjoyable, though.

Well they're in cohorts with Obsidian now and I think Obsidian has made more interesting characters than Bioware has lately in my opinion.

All of the NPCs are shallow. I would love for Bethesda to focus more on NPCs in the future. They should be number one of the top priorities in an RPG.

I find the original post Shallow and Pedantic.

I agree Shallow and Pedantic.

OT: I dont know what it means for Skyrim to be shallow. As far as the complaints are going that Ive seen thus far, I dont agree with many of them. Its mostly just people being trolling perfectionists. It doesnt feel shallow if you take your time, playing an Elder Scrolls game just for the sake of saying you beat the MQ or got all the gamerscore and blah blah blah, well, that takes everything away from the overall experience. I think that Beth did a very good job with the world in the game. And the NPCs feel alive for a change. The faction questlines are fun IMO, albeit, once you do them once, they seem like they fly by considering you know what to do and where to go. the Civil War questlines, now that Ive done both, didnt last as long as I was expecting, but regardless of going there doing this a few times in a row, it still felt like I was actually participating in the Civil War. I havent gone through the main quest all the way, but Ive enjoyed it all the way through as far as Ive gone. All the side quests and misc objectives are keeping me busy enough.

Id like to complain like everyone else, but I dont have any REAL complaints about the game

the warring faction quest is just like regular daily dungeon run, except this time you're accompanied by 5 soldiers and got a military order

goddamit beth! where's the epic battle. even when I stormed Windhelm, there was only like 10 legionnaire vs 10 stromcloaks per wave

Factions, as well as the Main Quest are pretty much the only things I was disappointed with. They did feel very short, seemed to lack depth to their stories (perhaps the main quest not so much, but certainly a little), and had fairly underwhelming endings.

I'm not sure what happened but when I stormed Windhelm I ended up in a 30 minute fight, I thing I was right near a spawn point but I couldn't pass it so the enemy kept respawning. It was awesome!

Yep, the Stormcloak uprising was extremely shallow. There is an entire vault's worth of quest gold possibilities to support the two factions, but instead we got a very simplified, very shallow layer, almost as an afterthought. There's a war going on, and yet we almost never get to experience it. Where is it happening? Who's fighting? No one, apparently.

Arch mage questline is also embarrassingly shallow. 4 quests and bam, here's your wizard college. If only Harry Potter had been so lucky.
Haha, I haven't installed the game yet(still sitting in the box in my living room) but I've been watching the gameplay videos on youtube. And what you say is pretty much true... unfortunately.
Your username definitely holds true to the tone of your debate, especially the last statement. Very nice. :D

The who game is "shallow" you don't get any sort of feeling of depth for your character, or the quests. I mean being dragonborn is a joke, no one cares. Want some depth to questing take a look at the swtor beta....

This thread is really not going well, since most of the posts are about... the opening post. Which has dearth of opinion on it. Sorry you thought the game was shallow but there are literally DOZENS of threads on the first few pages of this forum that talk in great detail about perceived flaws, personal likes and dislikes about the game in great and lively detail. Use those threads.

And Bethesda has said they will release the construction set. They will decide when that is, until then, people should stop demanding it "naow". It's the forum equivilent of a kid repeating "are we there yet/ Are we there yet?" on a long car ride. :)
