Small text readable SD

Post » Sat Sep 17, 2011 10:09 pm

I am unlucky. I have no HD tv. In the world of Elder Scrolls, i love immersing myself in the world, reading everything i can... But when i watched a skyrim trailor on demand i noticed when i seen the perk tree menue the descriptions of the perks were tiny, and really hard to see... which means things like item descriptions/ stats,, ect. probably are to...
So my question is, am i going to be able to read this stuff, or is about 50% of the text in this game going to be non visible to me?
I just think to many games on the console favour HD, like deadspace, mass effect, ect..

The text will probably be much larger on a lower resolution display compared to high res display.

I empathize with you, I really do, but HD content is the future. SD content, be it TV, movies, or games is rarely made anymore. You can't even buy an SD TV set - I know, I tried a few years ago.

That said, HD TVs can be expensive, but a lot of (most) games like Mass Effect, Dead Rising, etc. assume you have one. You can always cheat like I did - I bought a 22" computer monitor with HDMI input and connected it to my 360 with an HDMI cable. Presto! Instant HD gaming for a WHOLE lot less than an HD TV. Just make the jump to HD, but do it on the cheap like I suggested. I even bought a converter box so I could hook up my old PS2 to the monitor and play PS2 games in HD. It's nice. (All you need for modern consoles is an HDMI cable - your console may have even come with one.)

Games are only going to get more and more HD from here on out. Just fore-go buying a couple of $60 games and spend the money to go HD and then you'll be set. It makes a world of difference and I can't imagine going back to SD.

I sure hope so... Its just like i remember playing mass effect 2 awhile back, and wanting to read descriptions of the races, places, ect, and it was immposible... I really hope they do make it larger on lower resolution instead of just forgetting about us SD peeps like the others...

I use to play oblivion on a sd tv and didn't know what I was missing until I got my first HDTV. HDTV's are relatively cheap these days, http://tinyurl.com/3nt5x2t is the one I have currently and is very cheap for the quality!

After Gothic 4 came out I think its been pretty clear you can't get by with SD anymore, all you guys must... absolutely MUST get HD tv's or you'll find yourself not able to even play a lot of games anymore.

I'd love to have an HD TV, unfortunately, I'm a college student and if I get a job I'll lose my financial aid for school. I understand things are just going to get worse with all this HD stuff, but some of us just don't have the means to get them. Maybe when I'm out of college and I have a job I'll be able to get all these gizmos. :glare:

Not trying to be mean to those without HD here, but I am totally against any developer going "backwards" with their games and potentially ruin it for others, your game can still be played and from my own experience you can't read things very well but it can stilll be read to a certain degree, basicaly get an HD tv if you can, the difference is just amazing and you can never go back

Indeed. I played Final Fantasy XIII with SDTV first, might as well had rubbed dirt in my eyes. I have a small 19" HDTV, cost only 130€, and that was over a year ago.

This is your best option

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236052

All you have to do is plug in your console through an HDMI cable, it's what I did when I was still not a PC gamer. It's cheaper than any TV you can find and displays in full 1920x1080 resolution.

It has built in speakers, but it also has an audio out so you could plug it into your PC and have the audio come through that. You also have the option of buying an optical headset if you are using the PS3.

If this is a little too expensive you could go smaller, but at the sacrifice of resolution.

Here is a 20" version, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236106 the only difference is the size and maximum resolution, which won't matter with this game because your console is either going to be 720p(PS3) or 600p(360)

If you decide later to start gaming on a PC, you will already have a monitor to do so. Not to mention this screen is going to have a refresh rate far superior to anything a TV will offer.

If this is the case then I am tired of developers having to develop their game for 5+ year old hardware (ps3/360) ... blah blah blah, pot ----> Kettle, and all of that. Not very nice, now is it?

Not everyone can afford an HD TV, just like some of you can't afford a $600 computer.

I have this problem with almost every game including Oblivion, Morrowind, Fallout, so yeah I think it will also be present in Skyrim.

A good half-dozen posts have been to go away.

Seriously, now - there's no reason to get into a bunch of off-topic "kids these days" talk. Not only is it very silly, but it's also off-topic, and - at best - flamebait.

Keep on topic. The fact is that not everyone can afford to have an HDTV, but can afford to buy Skyrim. So how about we continue in a civilized manner -okay?

Thanks.

Considering how large the fonts have tended to be in the previous Bethesda games I've played (OB, FO3, etc), I honestly don't think it'll be a problem. People managed (with some eye strain) to play Final Fantasy 13 on SD. (I'm one of them - it was a pain, but I managed). I doubt the text will be that small. Should be fine. :)

I hate playing oblivion on my PC (very high resolution). The font is so small it's almost annoying. O_o I once put the 480p setting on and played oblivion on my ps3 (hd-tv but low-resolution on). The font size was good on both 720p and 480p. I'm sure an SD TV will have good font size. That's pretty much the only good thing about them though

In a perfect world? Yes, of course. Not all of us can afford an HD TVs contrary to what you have, or may be able to afford. I'm a college student, I'm poor and getting financial aid keeps me from being able to get a job, and can barely afford Skyrim at this rate. Trust me, if I could afford an HD set-up I would. :tops:

Ive been looking for an affordable LED, 37", that wont cost me over $400. I also got an old TV, I cant even play games on it anymore. Dragon Age (with some patience) and Oblivion could be read, but, for example, Dragon Age 2, Divinity 2, and others, are impossible to read on an old SD TV.

An HDTV of maybe 20 to 22" wont cost you more than $200, so you should definitely consider getting one. Also, you can find deals and working refurbished models on ebay or newegg.com. You just gotta look for it.
