Post » Thu Aug 19, 2010 2:00 pm

i looked at a map of tamriel, and skyrim looks quite a bit smaller than cyrodiil. is the landscape going to be more densely populated with caves, is it going to be about the same, just smaller, or is it going to "seem" bigger in the game than the actuall map. does anybody know the anwser?

It's going to "seem" bigger in the game than the actual map

Roughly the same size, but it'll feel slightly bigger because of the mountains and other features which will slow down travelling from point a to b.

the map is about the same size as cyrodiil, however it is technically bigger because of the mountains, whereas in cyrodiil you would cross flat terrain, in this game you cant walk through the mountain, you have to walk over it, if you understand :)

because of the mountains it "feels" bigger because youre traversing up and down not across a valley

Been confirmed for months that Skyrim will roughly be the same size as Oblivion (Which was 16 square miles.)

So expect Skyrim to be around 14 square miles.

Oh, and the game maps don't actually follow lore, I think I heard somewhere that Hammerfall is supposed to be way bigger. (?)

Tamriel is supposed to be this vast continent and it's hundreds of times smaller than the state of Hawaii.

Todd said that Skyrim is just slightly smaller than Oblivion's map, but that it would SEEM larger, because the paths between locations go through a lot of winding mountain paths and trails, and you will have to walk around large landscape pieces because you can't just cross over them. So my understanding is - smaller map, but it will take longer to travel between locations, so it will seem bigger than Oblivion.

The world we see in the game is not the exact size, it's scaled. For example imperial city really isn't a small town populated by about a hundred npc's, it's a huge city which may have up to a million of people living there. iirc. Tamriel itself is supposed to be the size of Europe. So while the "real" Skyrim is supposed to be smaller than the "real" Cyrodiil, the game world in Skyrim will be about the same size of Oblivion according to Todd Howard.

Oh, and the game maps don't actually follow lore, I think I heard somewhere that Hammerfall is supposed to be way bigger.
Yeah, game world in Daggerfall, which took place in Hammerfall and High Rock was twice the size of Great Britain.

He's talking about how the actual game maps are not realistic compared to lore. Tamriel is supposed to be huge, but in game, it's not.

This is true. It's a game. Who cares if it is to scale. Enjoy it for what it is. A great fun self contained game.

Arena had all of tamriel and was literally without exaggerating 1000's of times smaller than daggerfall.

According to the back of the Arena box, it's over 8 million square kilometers, or 3,088,817 mi2

The map is smaller, mainly because Cyrodil has the long arm of that runs the length of The Niben ,including the cities of Bravil and Leyawin. Skyrim is about the size Cyrodil would be if the Niben settlements were removed.

And it's scale changes with every installment of the series.

I think they said that FONV was roughly the same size as FO3 but I felt it was much smaller IMO.

Making a game world at a 1:1 scale would really be quite the challenge.

If any of you are familiar with topography, it is actually quite a bit larger,(by quite a bit larger, i mean only by a handful or so square miles) if laid out flat, as the birds fly though, yes, it would seem smaller indeed.
