Slavery

The way slavery is depicted in TES is a complete joke. Not in the least bit believable

wut do u mean dude...there has been slavery like that before. in that same way. they were not always targeting race sometimes they wuld just capture people andput them on the market. the romans had slavery like this. prisoners. prisonersof war. poor people. people someone in a powerful position did not like.

I suppose it's possible but I doubt it would take the same form as the slavery in Morrowind. In fact it very well could be the Argonians enslaving the Dunmer. If that were the case it wouldn't extend into the land of Skyrim. You might hear people talking about it though.

no, don't think there will be slavery. probably wergeld (correct spelling??) as in blood/life debt. a sort of indentured servitude. but no outright slavery.

I don't think it was the empire that was stopping slaves, there was no law passed that prevented it, it was just frowned upon

No, the empire did ban slavery, save for Morrowind which was part of the truce drawn up by Vivec and Tiber.

Any who, I doubt it'll be there. Out of all the races, it's pretty much the mer who tend to be slavers, humans prefer to either kill or incorporate their enemies.

I don't really think that this will be any where near as common place as it was in morrowind. If there is slavery I would assume it is the good ole sanctioned volunteer kind like many people don't know about because half the time it's abused. Also even if it were to be allowed in places I think it would be the veritable New Vegas of skyrim where it is. Our Vegas is the only one with legal prostitution how far do you think they would go? Everyone would refer to it as That city. . . lol

If we are to draw paraleles to Scandinavia, the vikings used slaves, called tr?lar. They were either captured on raids, or willingly offered to become slaves, if they could not take care of themselfs. In more modern times, the nations of Scandinavia were among the first to ban slavery, during the time when the slavetrade was very extensive. So it′s a real barinteaser.

No, slavery has never been part of the Nord way of life.

There might be servants or field workers....but not slaves.

My Dunmer believes in Dunmer tradition and he believes in slaves and he hates the oppression of the empire and those vile Imperials.

I also believe in my family's honorable tradition of beheading all the slavers they can see, and we also hate the oppression of anybody who doesn't agree with us.

I think we'll get along well :D (/beheads dunmer slaver).

Thralls were present. For lack of better words I guess it's described as a sort of slavery but a thrall could always buy his freedom and wasn't really considered property.

EDIT: Oh wait, you were talking about game lore, weren't you?

I know that. Slavery is not always based off skin color. Thats obvious. What I mean is when I saw a slave in Morrowind, nothing about his situation or the temperament of his master indicated he was a slave... not believable.

In order to be a docile slave like they were in Morrowind, that would require a lot of abuse from the master. Where were the whips etc? Slavery cannot exist without physical abuse.

Slavery and that it would be commonly accepted don't have to match. Beth put slaves in Fo3 so they know how to do it. I'm hoping there are slavers and slaves of all races, not just Dunmers slaving khajiits and argonians.

It'd also be an interesting twist (and moral dilemma) that the beast races enslaved Dunmer, in revenge for all those years of kidnapping and forces slavery they've suffered.

Still, if that would happen, it'd happen in Mainland Morrowind, not in Skyrim...so it's unlikely we see slavery, unless maybe in some puntual sidequests.

I think outlaws should be working, but I don't know if that's called slavery. Either way, it would be cool to see a scabby Kajiit mining or chopping wood :)

Destroyed, utterly.

If there are any Dres nobles left, they were running for their lives from their previous slaves and their Argonian liberators/rebels. They wouldn't have had time to take their slaves with them, and would likely have had a very difficult time keeping control of them with all that going on.

The most likely Dunmer nobles to survive would have first been Hlaalu, already abiding by the Empires laws and accepting outsiders, next Telvanni(if anyone figures a way out to live through that mess, they would have) and finally Redoran, who probably would have been the most likely to have territory close to Solstheim. Dres and Indoril on the other hand, being the smallest and/or the Weakest, dependent on their position in society(Indoril's control of the Temple) and location(Dres's control of the agriculture), the ones that abused the beasts the most and closest to them, means that this disaster would have left them in utter shambles if they even survived at all. The few that might have, are those that have managed to accept the changes and adapt to their new situation.

The Dunmer cannot afford to keep slaves anymore, they have enough trouble just trying to survive right now.

Makes the most sense indeed.

I'd like to see some amount of vague bad blood between Dunmers and the resident Khajits and Argonians, though. Any form of tension makes the game more dynamic and interesting.

Lets put it this way:

The land is in civil war

Bandits are rife

Dragons are attacking cities and towns

Are you saying from all of this some poor civilian won't be captured and forced to work?

Also: Slavery in TES is fantasy slavery- and nothing like real life.

That would make for a pretty awesome side quest. A former Argonian slave who has tracked his cruel old Dunmer master to Skyrim, and you can either help the Argonian find and capture the Dunmer, or help the Dunmer to escape... that's the sort of morally grey quest I'd love to see in the game.

Unless you have magical slave bracers. I would guess they do more than just prevent them running away.

Slavery is pretty much a Morrowind-Dunmer/Telvanni thing and while I guess it may be practiced in limited areas, that also implies limited demand due to a limited customer base. That doesn't preclude the existence a slavery ring at all, what slaves one can sell need to be gotten somehow. Even after slavery ended in America, people were still "Shanghaied" and Skyrim has lots of ports from which to take the unlucky.

Then you were doing it wrong, i had to buy a boat to survive the tidal wave of bottlecaps :hehe:

As i play khajiits, slavers don't tend to live that long around them. Depends on the character of course, if you have only argonian slaves, one of them won't risk her tail in saving them ^_^

Still, with my limited knowledge of the Nords, doesn't sound like something they'd do. To me it sounds like more of an elven thing (between the Dunmer and Ayleids).

Speaking of "shanghaied", with a civil war going on what are the odds that someone might send out Press Gangs to "recruit" you into their army?

Civil war. How about the sides take those who surrender as slaves?
