Skyrim won Game of the Year question is does it deserve it?

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 3:33 pm

Absolutely deserves it. Despite the bugs I've put over 110 hours into this game and I'm STILL feeling like I'm just scratching the surface. Still need to start the Companions, Thieves Guild, and Dark Brotherhood, and I've only just begun the Imperial Questline. I'll start a second character for the Stormcloak questline and entirely new play experience with different perk setups.

I can't say that about any other nominee for GOTY. I love exploring in games, so when a developer goes as far as to create an entire country for their players to experience... wow. I'm amazed it works as well it does - Oblivion and Fallout 3 were just as problematic (if not more) at launch, and don't even get me started on New Vegas (Obsidian, I know). Skyrim is a tour de force of Nordic culture, breathtaking visuals, and immersive gameplay. Why doesn't it deserve GOTY?

It's a sad day.

I love killing guards in a siege, who ALL have the same face.

I love seeing random thieves dead in a town, who ALL have the same face.

I love so many bugs that it would literally take me hour(s) to type them out.

I love scripted and over-sighted dragon deaths.

I love the fact that anything/everything is over-looked because it is riding on former glory.

I love the fact that from this release on, it's console or bust.

I love the fact that the PS3 release seemed to have not had a hitch in the side of this at all.

Portal 2 was the best game this year for myself.

THE BEST BEAST! By far one of the best I have ever played. Perfect on every single aspect. Blew my mind! Crazy good. Best twists. Best ending. Best characters, best song. Or shall I say I simply say AGREED.

Hey Obsidian, when's your GotY? Oh right, Fallout New Vegas isn't fixed yet. Sorry to hear about Alpha Protocol and Dungeon Seige 3.

the only game that is remotly close on several aspects, such as complexity, detail, immersion and mechanics is Battlefield 3, and since I never had long term first hand experience I voted for Skyrim.
am only planning on buying BF3 for myself for xmas so then I'll see if BF3 was more worthy for sure, especially considering that despite me and all my friends on the PC never had any tech issues with Skyrim, the amount of issues on consoles is indeed very negative.

Yes. In my mind, the only game that was a real GOTY competitor for Skyrim was Deus Ex : Human Revolution. It actually beats Skyrim all to pieces for story writing and play mechanics outside of boss battles but falls short in raw scope of play and was perhaps a month too early to get that last word in for the voters to glow over like some movie releases for the grammys. It would have won most other years.

story writing/dialogues... yes definetely, but game mechanics? sorry not even close... deux ex is a very good game, and is very cool, but much poorer mechanics and depth wise than skyrim.

Did any other game come out this year that was really good?
Cause I don't think I've bought a single 2011 game apart from Skyrim.

"Bethesda: Studio of the year"

Really? Why?

Maybe because of their good customer relations and excellent PR?

Maybe because of letting their customers play alpha releases of the game and support bug-fixing in an iterative way.

I assume that next year they will win again since Skyrim will be released as a final product, correct?

Congratulations Bethesda! Keep up with the good work.

Deserved, I don't negate the award because of mere bugs, even if they are annoying.
Bethesda's games aren't your average 8 - 14 hour experience, it's a huge undertaking developing this kind of game, doing it bug-free is impossible.

Nope. It's just that Bethesda's buggy products are better than other studios' spiffy-clean products.

There was some pretty good gaming. Of the games up I quite liked Portal 2, Batman: Arkham City, Skyward Sword, Deus Ex... I liked even Skyrim more.

For me its the second best game of the year, however my favourite was an expansion pack, so I guess if we are talking full, original games then yes. I haven't really played many new releases this year though. I think all the technical issues and the dire state of this game at release and after the first 2 patches on the PC is unacceptable and that would prevent me from ever recommending this as GOTY personally, I would abstain from voting. Put those issues aside though and its great.

even tho i think this game is a piece of #### (buggy as hell, incomplete,rushed,etc..) it is the only game i bought this year so for me even tho i stopped playing it 2 weeks ago due to boredom

im hoping the Ck will re-ignite my desire to play it?

so technically it is for me the game of the year..

but i also dont consider that an achievement for them

more the fact the competition they faced is rather poor

either way this award is 1 that is handed to every1 so what does it mean really?

just means they can sell it 6 months down the track with GOTY on the cover!!

i expected more and thats probably why im dissapointed, but rest assured i wont be paying for their products anymore!

Yes, I think Skyrim deserve a GOTY. Why? Because it is so much to do, fun t play, have excellent replayability(even more than earlier games due to perks) and cool, if not a little cliche, story. The world is huge and the radiant story constantly give you small things to do while you travel, the combat system feels good(yes, it's not as good as Dark Souls, but still) and magic feels better than before, even though destruction could use a little more punch.

Portal 2 was the best game this year for myself.

Portal 2 was the best two days of this year for me, but Skyrim will be played untill the next TES and/or Fallout, thus deserving the title game of the year. (The bugs really drive me crazy though.)

People don't seem to realize there is a "war" going on between BioWare fans and Bethesda games. Just like between fans of MW3 and BF3. It's just more subtle.

Sorry but who are bioware, are they the people that made that abomination dragon age 2? can't be a "soldier" in this "war" if i don't know who i'm up against lol
