Skyrim will not have Cloth Simulation at all?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 12:48 am

Well, i can say i′m not too much optimistic with the possible to have cloth simulations (to react with wind and movements).

Just anolysing some screenshots, and someones like this (* Image Removed *) made me think that cloth simulation (that would be a joy in my oppinion) will not be present in the new engine =(

Any thoughts?

*** EDIT ***
Sorry, i removed the image because it was a scan (sorry about that)... So, i refered the image that show a finish move with a sword... i′ve looked at the loincloth and it′s seens too flat to me...

It's hard for me to tell from screenshots, but perhaps somebody who is an expert on the technology could give their opinion. If there isn't cloth simulation of any sort, I'll be slightly dissapointed...

Looking at the other screenshots from the GI mag, that same length of clothe seems to be weighted on his leg. There are two shots both showing his right leg forward and that piece of fur is deforming precisely the same way. Kind of hard to explain without the screens to show it. So yeah, I think clothe physics may have eluded us again.

What does it add to the gameplay?

(Can't cut a sail or tapestry and swing from it, nor pick up a sheet and entangle enemies; If you could... I'd be all for it.)

I've yet to see a game anyway where cloth is simulated everywhere, and not only for curtains and especially flowing wardrobes.

Could it be possible that they just hadn't implemented cloth physics at the time that shot was taken? A long shot, I know... but robes and cloaks would benefit from this so much!

Yeah, i've yet to see anyone do anything meaningfull with it other than eye candy, so while it would be neat, I don't really care.

In http://www.gameinformer.com/cfs-filesystemfile.ashx/__key/CommunityServer-Components-ImageFileViewer/CommunityServer-Components-SiteFiles-imagefeed-featured-bethesda-elderscrolls-elderscrollsv/dragonshoutfeatured.jpg_2D00_610x0.jpg screenshot it seems his loincloth is moving to the right. Either due to wind or because he shifted. That leads me to believe we might have some cloth simulation.

It would be nice, but does it really add anything to the experience? I would fully support it if shields actually splintered and armor would bend/warp/rust/etc (just overall a more realistic and interactive physics engine), but with these features not being in the game, it's just eye candy. As long as the game looks better (as well as armor and clothing), I'm fine with that.

How cool is that armor by the way. Back when i was pleading for someone with modelling experience to add some Barbaric armor into Oblivion, this is the kind of thing I wanted, more or less anyway, it could do without the chestplate for that real Conan feel :P But yeah, even if cloth isn't simulated, I think I'll be very happy with this games armor regardless.

Yep. This screen shot hasn't been released by GI on the website (aside from those of us with magazines). You may want to remove that screen shot asap.

I wouldn't mind if they have something like this type of animation but it's not high on my priority list.

While I'm all for it, it can be hard to do right without your cloak getting caught in a wall or moving object.
Although... Red Dead Redemption did this right with their duster coats etc.

That's really not a good screen to see it from, since both are wearing hard leather armor, not loose cloth.

Are we even allowed to link that?

Morrie, from Dragon Quest VIII had enough cloth simulation for the entire game and plenty leftover for every RPG to come in the future.

It makes the world feel more alive. Adding to the general joy of an open-world RPG.

Actually that is one of the screen shot I'm referring to. Now if we can only get the shot of the same guy from the "Here There Be Dragons" page of the mag I can point out that the clothe and the leg are pretty much on the same position as your screen shot.
