Slow Time Shout

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 2:39 pm

There should definitely be some very noticeable effects on sound pitch and tempo, and music also fits in this category. So I voted yes.

I could see how some could argue that since the music isn't playing from an in-game stereo, there's no reason to slow it. But I can just imagine how odd it would sound if the music kept going at its normal merry pace even when everything else is slowed...

Everyone should keep in mind that Dragon Shouts are not traditional magic. It is a form of verbal debate that generates powerful effects. If BGS approaches shouts correctly, they should be completely different from magic fundamentally.

I would actually love if when the slow time shout is activated, the player is allowed to interact with the enemy more (special animations before the finishing move). It would make it more interesting than just slow moving NPCs that you can swipe at until they are dead.

Eh, why? The music is not actually in the game, you just hear it, it's not like a full orchestra is following Dovahkiin.

I think the OP means that if it affected the music as well, it would enhance the whole "time is slowing down" experience. OP, correct me if I'm wrong.

I think there should be some kind of sound when you use it- so you know when its about to end. But if you slow down the music, it just takes away from the game. I mean, your still going the same speed right? Why would the music slow down?
Besides, it just doesn't sound as cool slow :P

Kind of like dead eye mode in Red Dead Redemption?

More like hardened adrenaline from Mass Effect 2.

Nah,

I'm usually thinking too hard and trying to get so much done that I don't notice the music.

Also, I'd rather have the Steve Austin/Six Million Dollar Man sound effect ;)

Thats exactly what I meant, thank you sir.

That just depends on how you do it (the slow-down).

About the shout itself. What if it doesn't affect the world around you to make it slower, but affects you making you faster? The result as we all see it is the same, it still makes thing around you slower than you.

And the basic idea is, to experience the effect properly we need it to have some kind of sound effects; and IMO having the music slow down is a better effect than having some crappy weird matrix noises :D.

I hope it is like Turbo in New Vegas: you are moving so fast that everything around you is x amount slower. Music slowing down with your enemies would be interesting as well.

I think having special theme just for the slowdown isn't a good idea, because it would stop the current in-game music, wich wouldn't really sound right, and the shout's effect probably only lasts few seconds, so it wouldn't feel right - for me at least - to stop the proper game music just for a few second shout.

I think it just feels a bit cheaty and lame with the whole slowing time thing. I also don't like the concept in general of slowing time. Belongs in Fable games and Blockbuster movies imo...
It's kinda like with guns. They simply don't fit in TES imo. Same with slowing time

Strange. This is one of only a few things that I know about so far that I am interested in tinkering with once I get the game. My only worry is that it will be limited to some fixed magnitude/duration dragon shout and won't be available as a spell/ingredient. For a mage being able to toy with manipulating time/space would be great.

Depends on if the player slows down as well. If the pc moves at the same pace and everything else just slowed down, I wouldn't really care. If the player slows down...then I think the sound would have to slow or at least fade out.

Well, battles are meant to be aggressive and chaotic, even in slow motion, so I don't think that slowing down battle music would work.

Slowing down voices would be hilarious! Enemies taunting you in slow motion. :D

Not really fan of the slow time ability at all. If it was an option that said "No slow time dragon shout or ability at all!" I would choose that.

Yeah that's great.

But that's not what the topic is about now, is it? Way to derail the thread.

I would love it if music were to slow with the game. The sound of it suddenly getting back to full speed at the end of the effect would be a cool indicator that things are back to normal (not that people should really have trouble figuring that out anyway from the fact that things are moving at normal speed again, but what the hey it can't hurt).

That's because the music is right. If it wasn't right then you would notice it.

The shout shouldn't slow down the music unless something in the world is playing the music -- such as a minstrel or an iPod.

If you play an RPG, the whole goal of the game is to make you feel like you're your game character and feel everything he (or she) feels; so if he would feel everything around him slowing down, everything you hear from the game should also slow down to fully give you that experience.
