slight auto-aim on console versions...

Post » Fri Jan 14, 2011 10:00 pm

It would be nice to see a light magnetism when aiming at enemies, especially in ranged combat. Something like halo would be nice - it was really frustrating trying to accurately fire magic projectiles and arrows at moving targets in morrowing and obliv, and it made the non-melee combat quite awkward and haphazard.
Also this way it might stop the massive cluster[censored]s that inevitably happen when more than two npcs come into the fray.

I personally do not want to see this feature in Skyrim, it would take the skill out of the marksmanship skill and would only turn TES into more of a shooter than it already is.

How about a slight learn to aim for console players?

How would a feature that lowers the requirement of player skill make it more of a shooter?

Especially considering most serious shooter players turn OFF auto aim...

I'd say no to auto aim, but maybe a circle or some other way to show what the spread of where your attack could go. It's hard to hit stuff from a distance, probably even more so now that the ai could be smarter ... but an autoaim would take some of the raw skill it takes to be an archer. I dont know either way to be completely honest, but there should be something I feel. Just maybe not an auto aim.

I don't really care since I won't play it on a console, but I voted no out of spite for auto-aim in general

I think there will certainly be something of the sort, probably for all versions. Being an RPG, physical skill of the player is not the focus, but rather the skill of the players character.

most console shooters have in built sticky/magnetic aim even if you turn off the auto-aim. Thumbstick just isn't the best for shooting.

I've played plenty of shooters on the PC with a gamepad.

That's total bull.

Regardless, make it an option that can be toggled in the menus, like most shooters.

That last statement has never actually applied to this series. The TES games have always focused on both, at least in part.

That said, I'd be a little surprised if the game has auto-aim, to be perfectly honest. Projectiles in TES don't move as fast as bullets and auto-aim makes leading shots extremely difficult.

Because this feature has never been in TES games, but constantly appears in shooters. Adding a feature like this would only add more actiony features to the game and detract from the RPG experience I love.

NO.

I play on Xbox 360, and I want to show off my epic marksman skillageness without Stupid [censored] aim assist.

I dont think we will be leading shots in this game. I bet they simplify the "shooting" mechanic and that they do indeed implement auto-aim. Character skill should definitely play a part in how easy it is to hit a target.

No it wouldn't. I'm talking about a very slight autoaim - just to smooth out ranged combat, which as it stands, on consoles (when the target is moving), feels unnatural.
And a blanket statement in which you say that it 'would only 'turn' it into 'more' of a shooter', is not helpful really. It's already an action-rpg, might as well make sure the action is actually good, aye?

It would be pretty hard to add an auto aim feature now that I really think about it. Arrows and balls of fire aren't going to be instantanious, so even if you locked on at one point the enemy could easily move and you'd miss anyway. Maybe there could be a perk that could show a transparent line/cone that would give you a basic idea of where you're attacks are going to go, and then the rest would be left to the player timing the shot.

I would like to see some homing magic spells, but that's something else entirely.

I see no problem with an aim-assist option. I don't play TES on consoles anymore, but I know from experience that it is definitely more difficult to aim with a gamepad than a mouse. If you don't want it, don't turn it on.

Now what would be interesting is for the option to have a "home in" effect on some magic effects. The only thing is it would have to be custom spells only and cost a ton.

Auto-aim ruins the fun and also makes it where it takes no effort which is a downside when it comes to games. Slight magnetism isn't even really acceptable to me, I can snipe just as well on the console as I can on the pc. PC is just better in the long run because my Razer Naga is sweet, otherwise if I was using any other mouse with anything less than 5600 dpi I would rather use a 360 controller.

Yeah, it's been in a lot of shooters. Also a lot of action games in general. Also lots of non-action games, like action RPGs. Hell, even more classic RPGs arguably offer "auto-aim" as the only kind of aim involved - the games always aim for you. Auto-aim really isn't a shooter-specific feature in any sense.

And as for it adding more actiony features to the game... again, I have to ask how that's the case. It's lowering the reliance on player skill and reflex/twitch skills, which is going to inherently increase the importance of the character's skills in determining combat results. How is that detracting from what you apparently consider the RPG experience?

I dont think we will be leading shots in this game. I bet they simplify the "shooting" mechanic and that they do indeed implement auto-aim. Character skill should definitely play a part in how easy it is to hit a target.

Simplify how? Simplify back to the way it was in Morrowind? That still wouldn't be conducive to auto-aim. Simplify so that arrows move exactly like bullets? That... wouldn't make sense. You need to be more specific here.

Don't mind it if I can disable it. :P And I'm an awfully lousy aim ; but there's too much fun in trying.

... So glad they implemented the picking up of arrows, though.

I hope they make spells and arrows simply travel faster. They were kinda slow in Oblivion. This might help solve the issue.

Altho I played on pc..Sure I could always hit things as I played w/ mouse...but they were just so boring and slow.
