Skyrim. Will it be the Game of the Year?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 5:03 am

Is there a unified "GOTY" competition like the Oscars, held by a professional association in the gaming industry? If these awards are given by all the obscure magazines around the world it doesn't mean so much.

There is the videogame awards, the one were Skyrim was first annouced. I have never watch it, but that must be the biggest of them all when it comes to videogame awards.

I'd like The Witcher 2 to win some accolades in testament to self-styled PC gaming master race RPG exclusives, but it's assured that Skyrim will win quite a few awards. We're talking about Bethesda - they haven't had a commercial flop since Redguard and Battlespire.

I believe that TES is actually more recognized and popular franchise.
Every TES game is like some-kind of monolith in gaming industry.
Skyrim will be no different , maybe it won't do no crazy ambitious stuff , but at very least it will significantly improve over what's already is done.

I really don't see Mass Effect 3 topping Skyrim. Coming from a fan of both series, Mass Effect 3 is going to be carrying much of the weight of ME2, and the story, for all it's worth, is going to be predictable. Dragon Age 2, on the other hand, has a good chance because it offers a fresh new experience along with Witcher 2, Portal 2, Uncharted 3, LA Noire. My gut tells me that Skyrim will win, and I usually trust my gut...Regardless, this GOTY is going to be all about fresh new experiences in 2011...which gets rid of games like Mass Effect and Uncharted. Sure they're going to be top class, but does anyone expect anything new coming out of them?

Add that to the fact that Elder Scrolls games have a very "triumphant" feel to them. Whenever an Elder Scrolls game is released, the rest of the gaming world sneezes.

As a publisher or as a designer? I don't think any TES has gotten that. The first two were too old for those awards anyway. Only fallout 3 has.

Your right it was only FO3.

Not that it is the only criteria, but TES games have typically broken records for total sales. I don't think either ME game did that. From the track record of TES games, I'd say that it has a better shot at a GOTY award than ME3.

That said, there are so many different GOTY awards from different sites and communities that it is all pretty irrelevant in the end.

We'll see. It is an obvious contender already, but it is up against games like L.A. Noire (my bet), Mass Effect 3 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution

ME3 probably won't be released this year, the schedule is just too tight imo.I see ME3 being delayed into 2012 and it's going to be an heavyweight.ME2 won a ton of game of the year award, just about as much as Uncharted 2...

The competition will be fierce no doubt,so all will depend on execution and if the improvement are enough to push TES V ahead of the contenders.I can't see it winning an overall game of the year award over contenders like Uncharted 3,The last guardian,L.A Noire,Crysis 2,Little big planet 2,etc. (you folks know these games will be nominated). It will compete for rpg of the year against Bioware (Dragon age 2,Mass effect 3?),Blizzard (Diablo 3),CD Projekt RED (the Witcher 2) and the wild card is if From software can release Project dark which is the successor of Demon's soul.

Forget game of the year, just winning rpg of the year will be hard enough.Especially if Bioware does release Dragon Age 2 and Mass effect 3.I didn't even mention Two World 2 which seems like a vast improvement over the first, even if there's still flaws to take care of.

Skyrim will undoubtably win A "Game of the Year" award from someone. That's a certainty. The question is from who and how many in total.

Obviously I assume each and every one of you is both aware of Skyrim's chances of success in this pursuit and desire that pursuit to be fulfilled. But do not discredit the competition. There are a LOT of big titles coming out this year, and some of the biggest names are hitting at the very end. The biggest I'm following are Mass Effect 3, Uncharted 3 and of course The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim; all three of these are releasing in November and December, and they're guaranteed to be heavy competitors for the GOTY awards from the big name groups. But then there's Dead Space 2 that just came out, L.A. Noire that has received a lot of attention, the return of Duke Nukem: Forever which has been (infamously) in production for over 13 years, and the Nintendo 3DS remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, one of the most popular video games of all time.

It's going to be a war. So be ready.

This.

GOTY award means absolutely nothing.

I wouldn't say absolutely nothing.... Close to it though..

But yes like others said, Skyrim will be GOTY and so will many other games.

And I agree that Duke Nukem Forever will win at least one GOTY year award, have you seen the new trailer :hubbahubba:

Competition is hard this year. Notable competitors: Guild Wars 2, The Witcher 2, Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 3, Crysis 2, Deus Ex 3, Arkham City. Maybe others too. We'll see, I guess.

For me personally? Well, there's only one other game that I'm looking forward to as much as Skyrim, and that's DX: Human Revolution, and considering how much more linear that probably is, yeah, Skyrim.

There is no 'the GOTY'. All sorts of of gaming magazines/websites can hand out GOTY awards. So yeah, I can pretty much guarantee you that Skyrim will win at least one of those.

Exactly although I do admit it will be a very competing year. just to name a few: DA2, ME3, The Witcher 2, inFamous 2, Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, Gears of War 3, The Last Guardian, LA Noire...it's gonna be a s*it year for my wallet :P

They will have tough competitors like the forthcoming RPG'S Dragon Age and The Witcher 2, it will be interesting to see what Bethie comes up with. I could only wish for less FPS and more RPG allied to their ability to create a living 3d world.

It's anybody's guess  It's like a game of who blinks first. Screw something up and forget being at the top. Besides, asking this here is pointless, since the ranking will be decided by crytics and the masses, not the handful of core fans. We're biased :shocking:

Skyrim will be GOTY if not Skyrim then Mass Effect 3 and if not that then Uncharted 3 and if not that I would say Crysis 2. I would fail English if I wrote that LOL
