I have poured over $800 in computer parts for the sole purpose of playing Oblivion at Medium-High settings. 214 gameplay hours later I encounter the bug. It's amazing how programmers working on a payroll of $0.00/hr can fix a problem that Bethesda devs working for 35k+ salaries cannot.

I'm sorry, it's not amazing. It's pathetic.

Well, the problem really isn't fixed, just reset.
Chances are you will get hit again with it. It is a sad truth that Beth can not fix it, but we can't either. :(

I know it's only a temp fix. Dirty or not it is a fully functional workaround.

User made unethical fixes and stuff seem to always yield good results. Timeslip's Morrowind exe optimizer was astonishing in it's own right for making Morrowind use SSE to speed up performance and fix lots of CTD situations. To top it off it also works on other applications.

3rd party open source programs make the world go round.

Please solve the problem. Your game and its display of myths has lasting value, and it's ideal for people who have a lot of time on their hands. That's a group that's only going to increase over the next few years. Given the sort of immersion that can occur, it is heartbreaking not to be able to finish it.

That's not what I was told, and I don't how one could know such a thing. Individuals come in all sorts, and a development team is made up of individuals. If it were I, I'd take the program home and solve the problem. It's an interesting puzzle, and it's sure as nails nobody, anywhere, wants it to ever occur again.

Beyond that, it doesn't hurt to plea with an individual. If the individual doesn't exist, it still doesn't hurt. So, I'm making a bet you're wrong. I can win a lot; I get to play the game as it was designed to be played; and I can't lose anything.

Right. If it were you. But it's not you. It's someone who finished Oblivion 2 years ago, and someone who finished all of the expansions for Oblivion a year ago. They've moved on to Fallout, patch support for Oblivion is dead. If you really want we can make a bet, but know that it will NEVER be fixed.

I'm a PS3 Oblivion player. 5 times I played, 4 of my characters got this bug mentioned, usu between 300-306 days in the game. Remaining 1 is actually a earlier saved game that I continued and so far it reached the 306 days mark and still okay. But I've stopped playing. Ever since twice hit with the bug, I've not enjoyed playing Oblivion. It became a stressful ordeal when you know your character is carrying a ticking bomb. However I wonder if this bug is a guarantee phenomenon?

It is unfortunately. You will eventually hit it the longer you play. On PC, some people may get luck and not hit it at the 200-250 hour mark, but MUCH later...it will happen though. So X360 and PS3 users pretty much have to do everything in the game before that common hour/day comes, which svcks.

1. Even if an individual were to make a fix, it would have to go through Bethesdas QA testing and Microsoft/Sony testing/distribution.

2. It sounds like the glitch is a part of software licensed by Bethesda. Their license may not permit them to modify that software to fix the bug.

Well seeing as it was the exact problem as in Morrowind and they didn't fix it for Oblivion, unless they just didn't notice it in Morrowind and implement a new system in TESV, it won't be fixed.

I don't recall this happening in Morrowind...the autosave/quicksave corrupting games was one thing that carried on to Oblivion though.

Just so it goes into the pile (Tig: perhaps it can go into the first post) the A-Bomb can be a complete gamebreaker for an unexpected reason. So far have seen two instances where if it's hit it causes a crash to desktop when the player goes to Sheogorath's palace grounds and nowhere else. So for someone on console trying to complete the SI main quest, it's game over.

I do have at least one sent save, possibly two kicking around in pre-fix state. CTD going to Palace, Bash or OAF them and it's fine after that.

Thanks for the info on the workaround. It worked for me. I had already had the problem and I had to go back to a previous save and lose 30 hours. I had just caught up again and it started happening again.

I have a hard time understanding why Beth did not issued any fix for the consoles versions after all this time...If I were playing the game on console I would not be happy at all...Sure, the pc version fix can be considered as "dirty" and not a "state of the art" fix but it works just fine (I have been using it several times on my games, even voluntarily provoking the issue for testing purposes, and the fix works without causing any other problems) and it is much better than having to start a whole new game in order to be able to finish a questline. Unless you look at how its actually done, the end user wouldn't see a difference and the game would run nicely...

Okay, I have a tough one for you geniuses out there to fix. lolz

I'm having a huge framerate drop when I cast magic (e.g. fire), and I just purchased Oblivion a couple days ago. I actually had to reinstall it earlier today, so hours of gameplay is not the issue for me. I normally run about mid 30s when outdoors, but when I cast magic, I get regularly get a 15 FPS drop (down to about 20, obviously). Also, just like the studies have shown, the farther the flame has to travel, the less the fps drop is. but if for instance a monster is coming at me and I cast fire at it, I get the 15 fps drop. and if I shoot it at the ground, it's closer to a 20 fps drop. so....

I tried Animation Fixer. didn't work. Still got the same drops. I tried on two different save file (both of the file were preceded by OAF_ of course). So does anyone have any recommendations? btw, I haven't really had to much trouble with doors, gates, or objects unless I just haven't noticed them yet. It's mainly and possibly exclusively the casting of magic. HELP PLEASE!! :)

update right after I posted: is this the whole ABOMB bug everyone is talking about? As you can see, I recently purchased ES4, so I'm pretty much a nub.

Err no, this has nothing to do with the Abomb bug. Your problem just seems more like a performance issue with spells. You should consider this other fine mod (also provided by zBobG):
