I'm quite pleased with Skyrim but it's the second best game I played this year. The Witcher 2 is my personal GOTY. That said, Skyrim will last me for much longer and gives better value for money.

Deserved, I don't negate the award because of mere bugs, even if they are annoying.
Bethesda's games aren't your average 8 - 14 hour experience, it's a huge undertaking developing this kind of game, doing it bug-free is impossible.

Everything I was going to say. Skyrim cannot be compared to something else, just like the other TES games. You can only compare it with previous ones, because "The Elder Scrolls" is a seperate category in gaming.

Absolutely. It's the best game of the last 5 years, no other game comes close for me, and it will probably be my favorite game for years to come.
I'm on the xbox 360, and haven't encountered any bugs or glitches. I can't think of another game released in the last few years that has given me over 100 hours of entertainment, and is likely to provide me hundreds more. Together with Morrowind it's in my top 5 list of best games ever.

Does Skyrim deserve game of the year? Yes, without a doubt. But there are also many other games equally deserving and depending on where you stand, even more. Will it win game of the year? I doubt it, as amazing and deserving as it is, it has been much maligned for 'game breaking' glitches and major slowdown for PS3 users. I think this will count heavily against it, in a year where there were other amazing games that while maybe no where near as ambitious, were technically much more consistent.

[Edit]
My bad, it did win. Cheers all round.

Yes.

But honestly, I couldn't care less. I don't need any GOTY awards to tell whether a game is great or not, just like I don't need any grammy awards to tell whether a movie is great or not.

Uhm... Yes I can... Since it's "trying" to be an RPG I can compare it to any other RPG I please.
Since it's a sandbox I can compare it to any other sandbox I please.
Since it's a combat based game I can compare it's balance to any other game I please.

And as an RPG it's too limited and flawed.
As a sandbox it's great.
And as a combat based game it's balance is flawed as well with severe issues and people going "well it's optional!"

Now, maybe it cannot be compared "as a whole" to any other game... Except Fallout 3 and New Vegas. >_>

Absolutely not. There are far better games that have been released WAY before Skyrim and it hasn't been a month since it has been released. It's the end of year 2011 so obviously, people will vote for something that is fresh in their mind... Yeah...

I voted no.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Skyrim, nice gameplay, good graphics but there are a few glitches that just mess the game up. For one, (not a glitch) the mage gameplay is basicly unplayable, there are so many threads discussing why spells are weak, major errors in the gameplay, and comparing mages with other classes to show how weak they are.
There are many other glitches too, some minor, and some major. I know it's hard to manage all of Skyrim, but come on Bethesda, Skyrim could have gotten an 11/10.

My second most played character is an Altmer pure mage. It isn't always easy (especially on master), sometimes it is enjoyably very hard but unplayable? It is so far from unplayable I can't think of a measure of distance that would accurately describe how far it is. But it would be big.

Huh, that's a lot of "no" votes. (I kind of dislike people not appreciating 3 years of hard work)

Portal 2 as best PC game though? Please, we all know that The Witcher 2, takes a massive [censored] on every other PC game this year. To be honest I don't think I can decide whether I like TW2 or Skyrim better.

It's not an especially large % of the votes (less then 30%).

I kinda dislike video games that took a bunch of years of badly done work to not function properly on the PS3.

*Starts game*

160 hours of gameplay later

No game. And I mean NO game ever comes close to providing as much content in such an immersible environment as skyrim.
Considering just the absolute VAST amount of content provided its no surprise that there are glitches and bugs that haven't been fixed. How the hell do you expect game developers to find all of them considering just how much content there is in the game? There are games out there with less than 20 hours of ingame content that have bugs and you expect a game that has more than 10 TIMES that much content not to have some? Learn to work around them. People complain about bugs and glitches.. Personally if you are the type to care so much you honestly should try getting it for PC if not for the mods then at least for console commands.

To be honest though considering the overall average bug per large period of time of gameplay skyrim really isn't that bad. People just seem to feel its inflated just because of just how many hours they are putting into a single game. I had more bug issues from games like Assassin's Creed (effing screen tearing) and Dead Island and they don't NEARLY have as much content.

No, since there were better games this year.

Actually there weren't any better games this year. BF3, SS, UC3, and for some reason that Batman game were the only contenders, and they didn't even come close.

Yes. Glitches a side yes it is and even with the glitches it is GOTY. Remember how good Fallout 3 and Oblivion got when most of it's glitches were patched??? The best gaming experiences that I can think of, unless you think MW3 or BF3 should have won??? Batman shouldn't have won because it is easily played by bashing the buttons...

It's subjective. If that other member said there were better games, then there were better games. You can't actually replace opinions with other opinions as if they were facts.

100 hours in and I haven't had any major problems. The game runs smooth thus far (knock on wood). You can't compare the problems of a few and say everyone is having problems OP. The game is not only the game of the year it is my game of the last 5 years!

I think glitches and minor bugs can be overlooked, but a serious technical issue that prohibits enjoying the game at it's full potential, as with many PS3 gamers, has to be taken into account. No game was anywhere near as ambitious, but for a game to be considered it needs to have some sort of consistency. Being able to reliably enjoy all the hard work and detail comes first.

It is comparative, i think to when the iPhone 4 first came out with those antenna complaints, yes, we know the phone is awesome, but it is a phone. It needs to make calls properly.

Yes, i've had barely any problems in my runthrough and any bad runthrough I ran across, the internet had a quick fix to it already put out there. The only problem I had was that Bethesda never added a divorce option, which isn't that big of a deal but kind of annoying.

Opinions are not facts, but collective opinions are a close approximation.

A single opinion is worthless, but collective opinions can be used as a good yardstick when measuring the overall worth of a videogame.

well lets see people are complaining that there PS3/Xbox360,PC are or will have malfunctions that will force a reboot or a new hard drive depending on the system that is being used

Not sure what this means....you are a hater because people are complaining they have a PS3/Xbox360/PC?
And as far as the latter half of your post, while there is a percentage of people that are having issues, not 1 post have I seen where someone has been 'forced' a new hard drive. Not 1.
As indicated by the number of registered users posting this very poll, which is representative of less than 10% of actual sales of the game, of those bothering to vote, 3/4 or so say yes to GOTY.
It appears your complaint is not factual.
I was one of the small percentage of people who had some issues early on. It was merely a matter of proper set up, as it was for virtually everyone here at work that is playing the game(well except for 1 guy who just doesn't have enough of a computer).

Easily, best game I have gotten this year, IMO. I do prefer the PC version to the PS3 version, though.
