Skyrim will be $60 on the PC

Post » Tue Mar 30, 2010 9:59 pm

I still don't understand. Why do they even make PC games cheaper? How can you complain that you are getting the same price as everyone else?

I have always wonderd why PC games were $10 less than normal priced games like for the PS3, why is that? I mean I sometimes find it unfair since you all get so much more than us in terms of Mods but than again you have to upgrade your computers every so often

They don't have to pay licencing fees to Sony/MS/Nintendo. Even selling it for $10 less they make more profit selling a copy for PC.

Because PC games used to be the normal games. It's not the PC games that for some strange reason are cheaper, it's the console games that have always been more expensive for some strange reason. And now that's backfiring at the PC? I don't see a reason why. I would NOT mind a general price increase, I think the work put into a game would be worth a lot more than 50$. I pay twice that money for visiting events that last maybe a weekend and took only a few months of preparation, while I pay so little for something that entertains me for (in the best case) years and had several years of development time. I'd pay more, and if it really costs 60$ (or the equivalent of that in Euros) on PC I'll also pay that.

Also, you're still looking at it the wrong way. PC games have been $50 for quite a while, even while Xbox and PS2 games were $50. Then, after the next generation of consoles, the prices went up $10.

Thats what I thought as well, I remember PS2 games being $50 than all of a sudden they jacked up the price when the new gen systems came out

They're already making their money off of everything else, the $10 just seems like something they'd try to get away with because console games are $60, but they don't actually GET that extra $10, that goes to MS/Sony.

And honestly, let's be realistic, if you think that Oblivion is the GREATEST GAME EVER RELAEZEED ZOMGZZ and that gamesas is the GREETAST GAEM DEVELOPERZ 4EVA then you need a reality check. Oblivion wasn't that great-it was a fast main quest with very little, if any depth. It couldn't speak for much of any choices and consequences, and that's just a few issues I had with it. It was a good game, but nowhere near a great game.

Fallout 3 was terrible, simply put. Don't get all mad at me because you think that main quests that are simple and straight forward make good games. I like a challenge, not a "where's my daddy?! OH THERE HE IS! *dies*" kind of game. Bethesda isn't the greatest game developer, and if their past two games speak to the future, then Skyrim won't be worth $60 for any platform.

And believe me, I hope it is. I REALLY do. But it's going to be a game that I won't buy on the first day, regardless of how much I love the TES series. Current industry trends show HUGE game boasting, then the product ends up being mediocre, and the companies are laughing heartily as you overpay for their decent game. Bethesda isn't some magical exception to the rule. I mean, all they've done is release a vague announcement trailer and you're all completely convinced that Skyrim will be the best game ever to be made for all time.

So I'm going to wait and see, read tons of reviews after 11/11/11, to make sure that it's okay for me to spend $60 (even $50, if that turns out to be the price) on a game.

And just so you can ALL understand, $50 has been an industry standard for a decade at least. I wasn't happy when console games shot up that high, and I'm not happy now. No, the economy is not very good, which is why $10 matters quite a bit to me. So really, grow up and learn how much a dollar is worth before you tell me all the random prices you'd pay out of mommy and daddy's wallet for a TES game, which is obviously world-class.

2'nd that.

First of all, I have a HUGE issue with PC games being $60. Its not because I think PC gamers are better and deserve a discount or anything... but because there is little reason for PC games to be $60. MS and Sony charge a royalty fee for games sold on their systems, and that's why console games are generally $10 more then PC games. Also, seldom mentioned is the fact that console development kits are extremely expensive. So it simply cost more to develop a console game then it does a PC game, and if people want to make the "inflation argument", then the price of console games should go up to $70 as well. The fact is money hungry Activisioin was able to make a smash hit with Modern Warfare 2 even with a price tag of $60 on the PC, so now everyone else is jumping on the bandwagon...

