Skyrim is watered down and a poor RPG

Post » Fri May 31, 2013 2:33 am

Skyrim is watered down, with a shoddy inventory system, customization all but gone, and no strategy to building a character. It's built to cater to the masses and succeeds at this goal very well by being very popular.

Nothing about Skyrim was "ground-breaking." It was Oblivion with better graphics, less charm and uniqueness, and worse writing. Basically it was the difference between Madden 12 and Madden 13, which are popular every year.

Gaming is in a slump because games are rewarded for never changing.

Discuss.

Do you want a medal for the most complaint threads about skyrim.

That's nice. I'll gladly embrace the new generation of watered-down, casual, not-really-RPGs if Skyrim is an indication of why they're like.

Despite the patches, I love this game, just wish I had got it on PC.

Clearly non of that is true or you wouldn't be posting on a forum about a game that got released over a year ago.

really skyrim lacks charm and uniqueness of oblivion? haha not even gonna bother with that one as its a matter of taste, but skyrim has tons of depth added with perks. Actually the whole leveling system was revamped, so i don't know what you mean by it doesn't change

Nay Varlet! :stare:

Skyrim may have its faults which be not few but it is THE BEST FRPG ever created and I have played many. You are given unlimited freedom to wander, slay and RP and its vistas be beautiful to behold. It is home to the foulest of denizens, the Daedra which spin crafty webs with which to ensnare the unwary. The Playerborn is given choice after choice which may damn or exalt them at final breath and Sovngarde be the final rest for a faithful Nord.

To the depths of Oblivion with ye! (Joke)

Thank you Napoleon for that commentary.

Yeah, Skyrim definitely was a failure wasnt it?

It was, and is, possibly the greatest RPG game EVER. Possibly the greatest GAME ever. I guess you're the type who want 12 sided die in your video games hey Napoleon? Things need to evolve, and Skyrim is the most advanced and evolved role playing game EVER. I own both Morrowing and Oblivion, but could not get into either of them. I tried and tried and just couldnt, but when Skyrim came along, it actually lured me away from the love of my life - MW2 and became my all time favorite game EVER.

I don't personally agree that Skyrim is exactly like oblivion, there are lots of different things that set it apart from oblivion. However, I do agree that customization is pretty much gone, and the depthness of the RPG is much less then it was in Morrowind, or even oblivion.

And I also agree that Oblivion and skyrim are more akin then Oblivion and Morrowind, but that's also cus they are both on the same gen of systems.

The perks themselves are very shallow, and most are just filler perks. But if they brought back something similar to the attributes from the old ones, with a different system of them increasing along side the perk system, it can be really good for the next elder scrolls game.

I do find it weird that they would remove old skills by saying they're redundant, but then bringing back new skills and making them just as redundant, if not more so. Like pickpocket and sneak all broken up by themselves making them 2 less effective skills, and then they merge some of the magic skills and weapon skills together. It seems there wasn't really a method to their madness with skyrim.

The lockpick tree is completely useless to spend a perk on in any case whatsoever, and lots of other perks are just there as a requirement to get a better perk.

Overall, the perk system seems cool and complex, but after playing through a few times you quickly realize the shallowness of it, like theres something missing. It's the attributes, IMO. They would supplement the perks really well.

And even though they said the attributes are still in game, but split among perks, it isn't true. There's nothing that mimics strength, or speed. The only thing close to strength is getting perks in one handed or two handed to do more damage with said weapon. Well if my character had amazing brute strength and always used one handed weapons and never used a two handed weapon, he should still be able to pick up a two handed weapon and be able to do more damage then say a mage who has never used a weapon in his entire life, but in skyrim that isn't the case.

Walks all over brightly coloured lunatic land Oblivion for style, just severely lacking in the faction quests and journal/UI departments.

And you know, you are right. It's not an isometric or top down, party based, stat heavy, turn-based combat game with fixed enemy levels and hand placed everything, difficult encounters and top notch storytelling. It, does, however, imo, do what it does, which is adventure with rpg elements in a gorgeously art-directed open world, very, very well. Nevermind, there's always Tides to look forward to, or you could even check [censored] for their list of incline.

[Oh, my, even their name is censored. You know, the guys who think Fallout 1 is all a bit modern.]

It is so Horrid that immediately upon fixing my freezing issue from Patch 1.9 abandoned that worthy FRPG Oblivion. Oh the shame of it!

Skyrim's siren call is too great, its haunting graphics and gameplay too fierce to resist! Once again Oblivion is the Bride's Maid, mourning in the distance for its lost love.

There is SOOOOOOO much more depth in Skyrim than the other ES games. I think folks like the OP think it lacks because the game doesnt give them "classes" to choose from and instead, lets US the gaming public choose EXACTLY how we want to create our characters. This alone makes Skyrim so great because really can create whatever type of character I can imagine.
