Slightly more Realistic shields

Post » Thu Feb 20, 2014 2:56 pm

This game is great. there is a lot to like. but, the shields are so small! I had a shield and it wasn't even a shield, it was the size of a buckler. now I am not asking for arena/daggerfall/real life full body coverage shields. but the shields are not even the size of the ones from Skyrim. my characters hand is half the size of a round "shield". so what I ask is that we make the shields a bit larger, so they are Skyrim size(at the least).

Apparently it's just the low level shields that get dinnerplated, the crafting video released today showed a pretty nice Khajiit shield and apparently he was level 20, so there's hope.

they have those big o'l dang o'l shields u want later on, i play shield sword so i know wut u mean. There are really cool looking ones at low level that are more rectangular and maybe buckler and a half size, i kept a lvl 5 shield up to lvl 11 with crafting junk because it was rly cool and unique - never saw anyone else with it

oh, thats good news. I guess I will have to stick with buckler size for a few levels though, but I would rather have regular sized higher level shields than no shields at all I guess.

I'm the opposite. I am glad we have the option of smaller shields. My favorite shield is actually the buckler, which is only 6 to 18 inches in diameter. Bigger is not always better!

Traditionally larger shields were for deflecting missle weaponry, but smaller and lighter shields were optimal for melee combat.

The buckler was more widely used than is commonly known. It was a simple yet effective weapon, often combined with a short sword, falchion, or rapier. It was popular circa 1100 to 1600. The buckler had a variety of roles when it came to swordplay, but five principal means come to the fore as described in MS I.33. Each use recognizes the shield's small size and maneuverability when dealing with light blades.

Hand protection: The primary use of the buckler was to protect the sword hand.

Deflector: The buckler's lightness and curved center made it excellent for deflecting attacking blades.

Blinder: The light blades used in conjunction with the buckler depended on rapid movements, which meant that a single second was an important advantage. The wielder of the buckler could use the buckler to shield his sword-hand's position from view, keeping his opponent from guessing his next strike.

"Metal fist": A buckler could be used to directly attack an opponent by punching with either its flat face or its rim.

Binder: The buckler could be used to bind an opponent's sword hand and weapon as well as their buckler against their body. The buckler was also very useful in grappling, where it allowed an opponent's arms to be easily wrapped up and controlled.

Yes but now you have your realistic RP excuse as to why I am poking you to pieces in alliance combat!

Well we are fighting in fantasy land where my character is so powerful, that size of shield makes no difference. Quiet now puny shield bearer!

I am with Jnaathra on this.

I am so tired of it being the usual "Bucklers = crappy low level items" and giant shields = the best high level items.

In a melee fight I'd take a buckler over a shield any day of the week, they were a lot better to use with a one handed weapon then a larger shield was and ther'es a reason many of the surviving historical combat manuals have a section for "Sword and buckler" fighting.

They were lighter, not strapped to your arm (so you couldn't be pulled to the ground/tripped by them, like shields could lead to) and served a multiude of different uses for both defense and offense.

It wasn't uncommon for the boss area of the bucklers (the round part in the middle) to have various attachments, a spike protruding from it, a latch for "grabbing" the enemies weapons/catching things, a sharpened edge for slicing into your enemy, etc.

Bucklers hardly ever get fair treatment in games or movies.

I think it'd be nice if they had both small/larger shields with

I am perfectly fine with bucklers and would love for the option to be there because options.although I am more of a fan of roman tower shields and germanic(I think) shield(The ones for deflecting missiles).
