slated games that you actually like.

Post » Thu Aug 27, 2015 9:09 pm

have just downloaded forza horizon 2 for 360.

from all the reviews of it i have watched/read the game is slated by most people (comparing it to the xbox one version).

i am very much enjoying the game though (i love the original forza horizon) and certainly don't think it is anywhere as bad as has been written about.

nice graphics, cool map of europe, and cars lots of cars (including the mclaren p1,the reason i got the game i have to say).

definitely not deserving the slating it has got imho.

Far Cry 2 for one. Also BIA hells highway. Far cry 2 did get a bit repetitive, but I preferred it in loads of ways to the sequels. Africa as a setting was awesome. Doing it again but adding in more wildlife would be cool. The graphics also felt more real in a way.

Hells Highway I thought the gunplay was good and enjoyed the story. I didn't feel it was terrible compared to the previous games. It is also one of the last good fps WW2 games to come out. 2008 at the same time as waw.

I feel some settings have just been overlooked in recent years. If they were done again they could be amazing. IE a new Far Cry in Africa or a new WW2 fps.

I second Far Cry 2. I also know a lot of people didn't care for the newest Aliens vs. Predator game, which I personally enjoyed.

Yeah, that AvP wasn't too bad. It was fun hunting humans as the Alien  ...I don't think i played it long enough to get to the Predator part. Needs fixing :hehe:

Dragon Age 2, it has the best voiced player character ever (when playing sarcastic female character ).

This post sums up some good ones. Far Cry 2 was my personal favorite in the series and the closest one I got to finishing (as I've never finished any of the Far Cry games) and BIA is my favorite WWII game series, and a very underrated one at that.

Yeah, DA2 wasn't nearly as bad as it's reviews. Was it flawed? Absolutely. Was it terrible? Nah.

Two worlds it was a lot of fun and the weapons upgrading system was engaging all you have to do is find the same weapon that you want upgraded and just combine them. its so simple. My only real gripe with the game is the atrocious framerate.

I really enjoyed Dragon Age despite all the hate, enjoyed the story and Sarcastic Hawke made me laugh several times.

Hmm, Two Worlds as well, one and two were cheesy enough that I enjoyed playing them. Same for the Fable series, it's pretty dumb fun to play with.

Star Wars: The Old Republic gets criticized pretty heavily by some folks, but I'm enjoying it.

Dynasty Warriors...haven't bought one since Empires 5 but I'm considering getting Empires 8 soon as there's just enough fluff for Empires with all the typical hack and slash of the series to be entertaining,

I don't know why people list Far Cry 2, it received 8/10 ratings from several places.

Definitely Far Cry 2 for me too. For years it was the cool thing to hate. It's very gratifying to see that more people are remembering (or at least speaking out about) the game's strengths these days.

More recently, I really liked SimCity. Sure the cities were miniscule and the online stuff was unwanted, but I had a lot of fun with it.

I enjoyed Way of the Samurai 3 quite a lot, and yet the http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-3/way-of-the-samurai-3.

I was surprised when WotS4 was relesaed for PC earlier this year, but it's unfortunate that WotS3 isn't as it's better IMO.

Not sure how well it was received but Divinity 2: Dragon knight saga was an awesome game to me. I never see people talking about it so I assume it wasn't received well.

I also remember the riot people were in over the new DMC: Devil may cry, but I actually liked it for, ya'know, the game play.

Way of the Samurai got worse with each installment....I loved 1, 2 was meh, 3 was so bad that I actually returned it to the store after an hour of giving it a chance and I won't even bother with 4. I don't know how they can consistently ruin such a simple combat system that worked well, they added insta-kills and other stuff that messed up everything. It's funny as a similar thing happened to Tenchu which is sad as both games had so much potential.

Far Cry 2 was a beautiful game and quite an awesome map maker. Some of the mechanics did get on my nerves though.

I really enjoyed Ryse: Son of Rome. I thought it literally played like an interactive movie, which in my opinion has never been done properly. Another game that got completely murdered was the new Thief game. I actually enjoyed it! I liked all the details and the overall style.

Kingdoms of Amalur surprised me as actually being pretty good, despite it being notorious as a failure.
It does have problems, but I think the good stuff outweighs the bad. It would have been interesting to see an improved sequel.

I agree, it's a great game... But haters gonna hate.
(it also was broken on launch, so that didn't help)

I like Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. Granted, i only played it years after the fandom addressed its many problems, but still.

I thought Deus Ex: Invisible War was okay. It wasn't as good as the first game (or the third one). Nor was it particularly memorable, and the obvious consolization of its annoyingly small levels and interface was irritating. BUT...I don't consider it to be the awful mess that completely ruined the franchise either.