And honestly, let's be realistic, if you think that Oblivion is the GREATEST GAME EVER RELAEZEED ZOMGZZ and that gamesas is the GREETAST GAEM DEVELOPERZ 4EVA then you need a reality check. I totally agree with you that Oblivion was far from a super great game, or that Bethesda isn't the greatest developer around. Its quest design was terrible/repetitive, and its gameplay was extremely watered down. Not to mention its level design lacked character or creativity. It had a ton of issues... but with that said, I still put hundreds of hours into it, and more then got my monies worth. To me its not that its a big deal to spend an extra $10 because its still worth it... its the principle that I'm tiered of very wealthy developers/publishers constantly trying to nickle and dime their fanbase.

I wouldn't call Fallout 3 terrible. It was probably Bethesdas best game to be honest. Sure the main story blew, and wasn't worth doing until Broken Steel came out... but the atmoshpere and feel of the game were unmatched. It still suffered many of the issues Oblivion did with poor quest and location design... but it wasn't a terrible game. Again it svcked up hundreds of hours of my time, and any game that does that is worth $50/60. However, if Bethesda wants to get greedy two can play that game and I'll wait 2 months till Steam has a sale and buy Skyrim then... thats all.

Why do most ppl think that if people buy video games that means they are taking money from their mother's and father's pocket? You have no proof that EVERY user does this, I mean I don't have a job right but than again I get paid money for how good I clean the house every Saturday, I have to clean 3 stories each Saturday, ALONE and depending on how it looks I could make $20 or have it go down to $10, I can't really complain about this since I am getting free room and board since I live here but even than the money I get is FROM their wallets that they make at their jobs yet they give it to me for working on the house every weekend so I don't know if you want to call that getting money from their wallets or not... :/

Adjusted for inflation, $50 in 2000 was almost exactly $60 in 2009, so to be honest that seems only fair. What's not fair is the fact that like with all other titles the Steam price will be €60, since neither publishers nor Valve realise that $1 != €1

Yeah, and some other games were 30 bucks a couple of year back. This is not inflation. Just look at everything else, books are sold for nearly as much as more than a decade ago. You can't see the inflation after 2 or 3 years, this is ridiculous.

Actually PC games were mostly $40 until a few years ago (around the time this gen consoles came out). Hell some PC games are STILL $40 at launch.

And I respect your opinion, as it is more rational than most have been on this thread. It's fine if you don't agree with me, as long as it isn't due to ignorance or arrogance.

As far as Fallout goes, I found the setting to be interesting at first, but it got old relatively quickly, and I couldn't really get into the game as much as I did Oblivion. Obsidian was the better choice of developer on Fallout games, showing New Vegas as my proof.

AAA game, IIRC, have been $50 for the better part of the decade. Yeah, some are cheaper, but their not like... flagship titles or anything.

And honestly, they're making a LOT of money from charging $50, since they still make a profit after selling it for $20.

Just my opinion but I for some reason disliked NV, I was excited for it, even so far as to preorder the LE version from GS and I sold it the next week O_O I really just didn't enjoy it alot for some reason idk why

I do mainly play on consoles, but that's just ridiculous. It's not their fault you couldn't care less to be ripped off by Microsoft or Sony (especially Microsoft) with overpriced accessories, over priced DLC, over priced xbox live and overpriced games. As much as I like playing on consoles, console players are getting ripped off, so, so much compared to pc gamers it's incredible. It's like you're saying you're at last can see PC gamers be ripped off as much as you because you feel jealous or something.

For one thing games are larger and have longer deveopment time and more development cost, and have only gone up a bit in price over a decade.

What games are you talking about that were $30 "a couple of year back" some games are still sold for $30 or $40.

I don't feel like repeating myself, but if you're interested in an answer, I talked about this one or two pages back. Companies are not trying to keep up with their expenses and income, they're trying to always make more money - thus "keeping up" with their expenses and income, but in a disproportionate way, never actually keeping up since they always get more and more, it's like keeping up with their income increase. or something.

