Skyrimesque Movies

Post » Tue Dec 07, 2010 2:53 pm

So I just watched Valhalla Rising (great movie by the way. I think I'll be naming my first Nord character in Skyrim One-Eye) and I was wondering, what are some other good movies that are Skyrimmy in nature... Movies with Vikings and such... The only one I can really think of is 13th Warrior.

Any Suggestions?

Well...How to Train your Dragon had the lanscape, architecture, and culture pretty close to what I picture as part of Skyrim's will be like. Though the plot is...not exactly something that would work for TES.

Beowolf(svcks) and Lord of the Rings, come to mind. Rohan(from lotr) takes on a very danish culture. Thats all I can think.

Not to sound like a dike but, I'm not into old movies or cartoons, Beowulf did indeed svck, and I've already seen all the LOTR movies many times.

Any other suggestions?

I suggest watching Dragonslayer. Vermithrax Pejorative is perhaps the greatest dragon to ever grace the silver screen.

Maybe The 13th Warrior... You should really read the book it's based on Eaters of the Dead, by Michael Crichton.

I haven't seen it yet. But if I was to go and see a movie I THOUGHT would be Skryimesque, I'd watch "Thor". Probably not exactly what you are looking for, but I think a lot of Viking movies are fairly old.

It does....

It's based on a comic book series based on Norse mythology....

My son said it was ace, but then he's 11. Good news is , I can't comment, his uncle took him, so I didn't have to sit through another awful superhero film.
OT, noting to do with Vikings, but watch the Exorcist again, and think "that's our Esbern" when he says "the power of Christ compels you!"

Conan the Barbarian

The 13th Warrior

Braveheart (just because it is the best movie ever made)

Reign of Fire (it svcked, but it had lots of dragons)

All I can think of off the top of my head while stuffing my face with pizza.

EDIT: I enjoyed Thor for what it was. The mood was very light-hearted.

Yep, loved the way Dragonslayer portrayed Magic as well, even though it was a Disney movie. Back when they made semi decent live action movies at least.

Just watch all the fantasy stuff. You need some Willow.

That was probably the only movie with Val Kilmer that I didn't feel like kicking him in the nads for being a [censored]. :P

Not a movie but I've been watching the new series Game of Thrones. It's very Skyrimesque considering all of the sword fighting, blood, gore, violence, snow, and a little intimacy of course!

They don't show Game of Thrones on tv where I live. I've read the books and would love to see the series.

Unfortunately I can't think of a recent movie on Viking/Vendel/Late Iron Age that didn't make me sigh. The lack of quality is disturbing, even if the intent isn't to do a serious job on portraying it correctly and to be clear, I don't want to judge movies by this criterium. Beowulf & Grendel (the version with Gerald Butler) came close to not leaving me with disgust. Unless I'm seriously forgetting some title. I'd prefer an oldie to "Thor" or "Valhalla Rising" or such any time.

Valhalla Rising had some good stuff. There's also that 1958 movie The Vikings, which was sorta hit or miss.

Just decided to overcome my own scepticism and clicked on the links. First thing that catched my eye was the still on the the utter right of "Game of Thrones" and I immediately thought something like: hmm, looks promising. xD
