Skyrim wins PCGamer's #1 PC game of all time

Post » Wed Jul 24, 2013 9:10 am

It's useless to try and give "Best of All Time" awards -- figure as PCs capabilities change so do the games that run on them so the newer games are always going to be seen as better than the classics -- For example If Morrowind had been created to run on the PC specs that Skyrim was designed for or Skyrim had been designed to run on the specs that Morrowind had to deal with they both would have been totally different games - so there is no way to make a comparison between them for all time best.

Its not a top 100 RPGs list, it's a top 100 PC games list

Which one left more impact on gaming? Fallout 3. Fallout New Vegas was a large expansion pack with slightly better RPG mechanics...

Is it that PC gamer list?

That list was a joke.

Skyrim's UI alone negates it from being No.1 of all time.

Quite indeed.

Well, someone just made a list claiming "best of all time" (although it's obviously just subjective). I sure there will be a few critics on it.

I sorry.

But last post in this thread before I get off lunch... I have to get this out of my head. I can't help but wonder... Dragon Age 2 just got robbed.

I remember a certain review claiming it the "best RPG of the decade." Oooohhh yeah, THE DECADE. What happened, PC Gamer? That person who wrote that review.. *sigh*. Oh he/she must be wondering what the hell is going on right now.

Thanks for the list. It was interesting read but I don't think the list to be top 100. There are plenty of games I haven't even heard about but then some classics which are good and interesting enough to still play today aren't there. Anyone else wonder why for example Age of Empires II and Jagged Alliance 2 aren't on the list?

I'm happy to see the Vampire Bloodlines: The masquerade is on the list, but surely it is better than some of the games above it.

Terrible choice really. Skyrim does nothing remarkably well nor is it original or groundbreaking in any way. It's a large but shallow time killing game. I could see it in the bottom 50/100 maybe but #1 is a joke.

I'm assuming there's an article in the magazine that goes along with this list, and at least tries to explain the reasoning behind which games were included on the list, and where they were ranked. It's not posted on PC Gamer's website, unless it's behind a subscription paywall. Without that, it's one person's completely arbitrary and subjective opinion about which games belong on the list and where.

I won't disagree with it, but if Skyrim is so good then why is Morrowind (and even Oblivion) stuck behind so many more.. mediocre games?

It's the novelty and mass popularity I guess, they somehow feel obliged to favor the newest one in the series. But these games made by BGS share so many design principles and gameplay tools that one could swap anytime Morrowind with Skyrim as a personal preference... in the end I think they rewarded the TES experience more than Skyrim as an individual chapter, and in this case I can only agree, TES is the best game experience on PC ;) ever!

The last time I saw them do this was back in 2008. . . Maybe I've just not been paying PCGamer enough attention! I still love that little 2008 book that came with the mag though. :D

Yeah, it's a great game...but not the best PC game of all time. I'd be more tempted to award that title to Minecraft than Skyrim. Minecraft's less glitchy, for one.

Not to mention the PC version is a 360 port.

I'm biased because I still think Morrowind is a better experience overall. It's more cohesive and more aligned to my personal sensibilities, despite its comparatively poor combat, magic and stealth core. At the end of the day, the exploration makes up for those shortcomings in spades, and the perfect atmosphere and mechanical interplay just seal the deal.

I'd put Skyrim in the Top5 for sure though. Its hard to really pin down a spot beyond my "Top" though, because my retrospective tends to change slightly depending on what I've come to appreciate-loathe with slowly broadening gaming horizons.

Congrats Skyrim! You're my #1 too :touched:

lol at the hipsters who say its overrated. Ever since 11.11.11 Skyrim has been in the top sellers on steam. Let's see any other game in that PCGamers list be so popular this far past launch.

Speaking of undeserving games, what the hell is dishonored doing in #40? It's good but not that good.

This.

And honestly, I can think of quite a of few PC games that I have enjoyed more and can do more with them. On top of that, the article writers nowadays for the big publications always seem to be in the back pocket of somebody. These lists anymore are the equivalent of an obscure recognition from a regional book readers club.

For me It was a tough choice between Skyrim and GTA SA but Skyrim is definitely the better of the two.

I know opinions are opinions but stating something like that can be grounds to fed to deathclaws.

There's absolutely nothing that Fallout 3 did better than New Vegas.

You're kidding, right?

What have you been talking so much about on these forums, then with so many thousands of fosts, I wonder, if the game is so shallow to you?

Which game should have been named #1, then?
