Skyrim won't install

A little late to the party, but I finally decided to go get a copy of Skyrim today. I chose to buy a physical copy because my Internet connection is crap and a download would take forever. So, I popped in the DVD, waited for the Steam installer to come up and typed in the code that was in the box. Problem is, once I get past that step all I get is this:

(This is supposed to be a screencap of the message in question, which says "This game cannot be installed". But apparently I can't post links yet)

I have Windows 8. I tried running it in compatibility mode to see if that was the problem and it didn't work. I restarted Steam, then restarted my laptop, tried to open the installer from within the DVD, and the result was all the same.

Then I tried the "Activate a product on Steam" option to see if I could at least download it as a last resort. Typed in my code and this is where it got weird: Steam recognized my code as a game called Rage and attempted to download that. I noped out of there and googled till I could google no more and nothing helpful came up. Bethesda doesn't have a phone number for customer support and I haven't received a response to the email I sent.

What gives? Any ideas?
