Skyrim. Will it be the Game of the Year? : V

Okay, 2011 is going to be a HUGE year in gaming. Sequels, Trilogy finishers and just all round Epic games are announced to come out this year.

Does Skyrim stand a chance to get to the number one spot?

I think it will be certainly in the top 10 games of the year. But, will it trump other Awesome Games such as the long awaited Mass Effect 3, Uncharted 3, Kill Zone 3, Red Faction Armageddon, and even the new Legend of Zelda game.

Is Skyrim going to reach the top, or will it fall short to another game?

There is no 'the GOTY'. All sorts of of gaming magazines/websites can hand out GOTY awards. So yeah, I can pretty much guarantee you that Skyrim will win at least one of those.

I am definitely looking forward to Skyrim the MOST at this point, but yes, there will be plenty of amazing games this year. Honestly, if BioWare nails it with Dragon Age II like they did with ME2, DAII might be taking GOTY. I'm having a feeling that DAII will be pretty amazing. BioWare in general is going to dominate this year. DAII, ME3, and Star Wars: TOR.

Bulletstorm looks awesome, as well, and we can't forget about Gears of War 3.

Overall, like I said, I'm looking forward to Skyrim the most. But... SO MANY GAMES! I don't know if it'll be taking GOTY.

The last time an ES game didn't get GOTY was 1996, Bethesda's been pumping outs GOTY's for over a decade now, granted they come out very slowly, but they are deserving of the title to be sure.

As others I don't think Game of the Year is one of the metrics they judge success by for these games, more like the combination of the major game reviewers + some of the top-10 lists that the bigger sites run.

I think Elder Scrolls Skyrim will definitely be in the top 10, but as much as I love Skyrim and Elder Scrolls, I don't think it has any chance of beating Rage in sales. If Carmak delivers, I think Rage will sweep the field for top sales overall. Skyrim may get best RPG and other fine awards, I don't think there will be any shortage of accolades for Bethesda.

Is there a unified "GOTY" competition like the Oscars, held by a professional association in the gaming industry? If these awards are given by all the obscure magazines around the world it doesn't mean so much.

Deus Ex 3, Portal 2, RAGE, L.A. Noire. Unless they're hiding more stuff up their sleeve than a magician in a tuxedo I can't see it winning any GOTY awards. Too much like "Oblivion with some improvements" and not enough "Brand new crazy awesome!"

I just hope it's good enough that some people think it is.

Yep, it's called the Developer's Choice Awards and Bethesda has three overall game of the year distinctions from that group. If all of the developers in the industry vote it game of the year then that is exactly what it is.

I thought the complete opposite. The gfx, art, combat, and perk system looks amazing new and different compared to Oblivion.

Like Morrowind, Oblivion, FO3, i do believe this will get many many GOTY awards. I think Portal2, Witcher2, DX3, and DiabloIII might be its only GOTY competition.

I didn't add ME3 and DragonAge2 because they seem like very quickly made rehash sequels compared to the games mentioned above.

That was a funny joke! The most innovative games usually get on the GOTY lists. If Skyrim delivers on the new combat system and all the other features Howard has been speaking of, than I can't imagine V being too far from the top! I think ME3 will certainly be among the top contenders, but frankly I can't imagine it getting much better than ME2 was.

Also, guars. Please?

Some of the recent news has been a little disappointing, but even taking that into account, Skyrim is going to stomp all of these other RPGs into the bloody snow with a big nordic boot.

1. Bethesda Game Studios/Bethesda Software developer/publisher
2. The Elder Scrolls label/game
3. I suspect the console market will do surprising well in terms of profit/copies sold

As a publisher or as a designer? I don't think any TES has gotten that. The first two were too old for those awards anyway. Only fallout 3 has.

Dont know, it depends.
On PS3 game of the year will be Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception,maybe Skyrim will be GOTY on PC/Xbox 360.

I don't like it. It's a popularity contest.

This is a fantastic year for gaming. Skyrim, DAII, ME3, DNF, etc. One of the greatest hauls in recent memory.

All TES have gotten awards. This will be no different. Especially today with all those GOTY awards. Heck, even Arcania got one.
