Skyrims Magic System

Post » Tue Nov 29, 2011 5:45 am

So after a lot of debate when Skyrim was announced and after Beth announced that Spellmaking was OUT, and now that we've seen it first hand in game, albeit we don't know all of the spells yet, what is your position on spellmaking now?

Personally, I was furious when I learned that spellmaking was removed. I was literally mad irl. I was foaming, bro. But I then got over it. Having USED the spells at PAX myself, albeit only for a couple of minutes, I only got to use 2 spells, I think I'm going to LOVE this.

Now, we've read (from the new 3 hour demo reviews) that there is essentially Sith Lightning, which honestly is just amazing. You hold down the trigger for a huge bolt of electricity shooting out of your hands, straight up melting faces daily. This is good. THis is very, very good. I don't care if that's the only spell I have THE ENTIRE GAME.

Melting. Faces. Is. Good.

Now, couple that with Dual wielding, uh, double lightning streams shooting out of your hands melting two faces at once.

BUT WAIT. THERE'S MORE.

Couple THAT with the perk, combining spells of the same type. Two lightning face melters, combined into one Ultra-Fest Face Melter spell. This is going to be phenomenal. Just absolutely amazing. I mean, wow.

So what are your feelings on the magic system? Are you for it, or against it?

Also, what types of magic do we know about thus far?

We know there are:
Fire Runes
Frost Runes
Lightning Runes (I guess? I would assume.)
Fireball
Fire stream
Ice..stream..(?)
Sith Lightning
Overcharged Chain lightning bolts (todd used it against the draugr in the demo; bounced off the walls and enemies, equivalent of the fireball charge I'd guess)

Also, what is the equivalent of the Lightning Bolt Charge and the Fireball Charge for Frost? Surely there is one? Like.. a glacier bolt? Lol? I don't know.

I'd assume there are 4 main types of spells:
Bolts
Streams
Runes
AoE Blast (area of effect, seen in the official trailer)

And one for each spelltype, yeah?

@KFC or whatever your name is, I don't get the joke.

UNLIMITED POWER!!!

:shocking: :shocking: :shocking:

Exactly my point. The way the guy described the Spark spell just gave me this feeling of..oh..my..Lord..

He said it felt like you were wielding "true power", a feeling you never got in Oblivion or Morriwind. I cannot wait. :D

I dig it baby.

What I could use is the ability through enchantments, etc. to be able to nuke an entire city ala Vivec. Fly. Just spells that fit outside of the ordinary - feeling spontaneous and creative as magic should. Even a "gary's mod" style spellverse where you might create vines with blooming flowers, or nonsensical, non rational or goal oriented uses. Create blown glass sculptures out of thin air, make a unicycle with a donut for a wheel. I'm not asking for a lot am I;) What I mean is spells in that spirit of things.

Don't plan on using spells. But from what I've seen it looks really good.

NO I AM NOT HAPPY WITH IT!. I hate it, despite having never used it for any length of time.

Frost/Ice spells are cool.

I like it, but I feel that BGS only went halfway with it--they should have allowed (where reasonable) spell combinations. But still, an improvement over Oblivion's system.

I love the way magic is looking now, in fact on of my concerns is it will be too fun to give up.

If magic is too fun, I'll never play stealth or melee because it just can't compare in fun and power.

This is what happened to Dragon Age: Origins, I played a mage first and I've always had trouble playing stealth and melee.

Also, I'm probably going to shout "UNLIMITED POWER!" the first time I Sith Lightning somone.

I'll take the ability to have spells centered on the caster, spells having power behind them, dual casting, duration casting, perks, and useful base spells over spellmaking and exploiting said system with no useful base spells outside of getting the spell effect for said spellcrafting.

I never really been appealed to the magic that much in previous TES games, but the magic in Skyrim looks kickass and I can't wait to try it out.

Well, by the looks of it they seem to have really nailed Destruction magic at least, however, I really hope the other magic schools have received an equal amount of love as well. It hasn't really been mentioned, but stuff like telekinesis being usable offensively, using illusion spells in dialogue to manipulate people and just in general feeling like there's lots of magic to be used that isn't offensive but more mysterious and cool would be awesome. I still have high hopes though ^^

Yes, it is a continuous stream. Confirmed by three different 3 hour demo reviews.

I like the magic system from what I have seen so far. I have no favorite spell because I don't remember the few they used in the E3 demo.
