Small details to fill in large info media gaps.

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 2:18 am

The title says it all, but I will give an example.

In the months before Halo 3 and Halo: Reach were finished, the guys who do the updates(used to be Frank O'Connor, now Urk) would release details on small things about the game that weren't all that important. It was info non-the-less and gave fans something new to read about the game on a weekly basis.

One example of things they talked about was water physics. They explained cool systems they were using to make the water in the game look as good as possible.

Now I know not everyone here plays or likes Halo, and that's fine. This has nothing to do with those games, it is only to serve as an example of the way Bungie kept their fan's information hunger sated.

I am one who really doesn't want to know much about Skyrim before I play it, but my mind keeps wanting to know more anyway. I think small details like this would be great to let us know more about how what we'll be looking at in the game works, while at the same time not revealing anything too big that would be better saved for announcements like Bethesda is already doing.

Please consider this and thanks!

They won't release any details ATM because nothing is certain, and may be changed, and there'd be backlash if they changed it, even for the better. Listen to the Bethesda podcasts man.

I'd like that, one small bit of info or new screen per week would be nice. Little or bigger surprises (the carriage system was a big one and noone saw it coming).

^ Yea the carriage system was a nice little bomb to drop.

Heck I wouldnt mind if they just showed us snips of concept art in the coming weeks. I like the idea the OP has....even if its meaningless info or small details anything is better than nothing. Plus it gives us something to look forward to in the short term.

Bungie and Bethesda are my two favorite game developers. I always felt like if anyone is in touch with their fans its these people.

I'd be fine with this, and I actually consider it quite likely once we get a little further towards release. However, at this point, I'd be stunned if we saw anything more than a couple screenshots here and there before E3 (yes, small stuff, but not every week). I think the following is a realistic schedule of expected news and updates. Only my humble opinion of course, but I'd be shocked if information flowed any faster than this....

Between now and E3 - About 2 months to go for this. Doubtful any serious revelations will surface, but we may get a few more screenshots. Nothing on the order of every week though.
At E3 - Big update. New gameplay video and either a large reveal about new gameplay feature(s) or further clarification of existing ones.
After E3 - 5 months til release. Zip for the first month, a few more screens in the second. Perhaps a minor update to clarify something revealed at E3.
3 Months Before Release - Most of the core details of the game will flow out around this time. More frequent updates begin here, perhaps even with the weekly sniglets you're asking for in this thread
1 Month Before Release - Major previews hit the media. Full disclosure of all game features that aren't plot specific.
11-11-11 - My girlfriend's birthday, and the beginning of a very long weekend of further, torturous waiting....

We are supposed to be getting something good next week or so. I think some small things like I have suggested would be good to put up on the blog or maybe even more frequent podcasts.

I posted this in the "Skyrim Information" thread, but i'll post it here as well...

We've known for almost two weeks now that info is coming soon, but I wanted to share the following. Someone just tweeted Pete and said that they hope for at least a morsel of info to tide them over until E3 and Pete replied..."More than a morsel coming soon."

Someone else also asked what the reactions have been for the people who have seen Skyrim and Pete replied..."Guys I have talked to love it. Will get a LOT more opinions very soon." Note the added emphasis on "LOT". I'm thinking the info that is coming will be online articles from IGN and the like.

Then why have they been releasing so many details?

Well it depends on the type of detail. The carriage thing was huge, and if was removed due to some strange reason it would garner a lot of backlash. I doubt it would be removed fully though. If it is something akin to RDR where you can rid in it the whole journey and for some reason that doesn't work I have no problem with them changing it to be like the Silt Striders. I think that they learned from their mistakes and anything they have confirmed so far is either something so ingrained like a skill or it is already really well polished.

Even though we know we will be getting some new info very soon, after that how long will it be? Until E3? Possibly. So this is what some small detail updates would be for. Citing Bungie again, they have a "Weekly What's Update". This is where we would get tidbits of info on small things like grenade and water physics.

I myself would love to have some insight on how some of the new things in the engine work. Like the new flowing rapids or the falling snow and how they affect textures.

Now I know some will say, "Who cares about how the water physics work? I want to know about the big details." So far we have been hearing about big stuff every 3 weeks to over a month. So while we are waiting for the big info like "How factions are going to work this time" and such, we could be learning about other little things like, "How did you guys get that fog to look so great and what type of systems are running behind the scenes to make it work?"

E3 is June 7-9. It will be just a little over a month after we get this new info in April. That's not much of a wait.

Well by the time this new info hits this month it will be around 2 months since the trailer. So after waiting 2 months, 1 month doesn't seem as bad.

That's a good idea. Even tiny details (such as some minor place or detail in the game world) would be enough to keep me interested!

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. Small details that don't reveal anything important about the story or surprises the devs have in store.

Maybe I'm just mad, but I don't see anything wrong with releasing a little info on something a week. Maybe a drawing for a new weapon or monster or something.

They are probably getting ready to show the character system (armour, perks, spells, etc...) full blown in game footage (5 mintues of actualy gameplay) will be shown at E3 as people will want to test this game. E3 will launch a new set of articles based on the game testing from the general publec and media with a new trailer to boot

I suppose they said exactly that reffering to information about the game in general, and not reffering to anything specific?
All I did was point out an obvious fact.

Is there anyone else out there who would like some insight on how some of the behind-the-scenes systems work that are powering what we've seen so far in the screenshots and official trailer?