I wasn't a fan of it myself (granted, I only played the demo, and it left me unimpressed), but it got good scores and sold about million copies in its first three months. In normal situations, that'd be a really good start. KoA is "only" a failure because of the asinine things the company behind it pulled, not because of anything the game itself did wrong.

Dragon Age 2 got alot of criticism, but I actually really enjoyed it and liked it better than Origins (Origins just felt like a knock-off of the later half of Act 2 and Act 3 of Neverwinter Nights 2 in my opinion.. you rename the Archdemon the King of Shadows and its nearly the same story).. and fyi, Sarcastic female Hawke is best Hawke..

I suppose the Hyperdimension Neptunia games receive a fair bit of Criticism, but the gameplay mechanics are usually extremely solid and the characters light hearted interactions with each other can actually really cheer you up and make you laugh after a hard day (than again, I have always been a fan of moe stuff)

Assassins Creed 3:

this title in particular gets A Lot of hate, but I really enjoyed it.. while I may not have liked the setting (granted im canadian, and honestly i doubt very many people outside the states would have cared for an american revolution Setting, which is maybe why it gets so much hate), but as far as a game goes i thought it was pretty solid.. we had some great new variety in Gear, both the Bow and Rope Darts were very fun and so were muskets (a spear and firearm in one), it added stalking zones which were very helpful in "cant be detected" missions, Connor was actually not a terrible character and was a nice change of pace after 3 games of just Ezio, it had the best Desmond Segments in the series, and the new ways to interact with the environment were really fun (being able to jump from tree to tree in the countryside, when being chased being able to jump through a window and jump out another on the houses far side was a great way to escape guards), and the Naval battles were sort of fun as well..

and this one may be a stretch, but i guess maybe Might & Magic 8: Day of the Destroyer would fit the category, considering it gets poorer reviews and usually quite a bit lower ratings than other entries in the franchises

when talking to Might & Magic fans, many will say this one is their least favorite, and it often gets some very poor reviews compared to some others of the franchises entries.. but in all honesty, it was my favorite. alot of people were bothered by the "you don't create your whole team at the beginning, but make your MC and recruit other people along your journey" mechanic, but I loved it as it allowed me to alter my team composition as my needs evolved (and recruiting Dragons was fun.. even if they were overpowered).. the plot wasn't that bad as a follow up to the previous events in the franchise (after the Kreegan invasion, one of the Anicents constructs arrives to destroy the world in an attempt to purge the Kreegans that had already been (mostly) repelled and we had to stop him), and it was great to see King Roland make a cameo..
granted, M&M8 still had several issues which bothered me.. the capital of the Regnan empire was completely unimpressive, and the plot about defeating Escaton was sorta pointless considering the Reckoning 3 years later ended up destroying all of Enroth anyways..
still though, I think this game while not a masterpiece, is still far better than what alot of reviewers and critics gave it credit for at the time of release..

I thought the notoriety was mostly down to the parent company's rather wobbly business plan rather than the game itself: it seems to have been generally well-enough received, but sadly never hit the big time. Pity, I liked it.

And as others have mentioned, DA2, whose main sin was being released half-finished, and Two Worlds: once you get past the dodgy voice-acting and cut-scenes that don't fit, it's a really enjoyable game with some quite inventive features.

Edit: oh, and DKS: I think it (or Ego Draconis or Divinity II or whatever it was called on any given week) also suffered a bit from just not really managing to find a place in the spotlight for whatever reason. I did hear a few complaints along the lines of "but it's not Divine Divinity!" but you get that all the time. I'm glad Larian are still doing the Divinity series, and D:OS2's backing seems about due to start any time now.

...and for not being DA:O, whose "big" fans treated as the second coming of Baldur's Gate.

Hmm, I'll have to toss Two Worlds onto my Steam backlog (HA!) next sale.

Ah, I forgot about Kingdoms, it's one of my favorite games, speaking of, I think it's time for another playthrough soon, might go warrior this time around.

Also what game isn't broken on launch these days? :P

You'll enjoy it, it's very...Cheesy. :P

Makes sense, because the game is pretty solid.

I have the opposite problem posed by this topic: I often tend to dislike games that other most people can't stop praising. But I guess that would be a topic for another thread.

This game may not count, but If I had to pick one I suppose I would pick Skyrim. It gets relentless hate and criticism on this board, no matter what forum I go into (if this board had a forum devoted to Teddy Bears people would criticize Skyrim in it). But I can't help it, I love it.

I wouldn't call Vampire the Masquerade a "slated" game. On the contrary I'd say it's one of the most highly-regarded RPGs to come out in the last 15 years.