Yes specially 360 users get ripped off the most imho, I hate it alot but we all deal with it, hell besides games it doesn't effect me to much because I make sure not to break my products but some have (my play and charge kit comes to mind) and I never pay for gold myself (lovely friends seem to give me gold every once and again) so maybe I am just lucky but ts not like you can't get buy without buying Gold unless you are addicted to online gaming which I don't see the point since I have been playing none-MP games all my life because of money issues on my end

History. Seriously, look at video games then, and look at them now. It has come from some nerdy people programming in their spare time to one of the most rewarding entertainment industry. The video game industry is a LOT more profitable than the music industry for example which is dying. It's all tied to the stock market, companies need to please everyone, to make more and more money, that's the most important thing, otherwise they'll loose the support from the market, what they need to fund the increasingly expensive game development. And just look at how consoles are important now, and which companies dominate the market... Microsoft, Sony. Multi-billionaire companies which make a lot of money in other domains too, not just video game. For them it's just a way to make more, and more money. That's the way the world spins, money, greed. The evidence is everywhere. It has never been about respecting the consumers, it has always been about trying to get the most out of them without them noticing anything, or too much. Look how often with Sony tvs (albeit of good quality) too often you only pay for the name. Look everywhere, clothes, it costs cents or just a couple of bucks to manufacture, yet you may pay them 1000% its price to make. Food... it's insane. Cds cost cents to manufacture and often artists only get a handful of cents per sale, yet some are sold for 25 bucks. Why do you think the music industry is dying? It's not because of piracy, it's because of insane, disproportionate prices. Why do you think video game companies need to invest in anti piracy programs? Because since there's no real competition as far as prices and services go, they don't want people to tell them they're ripping them off and get it free. Of course some people would always try to get everything free, but there's still a lot of people like me who like to buy cds but download a lot because they'd never see the light of day nor feel like getting broke for an occupation. Even then, we may buy used cds but it doesn't help the industry. Again, why do companies invest in trying to make people buy less used games from Gamestop? Because they know a lot of people are unwilling to dish out that much for new games, but they don't want to put reasonable prices.

So in other words, you don't have evidence.

You wrote a lot of words, but little of it has any relevance, most of it isn't even true.

What do you think is a reasonable price for a game that costs millions to make? Sure it only costs a few dollars to stamp the disc and make the packaging, but that's not what you're paying for.

I don't even understand what you hoped to accomplish by comparing it to the music industry.

I'm sure it's just Gamestop pulling numbers out of their ass.

But on the topic of the price hike of PC games that may become trendy due to COD Black Ops doing it, it's really not something you people should be encouraging. "It's only $10!" With that attitude, in ten years from now, it'll be more like "it's only $100!". That is all.

Also realize that there's a reason why PC games are/were $10 cheaper than their console counterparts - console games have licensing fees. There is no such fee with a PC release. If PC games go up to $60, the next logical step is $70 console games, which is really getting into absurd territory - as if it wasn't already bad enough, especially with the average length of gameplay being inversely proportional with the gradual increase in price (BioShock 2 would take you 6 hours at most and it costs $60).

Ha, I love the whole "Back in my day a game was $X, therefore games should be $X for the rest of eternity".

I'm buying the CE, $80, $100, or whatever. Why? Because it gives me more entertainment value than anything else I could possibly buy.

It was only a matter of time before PC game prices caught up with the consoles. Just wait till the next generation of consoles are released, your going to be paying 800-1200$ for it at release and it's games will be 80-100$.

Considering the size and scope of Elder Scrolls games compared to most others, they are a good deal for the price. Are they the "best" deal around? I don't know or care. My gaming funds, needs, and desires are pretty limited, and Bethesda has been filling those very nicely since I'd been introduced to them, so I have no complaints. I plan on buying the Collector's Edition and I hope it's as nice or better in some way(s) than the Fallout New Vegas CE.
